Patrick Willis (1 Viewer)

I know Willis' stat line looked decent with 7 solo and 1 assist but I reviewed the game film and had the following observations:

*KC had 39 rush attempts and on those plays Willis had 3 solo and 1 assist. They were for gains of 4, 17, 27, 2.

*KC had 16 pass completions and on those plays Willis had 4 solos for gains of 23, 17, 18, 5.

*Willis appeared to not be attacking blockers and was simply "catching" them. He was routinely thrown out of the play or was over aggressive and over pursued. It almost looked to me as if he wasn't 100%. The term making "tackles way down field" really seemed to apply here.

Does anyone know if he is banged up a little? Or can I just chalk this down as an aberration?

Apparently I'm not crazy....

From PFF:

Arguably the finest inside linebacker in football, Patrick Willis had a rare off day, scoring a -2.5 PFF rating. This was his first below-average score since Week 3 of last season. He failed to grade positively in any facet of the game, but was particularly poor in coverage, giving up 60 yards and allowing a catch on all four balls thrown his way.

Ive owned him in 2 dynasty leagues since he was a rookie. He has a stinker every now and then. It just happens. He will not score 20 every week.

I stated in the OP that his stats line looked fine with 8 total tackles but I was concerned with how he actually looked on the field. His stats were a product of the team's complete inability to stop the run, pressure Cassel, or get off the field on 3rd down. Usually Willis puts up great numbers based on his skill and athleticism and looks like one of the best, if not the best, player on the field.

He just looked like a normal guy on Sunday. Taking bad angles to the ball, getting caught up in the wash, going no where on his blitzes, falling for play fakes, etc............It is just very shocking for me to see coming from him and I thought maybe someone had some knowledge of a minor injury of some sorts.

I am leaning towards it just being an isolated awful game and am sure he will come out strong this week.

Willis was probable with thumb and knee issues before the MNF game against NO. Even though he wasn't on the Week 3 injury report, it's possible that the short week turnaround bit him a little bit last week. If he's slowed again this week, there might be more to the knee problem. That would limit his leverage and range some.

I didn't get to watch the game this week. After reading all these comments, and only 4 tackles vs the Falcons. What do we take from this now??

Ok, I wasn't worried till now, but now I am. 3 tackle day and no big plays? Is he playing hurt? I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on.

Any homers have insight?

Like I saw when I started this thread a few weeks back. Something doesn't look right to me.

Singletary: Opponents zeroing in on Willis

In most NFL cities, a linebacker with 41 tackles after five games is thought to be playing really well. When Patrick Willis has 41 tackles - tying him for 16th in the league - you wonder what is wrong.

Asked that question today, Mike Singletary said it was a little of everything. For one, nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin, who is Willis' de facto protection, is still trying to work off some rust. "Sometimes when a guy doesn't go through training camp, it shows," Singletary said.

Also, even Willis sometimes has taken poor angles to the ball carrier, as was the case in Week 3 in Kansas City and in Sunday's game against the Eagles. "In the game that we played (Sunday), there were a couple of bad reads in the game which allowed them to have a couple of good runs," Singletary said. "It had very little to do with Aubrayo."

But mostly, Singletary said, offenses have been targeting Willis in their game plans like never before. "Teams have made a decision that we have to, if we're going to run the ball, we have to get a hat on 52," he said. "I think teams are concentrating on doing whatever they can with whom they can - whether it's the fullback or the tight end or the tackle or the receiver - to that side of the ball. 'We must figure out a way to get to Patrick Willis.'"

In previous seasons, Willis has routinely been the team's leading tackler from game to game, and outings in which he's had 10 or more tackles were common. This year, Willis has led the team in tackles only twice - the first two games - and he has just one game in double digits. He had 10 tackles in the opener against Seattle. Overall, Willis leads the team in tackles. Safety Dashon Goldson is second with 32.

Willis was not available in the locker room today. Singletary likened the situation to a basketball player who is double-teamed. "That means that if Patrick -- if two or three guys are on him -- someone else should be open," he said. "And it's as simple as that." He also challenged Willis: "It's one of the things that I tell the guys all the time -- the better you get, the better you must become."

I agree that he has been targeted but he has also played below his standards as well. I am still sure, based on his track record, that he will rebound.

Week 5 from PFF:

If the 49ers have any reason to be happy, it’s another strong performance from their defense. It’s hard to highlight just one display, but we’ll go for a less-heralded member of the defense in Takeo Spikes (+2.9). While Patrick Willis (-0.4) had some problems in run defense, Spikes excelled. He not only got to the ball carrier one more time than Willis, but he had three more defensive stops than the usually exceptional Willis. There was some chatter about Spikes losing snaps, but on the back of this display, that would be foolhardy.

PFF 1st Quarter All Pro team analysis:

It feels dirty not to have Patrick Willis in here, but the tape doesn’t lie — he hasn’t had the greatest of starts to the season.

I think its a combination of issues.

First, I'm going to agree with Sing on Franklin being rusty. PW is getting swallowed by OGs like never before. Franklin must keep blockers off Willis.

Second, Willis doesn't look like himself. He doesn't seem like he's as physical with blockers at the point of attack.

When in space (like covering the TE yesterday) he seems like himself.

I called him a sell high" this offseason, so if you can still fetch a ton based on name value, I'd do it.

This is the factor that has been the most surprising. I wonder why this is.

I don't think we'll find out till after the season. One of those "PW played with a ________ shoulder for 12 weeks...blah blah blah...." stories

If teams are keying on PWilly by wasting a linemen, Singletary need to take advantage by sending a OLB or S to crash the line, and when offense swing or screen outside, PWilly will able to bust the play with his side to side speed. Singletary is terrible at play calling, and making adjustments, he won't be HC next year.

Well, Spikes and some of the supporting cast on that D has indeed had some increased stats of late.

franklin is not occupying two linemen this year. i think sing is waiting for frnaklin to round into form after missing all of preseason in his $$ holdout.
