Seahawks, Falcons DE Kerney reach agreement

By John Clayton ESPN.com

KerneyAfter two days of negotiations, the Seahawks reached agreement with Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney, considered the best remaining free agent on the market.

Kerney was involved in a two-way negotiating battle with the Seahawks and Broncos. Kerney's agents, Tony Agnone and Rich Rosen, were scheduled to leave town and fly east as was Kerney, who wanted to fly back to Atlanta and think about his future. Late Monday night, he decided to take the Seahawks offer over the Falcons.

That's too bad. He'd have been a great help to Denver's D Line. They desperately need a pass rusher.

I'm indifferent as a Bronco fan. He would have helped, but he is getting old and without a strong supporting cast he doesn't do much.

By strong supporting cast, I can only assume you mean the rest of the D Line. Warren should be healthy and will hopefully return to '05 form. Wilkinson is a good fit for Bates scheme and should help as well. They do need to bring in another impact D Tackle in my opinion, and perhaps another D End, but Kerney would have been a nice start. The rest of the defense (other than safety) is pretty much top notch. Their pass rush has been utterly terrible, and in my opinion is the one thing has really kept their defense from being dominant.

As a Seahawk homer I'm not sure how to respond. I guess he's an upgrade over Bryce Fischer, but is he really worth the coin they're going to throw at him? I'm thinking I would rather lock up Dan Graham at TE and find a safety. Wistrom showed his age last year at DE on the other side. I'm hoping Daryl Tapp is ready to step in next year.

My biggest hesitation about Kerney was watching him get used (embarrassed really) by Walter Jones. Kerney had to line up all game long against him when Atlanta last met Seattle because the regular DE was hurt on that side. It was beyond bad. Yes, Jones does that to lots of guys, but it stood out more than normal that game. Just my lasting memory of Kerney.

I agree, and I think they will spend at least two first day picks on the d-line. I just don't think Kerney is worth the salary he got for having 11 sacks the past two seasons. With this draft class they can get a DE very similar and a lot younger and cheaper IMO.Hopefully with that money no longer going towards him we can get Graham end either Grant or Hamlin at FS. Then get a decent DT and call it good.

Good points.

Good signing...

For Seattle I would now like them to sign a TE. McMichael or Stevens. Graham would be okay as well. Sign Grant at FS. And maybe someone like Nick Harper to start opposite Trufant.

As a Falcon fan, I'm sorry to see Kerney leave as he is the epitomy of 'leaving it out on the field'.

But he truly was more of an effort guy than a game changer and the last two seasons have shown that he needs a compliment to really be effective. The poster who pointed out the 'Walter Jones' game was right. I remember that game vividly and while Kerney was forced to play out of position, it was a man against a boy that day.

Shefter is reporting the deal at 6 yrs for $39.5M with $19.5 in guarantees...that some big coin for Kerney and I can't say I'm not glad that the Falcons weren't the ones spending it.

Graham and Grant would be just fine by me. :goodposting:

now you're just getting greedy !!!! leave some players for the other teams! Us Titans could use all those players, so i'm hoping you don't get any of them.... ;)

I really don't get it.

The 'hawks have spent a lot of money the last few years on slightly above average DEs.

Wistrom, Fisher and now Kerney. None of these guys are elite DEs. THey are all effort guys, but for some reason Seattle keeps paying them star DE money.
