Patriots - Maybe Belichick gave something away? (1 Viewer)

I'm sitting home listening to WEEI (it's a Boston all sports talk radio station for those who don't know) and Bill Belichick is on live right now.

I think he might have just given something away - I don't think I'm imagining this.

A question was posed to him by one of the hosts:

"Bill, how do you feel about the draft value chart in reference to trading for this year, given the slots the Pats have (24th and 28th)?"

Bill said, and here is what I think is the relevant part:

"Well, we were talking about this quite a bit just today. I don't think you can really equate it to years in the past. If we feel the numbers aren't equal - in regard to moving down - we'll still probably do it."

= = = = = = =

To me, he's saying the Pats are very likely to move down from one (or both) of their 1st round draft picks.

I read this as if there is no one available that they have graded out as worth the spot they have or no one that they are in love with that they may consider trading down or trading for future picks.

Rumor has it 3-4 teams might move up into the late first to get Trent Edwards. Could be another JP Losman situation. Oakland, Detroit, and Chicago are possibilities.

???I've seen Edwards slated as a late 3rd round pick . . . not sure how he's jumping up full two rounds.

I would love to see the Pats trade out of one

of their spots to a team like the Raiders and

grab a high 1st rounder next year.

Where are you getting your info? News as recent as today says teams in the early second have their eye on him. Rumors say Martz has a man crush.

Smoke screen city. Belichick does not give things away. Reading between the lines: "Anyone interested? Fork over those picks - we're going to bend you over the barrell like we did with Baltimore"

Last I saw, NFLDraftScouts had him ranked somewhere around the 90s give or take a few spots. NFL Draft Guys have him as the #5 or #6 QB and the #72 pick overall.

Scout.com has him at #3. One of their experts has him as the top QB in the draft. I'll be surprised if he makes it past 40 on draft day. Sometimes these QBs fly under the radar due to low public profile. No one saw Kellen Clemens and Tarvaris Jackson coming last year.

Pats trading down is not really news. Everyone has them moving, its the direction that is in question. Plus, every talking head says that this draft is deep at CB, S, WR, and LB. Those are spots the pats need. It would make more sense to trade back and get two of these rather than one in the first. IMHO...

I did just find a mock with Edwards going to DET at 2.02, so I guess his stock has gone up.

I heard the same interview. Belichick said a lots of teams are trying to move down this year. He said teams have contacted the Pats trying to get two picks for one (implying they are trying to get the Pats to move up and give up both of their first round picks, or a first and a third). The original question was regarding the usefulness of the draft pick value chart for trading purposes this year. Belichick said that the chart is not really very useful this year because so many teams want to move down. He was implying that teams moving down may not get as much in return this year as in years past.I didn't hear him say or imply the Pats were moving down.

Thats a big if. To me he is saying If we feel the numbers aren't equal, then blah blah blah.IMO He is trying to attract suiters to make offers (even lowball offers) for their picks. Doesn't mean didly. I think alot of teams are talking trade right now and NE isnt really part of any of them.
