Here is the final ruling from the NFL:Bill Belichick has been fined $500,000 by the NFL.The Patriots have been fined $250,000 by the NFL.The Patriots will give up their first-round pick in 2008 if they make the playoffs. If they don't make the playoffs, they will surrender their second- and third-round picks.Belichick will not be suspended.“This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field,” Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter to the Patriots."I specifically considered whether to impose a suspension on Coach Belichick," Goodell also wrote. "I have determined not to do so, largely because I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice, or multiple draft choices, is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension."

Just announced by Schefter on NFL N too.

What is unclear though is which 1st round pick it will be since the Pats have 2 #1 picks....

Pretty light IMO. I'd have taken the game from them too and suspended Belichik for at least 4 games.

I remember over the years the Pats bragging after big games they knew the playcalling. I have never thought Belichick is as good as people think. I don't think he is as bad as he was in Cleveland, but somewhere in the middle. Even though other teams have not filed a official complaint in the past, I think they got off lightly.

Didn't NE have to give up draft picks to get him from the Jets, and now a 1st rounder or a 2nd &3rd round draft choice given up. That is a expensive coach.

Good luck Patriot fans.

Ask any owner in the league how much they'd pay for 3 SB rings. As for the penalty, it sounds about right.

I'm fine with that penalty.

Its costly. It could have been harder and it could have been easier on the P*tr**ts.

I think the "stealing signals is not always illegal" concept helps direct the severity of it.

But breaking the rules of the game that makes it as hefty as it is. A half a million for Belicheat hurts.

I am sure whatever penalty is imposed will be appealed and am willing to bet that there is some sort of concession made with a more palatable penalty.

3 rings more than made up for it.Weak ruling. Bump the Sheriff down a few pegs. Tough on players and assistant coaches, but light on SB winners. What a joke. But the fact that they were caught and punished will put a stigma on their dynasty, Brady and Belicheat. The court of public Opinion will be harsh but the Sheriff wasn't. Bust him down to Deputy.

Are you serious? A more appropriate punishment would have been suspending Belichek for 4 games. The 1st ruond pick is a much more severe punishment and BS IMO.What Belichek did is an embarassment to the organization and himself. Its a disgrace. But to think in the grand scheme of the NFL that this provides much if any competitive edge is stupid. That is the most egregious thing as a Pats fan. Why do it? Its just stupid.

I think that it's interesting that when crew chiefs get caught cheating in NASCAR, they get suspended AND fined. 6 races for the crew chiefs of Junior, Jimmie and Jeff so far this year. Isn't a head coach in football about equivalent to a crew chief in NASCAR?

So now that they've been exposed as a franchise with no integrity, what are the chances they tank the season to avoid making the playoffs, thereby keeping their first-rounder?

When they "surrender" or "lose" a pick, does the pick just go back into the pool (i.e. there would only be 31 picks in the 1st round next year), or do they give it to the Jets (the team they were caught cheating against). I guess what I am asking is, what do the Jets get out of this?

An 0-1 record.

Nonsense. The only thing that would've hurt him is a suspension, including complete banishment from the game over the suspension period. They missed a golden opportunity to really punish the hobo. Both he and the Cheatriots got off easy.
I get the impression that you were going to be disappointed with any penalty that didn't include banishing the team and franchise from Pro Football. The Pat haters should do a better job of disguising their bias and pre-existing disliking of the franchise.

I don't mean to pick on you here, but it is obvious who wants to see a legitimate penalty vs those that just want to see the organization crippled - regardless of what the infraction is/was.

Remember last year when the Pats lost to the Dolphins, it came out after the game that Miami was studying the Pats signals and play calls over the previous week. Perfect illustration that this is not an incident isolated to the Pats.

I agree. If they lose an extra first rounder, and he gets just a nominal fine that isn't all that harsh at all. He should have been suspended for at least one game, and probably multiple games. The fact that they would suspend Wade Wilson but not Belichick, that makes no sense to me. And why would the draft picks be dependent on how well they do? You cheated, one way or another. My guess would be that if they make the playoffs the pick is a lower first round pick, whereas if they don't the commissioner must of felt that an earlier first rounder was too much of a penalty. Overall, it says that we have a different standards for treating players than we do for coaches and organizations. It is a very disappointing ruling.

Losing a 1st rd pick is pretty harsh. Has any team ever been penalized to the point of losing their 1st rder where there wasnt players or coaches swapping teams?

The draft pick is a stiff penalty and fair. No suspension is ridiculous. As someone already mentioned. Wade Wilson gets 5 games for taking a drug to treat ED so he can make love to his wife. Yet this gets no suspension? Please explain it to me........and sloooooooooowly, cause it makes no sense.

and comments like this just lend legitimacy to my previous comment. I am not as sorry for singling you out as I was when I made my first post.

I personally feel it tarnishes what they've done under Belicheck a little bit. Simply because there will always be the questions of whether they did these sort of things during the playoffs/Super Bowls that they were in since he's been around (as teams they've faced in the past are already questioning this, i.e. the Eagles in 2005).

I think the penalties are fairly harsh. But I do agree that a suspension would have been the harshest. In fact, suspending Belicheck for a game or two, and not allowing him even in the stadium would have sent a message.............

The Patriots better accept this and be happy. It should have been much worse. Goodell is the one that imposed the penalty, I sincerely doubt he'll determine he was too harsh. It will not be reduced.

Actually, you are incorrect in that assumption. From the start, I called for the head coach to be genuinely suspended for four games. In my opinion, that would've been sufficient and more appropriate than any fine or loss of draft picks. If the commissioner had suspended the coach for four games -- with absolutely no team contact -- and that was the extent of the punishment, I would've been fully satisfied. As it is, I think this punishment is weak. Money means nothing to these guys, and they have a way to avoid losing their first-round pick (tanking, which a dishonorable franchise like this would have no problem doing if they regard that draft pick so highly).

A first is still way to much of a penalty.

third should have been the penalty and maybe a one game suspension!

Oh I'm sorry, I forgot the Patriots were a model organization. Oh wait, what's this whole discussion about again? :goodposting:

Glad that's over. See you in the Superbowl....wooot!Can't wait until the Pats put it on a few more teams. Will people still whine? "Well they were stealing signals (just like everyone else in the league) who knows what they are doing now. I suspect Belichick is using satellite imagery now". ####in sour grapes from a bunch of losers. Mangini's a flame...
:goodposting: Thanks for making me feel better for the first time in three days. Getting this crap out of the way now after only the first game will go a long way at the end of the year when they go undefeated and win another Super Bowl without any question of cheating, and it can completely untarnished this mud-covered image we’ve had to endure. Of course it’s easier said than done, but I’d have to think its Super Bowl or bust for this team. That’s the only way they can reclaim their dignity.

I agree...how does this make any sense???

It's their own first round pick. I think the penatly is fair. I mean, half million for a player might not be a huge deal but for a coach, that's pretty big. Granted, you have to think he will get help from Kraft and company (assuming they were in on it, though we will never now for sure)
