Im 20 now and have been a fan for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories of the teams were hating Marion Butts because he was horrible. I distinctly remember watching Brisby, Bledsoe and Coates and then Martin came along. I don't know how you could call me a bandwagoner. I agree with the Boston vs. The World mentality. I root for only Boston teams. It was just expected when I was younger to root for the Celtics, Sox, Pats and Bruins... Admittedly, I am not a big hockey fan because my dad was never really into hockey so I never developed an interest. But I remember when I was like 5, I would be reading the box scores in the paper and remembering stats of the Celts, Sox and Pats.
Marion Butts (with the Pats) was the worst football player I have ever seen. It was beyond painful to watch him carry the rock because you knew exactly what was going to happen and it involved approximately two yards. You know things are bad when you're begging the Tuna to replace him with Cory Croom. Now that I think about it Butts is tied for the worst player. Duane Starks was so bad it was like he was actually playing for the other team while wearing a Pats uniform.

Ive hated the Patriots for about 30 years. The only thing worse than a Pats fan is a phony Pats fan

I started warming up to the Patriots, 1st because of Curtis Martin and Bill Parcells.... how could you not like Curtis Martin. After he left... it was really watching Brady come in the 1st game. He had something different. I don't know what it was, but it was the same thing I saw when Rothlisburger stepped onto the field. I grew up playing QB... so always been a fan of the individual first... as a Cowboys fan, I loved the 49ers because I was such a Steve Young fan.

NOW... lately, I'm being turned off the Pats. They kind of embarrass me for football.. and my favorite player is part of that franchise and I actually rooted for Indy to beat them. Go figure..

I'm 22 but remember the drafting of Bledsoe in '93 and the subsequent Parcells years strongly. I also loved Vincent Brisby and Ben Coates and am still saddened that Andy Katzenmoyer never panned out (injuries IIRC). I even remember watching the '96 Super Bowl with my immediate family in the living room.

As far as local support, it's very much true in Boston. I cheer for anything Boston (I've always been a fan of BC simply because they are in Boston) and wouldn't think twice of cheering for another team as wholeheartedly as I would any Boston team. I remember watching & taping Celtics games during the mid-90's with guys like Dino Radja, Rick Fox, and Eric Montross.

While I may not be a prototypical "oldie" :lmao: I am a Boston fan first with the individual teams second.

I think it would be interesting to poll how long board members have been a fan of whatever team they root for. It might go a long way in explaining how or why young kids became fans of whatever teams they root for. Having been a Pats fan for going on 30 years, and growing up nowhere near the Boston area, I became a fan as a kid during the 70s when I used to collect the mini-NFL helmets, and my favorite at the time was the Patriot helmet. I didnt live in an area where there was a home team, so I wasnt pushed by the old man to root for any particular team. So they became my favorite squad because of the most trivial of reasons. Steve Grogan, Sam Cunningham and Russ Francis were the guys. Francis was the first player Id ever heard referred to as "All-World". But I know most of my friends at that time are now either Dallas, Steelers or Raiders fans simply because they were the best teams of the day, and they were on TV all the time. So, Id love to know how many of those fans actually live in those respective areas. We cant all live in Boston, Oakland, Dallas or Pittsburgh. But those are probably 4 of the 6 most popular teams in the country right now, along with Id guess Washington, San Fran or Chicago. But Id imagine there's an entire nation of young 8-12 year old Patriots fans all over the country that are jumping on the bandwagon now because of how good they are. And when theyre in their 20s and 30s, theyll talk about Tom Brady and co. the same way guys nowadays talk about Montana and Bradshaw and co. And for young guys who jumped on board the Pats bandwagon after the first Superbowl win, good for you. But make sure you stick with 'em. Youll be in for some lean years. They wont be great forever.

A more interesting poll would be to ask Patriot haters when they started hating the Patriots. For me, it was immediately after the SB win against the Rams, when their toolish fans refused to admit that they were even the slightest bit fortunate to beat a clearly superior team, but I'm other Patriot-haters have had their own conversion experiences that they'd like to share.
I can understand if you are a Rams fan and was PO'd that they "better" team lost. However, if you are not a Rams fan, I can't understand how you could automatically hate a team that just pulled off arguably the best upset in all of pro sports. Maybe "immediately" to you means a few years later when certain long-time NE fans, and alot more bandwagoneers, started beating their chests.
I don't think you understood Ivan's post. It had nothing to do with the teams who played. It was the behavior of a large and vocal segment of the Patriots fanbase that was annoying to the point many people started disliking the team primarily because of their fans. If you offered them congratulations on their championship and upsetting a great Rams team, instead of gracefully accepting the congratulations those fans were offended that you didn't say the Pats were clearly the better team. I even distinctly remember long arguments that they should be recognized as amongst the strongest SB winners of all time. It wasn't every Pats fan, but it was far from a tiny minority. It was pervasive and long-winded enough that many of us just got turned off.Frankly, the same thing just happened with Spygate. I had just about gotten over my dislike, which like Ivan's, was caused primarily by that 2001 SB. And then I saw the ridiculous behavior this time and the dislike is back in spades.

I have a similar story. Grew up in Michigan but closer to Chicago... but was never really a Bears fan. I ended up being primarily a Seahawks fan because I used to get these sweatshirts with NFL team helmets on them. And I love greens and blues and silvers and so the Seahawks sweatshirt was by far my favorite one. Add that they were an underdog I could cheer for with some great up and coming stars like Warner and I was a fan.I still like the Seahawks, but having moved to Houston before the Texans came into being, they've become my favorite team as a true home team for a change.

I like Patriots until 2001. They destroyed one of my favorite non game related moments, the individual introductions at the super bowl, also they didn't beat the Raiders.

Oddly, that was one of my favorite moments in sports. Underdog squad, sacrificing personal glory for the betterment of the team. Beautifully done.

Just to add- I was always a Pats fan growing up in beantown with three older brothers. Like I said earlier I followed the team starting in the 70's but I also have to admit I was a Vikings fan as well. The Pats were so bad at the time that I needed a better team to root for during the playoffs. I liked the Vikings helmets and I liked Fran Tarkenton. I also liked the fact that they played and excelled in frigid weather. 1976 pretty much cemented me as only a Patriots fan as the team finally had a great year. I never really rooted for the Vikings after that year.

born in Boston so its New England teams to the death. Of course I freaked when the Sox won the World Series but now I gain a lot of satisfaction knowing my dad experienced a WSeries win. Robert Kraft is the best thing that has happened to the Pats. I remember #####ing when they gave up picks for Belichick. I have gotten over it and then some. I can't relate to just switching teams as a fan- I knew 2 guys that were lifelong Sox fans from that boundary zone, Rhode Island, and they just switched to the Yankees. I couldn't believe it and gave them crap (not nearly enough). My wife works with a doc from Ohio who is a massive fan, pretty cool.

I will become a Pats fan when they lose this year to the Dolphins.

I can't stand the Patriots. I can't stand Billly B. I can't stand Randy Moss. I can't stand Tom Brady.

Oh and I can't stand the Pats fans. Never met one I liked.

Classless organization.

Coach cheats not only in the game but on his wife. QB wants so bad to be better than Manning. Owner who doesn't care his coach cheated. Coach runs up score on anyone and everyone. Players taunt other teams by doing their dance and spiking the football on field logos. Sign one of the biggest waste in Moss.

Just my opinion.

Became a fan in 2007 after spygate. Gotta love Belicheck and crew laying down the smack to silence all the haters and crybabies.
