The broadcast was so loud that the Steelers coaches were unable to communicate, and the NFL rule is that if one team’s headsets are not working the other team is supposed to be forced to take their headsets off. It’s what the NFL calls the Equity Rule. Strangely enough, whenever an NFL representative proceeded to the New England sideline to shut down their headsets, the Steelers headsets cleared. Then as the representative walked away from the New England sideline, the Steelers’ headsets again started to receive the Patriots game broadcast.

Doug, i appreciate that you seem to believe that other teams have been going easy on the Patriots until now, I really do. But come on.

As an example, the Patriots were likely robbed of a title by cheaters in 2006. Like when the dolphins bought tapes of brady's line calls, beat the hell out of him, then bragged about it. The NFL didn't investigate or throw the book at the dolphins. But by today's standards, apparently that was a no no.

If the dolphins don't cheat that game, the Colts wouldn't have had the chance to host their afc championship game, as both teams finished 12-4. The Patriots were soundly beating the Colts in the first half of the game, and then the problems started happening. The Patriots audio went out. Crowd noise was not only pumped in, it was caught on tv, because they accidentally played it in a loop. And with several patriots dealing with the flu, the Colts accidentally dialed up the temperature, causing several of them to leave the game puking. Manning would go on to stage a huge comeback, which led to his only championship. Despite his rocky history against the Patriots, this was the only game during that run where he didn't have multiple turnovers. And the winner of that game got to play the Rex Grossman bears.

But these things weren't investigated. There was no tape gate, no headset gate, no crowd noise gate, no heat gate. As it should be. No quarter asked and non given.

This is a battle in the court of public opinion, always has been. And if some other team gets caught cheating against the Patriots - again - the response from most fans will be good, they deserved it. It's part of being on top.
you leave peyton out of this or i'll switch sides, dammit

I'm going to try to be more sympathetic here. It's probably involuntary. At the end of moneyball, when Brad Pitt was listening to his daughter saying it was ok if he left and he'd been a really good dad then she sang that caught in the middle song and he's all serious while he's driving, I'll admit it, I didn't mean to but I kind of cried a little. Like not all the way but a little misty you know. Its not cool to call you guys out for crying when I've done it myself. So let me say I'm sorry and be done with it.

@MarkDanielsPJ transcribed Belichick's statement on the espn piece, I left his typos, and probably added a few of my own..

I think overall it's kind of sad, really, to see some stories written that obviously have an agenda to them with misinformation, anonymous comments. Writing about warm drinks and trash cans, stuff like that. I think it's sad commentary and really, gone to a pretty low level. Sunk pretty deep. First of all, I would say our program here is built on competition and trying to improve ever day a... It's not built onexcuses. We just try to go to work & improve and find a way to get better. This organization has won a lot of games. Particular in reference to the great teams 01-03-04... All the great players that have played on those teams... to take away what those teams accomplished... it's just not right...I'm not going to get in a back and forth... but that's just how I feel about it.

I'd have to agree.

Watching this it's interesting that I now have feelings of dislike toward the Patriots. Why?

Because of Patriots fans so desperately wishing they were hated as much as the Yankees or Duke...I have actually fallen for their desperate little plea to be disliked and I dont like it.

I always liked Kraft well enough.

Brady too. Much respect.

But now? With all of these wanna-be Yankees in here and deniers of anything against their patron saints? I cant stomach them anymore.
Sorry you disagree with the federal judge, who said there was no evidence. The only one here denying the truth are the Salty Haters.
By the way...that Salty Hater thing? It's really stupid. I mean really, really stupid.
Hmmm, you can't understand plain English from the judge, so you start calling things stupid?

A skeptical Berman sounded unconvinced: "What is the evidence of a scheme or conspiracy that covers the Jan. 18 game? I'm having trouble finding it."

Sorry, doesn't convince me and most others.
That's your problem, if you want to deny the truth. A federal judge reviewed everything and said there was no evidence. Period.
Actually in his official opinion he said he is not addressing that question at all. In his questioning from the bench, while investigating what would be his official opinion he said he was having trouble finding that evidence, not that there was no evidence, just that he was having trouble finding it. You are hearing what you want to hear, not what was said.

Well after all my hard work transcribing, here's a better thing from Reiss:

Question:
I know that you were asked about the communication issues last night and I know that you said that you didn’t have any idea why that happened. The NFL released a statement we all saw. I was wondering if you had any answers since last night beyond that statement the NFL released.

Answer:
“No. No. I’ll just say, it’s pretty common, you know. Look, there’s a lot of stuff down there. There is the coach to quarterback stuff. Offense and defense. There is the headsets to the press box. There are the tablets. There is a lot of stuff going on there. You know, we had some problems. Just as an example, we had some problems in the first half and then it seemed to be OK. Then we got to the end of the game and most of the problems we had were on our last possession, our last two possessions on offense and defense. Sometimes it goes along and it’s fine, and then for some reason something happens and then you go to the guys on the sideline, the blue hats or purple hats, whatever they’re called, and then you tell them about it. They fix it. I don’t really know enough about technology to know how any of that works. But that’s how it goes. You know, we ended up hard-wiring a couple of our headsets to kind of eliminate the wireless part of it. But, you know, it’s not an uncommon problem. We ended up having to signal some of our plays offensively [when] we couldn’t get them in. I think we look at it as something you have to be ready for every week and we practice it. So, home, away, I don’t really think there is any common denominator on that.

“But I’d just say, you know, kind of tying this in with a couple things from last week, or earlier in the week. I just think overall, it’s kind of sad really to see some stories written that obviously have an agenda to them, with misinformation and anonymous type comments. You know, writing about warm drinks and trash cans and stuff like that. I think it’s a sad commentary and I think it’s gone to a pretty low level. It’s sunk pretty deep.

“First of all, I’d just say, I think our program here is built on competition and trying to improve every day and trying to work hard. It’s not built on excuses. We just try to go to work and improve and find a way to get better. This organization has won a lot of games. Particularly in reference to the great teams from ’01, ’03, ’04, back in there, and all the great players that played on those teams – Ty Law, [Lawyer] Milloy, Otis Smith, Rodney Harrison, [Tedy] Bruschi, [Larry] Izzo, [Willie] McGinest, [Mike] Vrabel, [Anthony] Pleasant, [Richard] Seymour, Matt Light, [Joe] Andruzzi, Steve Neal, [Deion] Branch, Troy Brown, [Tom] Brady, Antowain Smith, Kevin Faulk, Corey Dillon, Lonie Paxton, [Adam] Vinatieri. To take away from what those guys accomplished, what those teams accomplished, how good they were, how many great players we had, how well they played in big games, how consistently they showed up and made big plays and game-winning plays, it’s just not right. Those guys, they were great players. And many more. Those are a few of them. And great teams.

“I’m not going to get into a back and forth on it. But that’s the way I feel about it.”

Belichick was then asked a follow-up question specifically about Mike Tomlin’s remarks after the game in which he said “that’s always the case” regarding headsets going out at Gillette Stadium.

“I’ll just leave it at that,” Belichick said. “I’m not going to get into a back and forth on this.”

Asked if his team has the same issues on the road with headsets, Belichick said, “Yeah, I’m focused on the game here. I’m not going to keep talking about it. I’m really not. That’s all I have to say.”

On Friday, the NFL released a statement regarding the matter, via NFL spokesman Michael Signora:

"Technological and stadium infrastructure issues of this type happen at many stadiums around the league and whenever there are issues of this nature, we do a thorough review."

FYI: The Patriots had to use hand signals to get plays in during the 4th Quarter last night.

What happened to the Tomlin thread with the headsets?
Checked to make sure it wasn't merged here or with the game thread...sure enough, some homer pats mod hit the hard delete.
There was a lot of extraneous stuff in that thread, though I hate looking up information and presenting the conflicting media reports only to have it deleted. It's a waste of time in the end, so I won't even provide substantive stuff any longer. I'll just let the FFA guys and the homer trolls have at it. Sounds good.

Deadspin has it covered in its article, so I would encourage everyone to check that article out.

What they don't have -- I don't think -- is that idiot Zolak tweeting out "WOOOOOO!!!" once he'd gotten word that they were in the Steelers's headsets.

I do remember watching the Patriots back in the early '90s, back when they played on turf, back when you could easily move down within the first few rows of the stadium at almost exactly the fifty. There might have been several thousand people there that day. My girlfriend, her family, and I all had a pleasant get-to-know-you conversation while they got wiped that day in front of a quiet crowd, as always. I think Victor Kiam of Remington owned the team back then. They were a quality bunch.

Anyway, the support then is nowhere near indicative of the support they have now from their loyal, diehard, and passionate fan base that I commend greatly for their fortitude and passion for the game.

Belichick is a noted perfectionist and taskmaster. Yet he's unbothered by the Gillette headsets not working properly since it opened. Hmmm.
People still follow Bart Hubbuch?
Have no idea who that guy is, but that is a pretty good point.

Oh well he's a moron who trolls the Patriots and then called into WEEI and was made a fool of because he didn't know what he talked about.

And no, it's not a good point at all. I don't even agree that Belichick is a perfectionist. He's thorough, diligent, and prepares for anything/everything. Feeling that way about headset issues, as he appears to in his quotes, makes sense. He very purposefully never uses anything as an excuse. He makes his team practice with ####ty balls, plays loud crappy music, etc. Be prepared for anything, and deal with it.

I don't think they messed with the radio signals. Although Pittsburgh saying on their website that the signal would go in and out whenever they got the refs to tell the Pats to turn theirs off is pretty crazy. Who knows how accurate that timing or statement is/was.

Every team should be prepared to handle this situation but being able to control when things go on the fritz is definitely an advantage.

I know "they all do it" so whatever.

Looks like Bill views the headset stuff as just one more thing that might come up during a game. Something you might have to face. Like the league changing how DB's will be penalized. You coach everybody up for the reality. You prepare for it.

And you wonder why they win.

I frikkin love BB.

Yup. And if you can flip a switch whenever you like and tune the opposing team's headset to 94.7 Boston's home of the 70's even better.

Doug, i appreciate that you seem to believe that other teams have been going easy on the Patriots until now, I really do. But come on ...
That stuff about the Dolphins and Colts is all well and good. But you don't have to convince me -- convince the opposing owners who think they're getting jobbed right now and have been over the last several years. The ones who wanted Goodell to get something, anything on the Patriots.

Even B.S. perceptions can drive desperate action. That's one of things people mean when they say "perception is reality".

If they can keep focused through the deflate-sham on Super Bowl week, I'd say this group of Patriots probably aren't gonna lose the mental game.
I disagree. Any human can lose their mental game.

Besides, the Deflategate stuff during SB week dries up anytime the media is not around: during practices, and especially once the ball is kicked off. The media was incorrect that it would have some effect on the SB game itself.

I wasn't trying to convince you the Patriots got cheated. I was responding to your point that other teams might start cheating against them in retaliation.

How long before a HC orders one of his defensive players to take out Brady's knees?
Thinking this, too. It almost happened to Jim McMahon, and that was just for being brash.

There's a lot to lose doing something like that ... but, again, make someone desperate. Who saw Monica Seles' stabbing coming? Or Rudy Tomjanovich getting punched out? People can get pretty twitchy.

I'm glad these various complaints are coming up in real time now so we can see the garbage for the little girl whining that it is.

Still find it interesting that at any point in the last 15 years, the only championships called into question are the Patriots. Must just be a strange coincidence.

:lmao:

Yes, it is entirely possible that the evidence existed, but that the judge was having trouble finding it because:

a) The "evidence" had light-bending properties, rendering it invisible

b) The "evidence" acted like Schroedinger's cat: there was plenty of evidence showing guilt, but as soon as the judge peeked at it, it changed quantum states

c) The "evidence" was there, but the judge left his eyeglasses at home, so he couldn't find it

d) Belichick used the Force on the judge, and convinced him that: "these are not the droids you are looking for"

e) The judge's dog ate the "evidence" after eating his kid's homework

f) Bigfoot stole the "evidence" because I hear Bigfoot is a big Pats homer

As was the case then, it's probably best for folks not to cry foul on plays that are allowable under NFL rules, if only because it makes the other team seem better prepared."
