People are waiting in line outside the Circuit City here (1 Viewer)

There's a circuit city between the subway and my apartment. I walked past it on my way home this evening at about 8:30pm. There must have been 10 people waiting in line. It's freezing outside. Going into the 30s tonight.I can see this Circuit City from my window. The line is growing. I should fire up a webcam or something. Are these people ######ed?
Some people need to work a little harder to be able to afford things. If there are some great deals to be had, it's worth it for these people to wait in line, even if it is cold. What is so hard to understand about that?
I think you're missing the point here, Bentley.

I dont know. I dont see much difference between these freaks standing in line outside Circuity City for however many hours, and some nerd sitting at his window videotaping them and posting it on youtube.
I'm trying to help here.

I don't get the whole "lets go in a crazy panicked frenzy the day after Thanksgiving to shop for gifts" shtick. Agreed, it is hype and probably a few savings mixed in. Not one that I entirely grasp but one I can understand. I saw commercials last night and there were more than a few stores that opened at 4am and the rest open at 6. A few hours in one thing, 10-15 hours is another.

Otis>Imagine that the TVs were pharmaceutical products designed to lessen a woman's ability to defend against sexual advances to which they don't consent. Make more sense now?

And they say Rosie speaks slowly. :hifive: tip - hold your hand against something like the wall or table to keep your picture steady when using any camera.

Re: the hype, etc., some people really love this stuff. As I explained to a colleague working on my team, I have to work today. His response was that he was going to wait in line and do black friday shopping with his wife. He was all excited about it too.

He said they did this last year and didn't even buy anything.

Thanks. :hifive: Otis = not very smart wif cameras. And this thing has like a million options on it that I don't understand. Maybe I should RTFM.I just last night figured out to watch the videos I took of (1) my ex girlfriend and (2) my current girlfriend. No, neither is X-rated.

I bet some FFAers are out there doing this sort of thing right now. I'd love to know which ones.
Did it last year to try to get the 42 inch panasonic plasma for a grand. I didnt have a job then and the money i would have saved would have been huge. I didnt get it. :bag
This is what I don't get. Anyone who's standing in line waiting for this kind of a deal probably shouldn't be buying it anyway. No offense, but if you're unemployed, dropping a grand on a tv probably isn't the brightest move ever. I'd wager that most of of the folks in line are only using this "deal" as an excuse to drop $$$ they can't afford to drop on something they don't need.
I should state that i was unemployed because i was just out of school and was still interviewing. (i was actually probably working a little part time too) I had the money to buy the TV at full price, but being the cheap ******* that i am, i really wanted to save some extra $$. But, yeah i can see your point.

I'm curious too about how many of these black friday shoppers are putting these gifts on their credit cards. They will probably be the ones filing for bankruptcy in a year or two and blaming the big bad credit card companies.

you should have slapped that guy up side the head right there, just shopping with the wife on ANY day is bad enough, yet alone standing in lines for hours on end. I am with you, these people are morons.

I bet alot charge the tv and end up paying more or close to regular price in the long run anyways.

I have to agree with Otis here...I don't get it. I also didn't get people waiting in line for the iPhone when it came out. We all know, with time, that the prices will drop. Latest and greatest has an unreal price tag that can be avoided with patience. I'd also echo the sentiment that those in line relying on the "deals" probably shouldn't be buying this stuff anyway. I understand that there are some out there that are just cheap and will do anything to save a buck, but I'd bet that type makes up less than 1% of those in line.

I ended up going to target for another TV and signing up for their credit card for 10% off. Paid the bill the day it came and haven't used it since. :hifive: But I'm guessing that quite a few people do. There were some strange people in that line.

Or the mortgage companies....

:hifive: why not. not everybody has tons of cash to throw around or cares about wasting a couple hours waiting on line to save money on #### like this.
There is no product special enough that I would be out there in line with these schlubs to get one now.
Well said... thought the same thing as I walked back to my apt last night. The Best Buy and Circuit City on 5th ave both had lines. The Best Buy had a person at the front of the line with a tent that is used for tailgating! Ridiculous!

There's gotta be a way to Darwin these people. Or at least to revoke their voting privileges once they make a purchase.

My wife just called me from WalMart (she works in the bakery) to tell me the cops had to "escort" a guy out of the store. He had been first in a long line to get one of the 30 Wiis that were supposed to be available. Actually, there was only 6, and WalMart employees bought them all up before the store opened. The guy was heard shouting "They can't be all gone! I'm first in line!" ;)

They had so many skids of merchandise for Black Friday they couldn't fit it inside the store. They had to post guards on the back dock to keep it from all being stolen. I'm thinking a reasonable bribe would have been the shark move here.

You would think that WalMart would prevent this sort of thing if they know people are sitting out there all night to purchase this crap. Just another reason why I give Sam Walton's spawn none of my $$.

On a slight tangent here, is there seriously still a shortage of Wiis? Holy crap that's a successful product. Didn't that thing come out last Christmas?

Nintendo > everyone else

Funny stuff, but that is total crap that the employees can buy all of the items before anyone else can get into the store to buy them. But, what do you expect with Walmart?

Is it worth getting arrested for? No. But thats an absolutely Bull#### move on the part of that Wal-Mart. Yeah, its funny for us, but that really sucks for that guy, and its definitely not fair.

My wife normally goes out with her girlfriends shopping this morning.. She had to work this year so she couldn't go!

She said to me,

- "Hey, I have to work on Black Friday.. I'm going to need you to hit Walmart in the morning for me.."

me: :scared:

So I went out and completely tore up my knee playing basketball... Had surgery a week ago... I guess that'll teach that woman to try and make me go to Walmart on Black Friday!!!!!

I shopped with my wife last night. Pleasant two hours out, most of the Christmas shopping done, delicious sushi dinner on the way home and a nice night's sleep after some grabass.I suggest you upgrade.

I suspect that a shopping trip on Thanksgiving is a very, very different experience from one today.

I bolded the important bit for you, Otis.

For the record, I'm paying a couple hundred extra bucks and getting a different TV versus standing in line. I'm just not sure why you need to be an ####### about people that want to save a few hundred bucks.
:stirspot: I sat with 3 of these people at a thanksgiving table. These peopel are boring "shoppies" who see this akin to a good concert or superbowl. You can bet there will be a lot of giigles and cocoa in that line.

I'd rather screw my gf and sleep in. In fact I'd rather go go sllep in my car (40's here) thatn spend 30 minutes, let alone 12 hours with these folks.

I might not do it if you said you gave me that TV. seriously.

Pretty defensive here, Brent.
Just don't dig the whole "superior to the poor working stiffs" part of O's bag of tricks. 150% Otis, Heads up with gay poker robot Otis, and camera phone whore Otis are cool. This one's down there with fall in love with a different girl every three days Otis and unable to complete Otis.
who #### in your gravy Bentley?gobble gobble. Looks like somebody's got a case of the Fridays...

you went shopping and ate sushi on thanksgiving, ok then? Mine does all the xmas shopping and I don't have to do any, not sure why I would downgrade from that.

Blurry spy photo

I can't seem to figure out how to get a decent shot out of my digital camera from this distance at night. Maybe I should go wait in line to buy a new one.
Maybe you should have lined up last night to get yourself a decent camera to shoot pics at night...Either that or go see a Dr about your early parkinsons.

HTH

lolbut man your schtick is better online? Is otis only hilarious with his fingers? :football:

the above mentioned line being the only funny on in the 53 seconds... (but it was a homerun). Guess that's kind of like the fallaway three after a bad offensive series.

Because your post reads as if you don't enjoy spending time with your wife. I don't know why you would have put your wife in the equation if that's not how you intended it to come off.Oh, and yesterday wasn't Thanksgiving everywhere in the world.

People waited in line all night to get a Harry Potter book that was readily available EVERYWHERE, so why wouldn't people wait in line to save some $$$.For me to have to wait in line overnight, I would have to be guaranteed the tv I want and it better be free. But to each their own, I guess.

I think the Harry Potter thing has more to do with dressing up and getting out of Mom's basement after sundown.

Otis, you would've been TWICE as blown away by the following... I mean.. at least these people are saving hundreds of dollars potentially:

1) They had "Free Ice Cream" day at a ice cream store (sheridan's) near my office. People were literally waiting in line 2+ hours for a free $3-5 item.

2) Chipotle Free Burrito Day: People will wait in 45 min + lines for that too?

Yet. I think if they were handing out $5 bills, would these people still wait in the same line?

Seem -EV

This practically screams for a poll.

It all comes down to EV.

If the guy standing out in the cold for 8 hours saves $500.. maybe that's more than he makes in a typical 8 hour day.. and he's doing nothing more than standing.. so that's clearly +EV.

Now, Otis probably makes more than $500 in 8 hours, so him standing out there is -EV.

It's 10:30 PM here.. and it's 30 degrees outside.

For me to go wait in line from now until 6 AM .. i'm pretty sure the reward at the end of the tunnel would need to be ~$800
some people just like getting a "deal" whetehr they need it or not. I'll play 3 hours in a poker freeroll. The money, is not what I am playing for, its the excitement. These people are often just excited by deals (and this may reflect on the boringness of their lives too. same is true with star wars or video game nerds too. The line becomes a SOCIAL occasion.

"Pathetic and sad, but social."

(5 pts for the movie...)
