Per R. Rivera. no restrictions on C. Newton rushing (1 Viewer)

Per R. Rivera today he stated "no restricting Cam in the run game 6-7 runs a game and he is the red zone run threat". I was one that thought the Panthers may limit Cam's rushing, especially red zone carries, in order to protect their "franchise QB". I feel more optimistic that Cam may not suffer a Sophmore slump with this news, but being a Cam owner, maybe I am overly enthusiastic. What are peoples thoughts on this news. Change anything, or nothing to really get excited about?

It's nice to hear, but would he say any differently? That second of hesitation by a defender because Newton may run is a huge advantage. Wouldn't want to spoil that by admitting he'll run less this year.

I'm hopeful it's the truth, however.

No kidding. Per Ron Rivera, Greg Olsen will be the next Gronkowski as well. I'll believe both when i see it.

You believe both when you see it? Well I saw Cam run it last year, why would you think it would be any different this year?Ohhhh, because the ESPN and NFL Network moronic know-nothing-talking-heads say so. But when the coach says it, we have to wait to see.... Dude, you got your info and trust in the media all wrong.Tell me why oh why would the coach take the ball out of his biggest weapon at the goal line? To save Cam? Nope, coach wants his job, he will use the best player to score... just like he used him last year.

I understand why he said "both". For Cam to get 14 rushing TDs again, then on top of that turn Olsen into the next Gronk - so add 12 more receiving TDs on top of Olsen's 2011 total - well, that puts Cam on pace for 47 combined TDs for 2012. More power to him. I own Newton in a dynasty league. But my expectations are a bit lower than that.

yet if he said, 'we need to do a better job of protecting our Franchise QB, so we brought in another RB and are going to run Cam less', people would take that as Gospel because it came from the HC. Your theory of 'catching the defender off guard' still holds true, just in the opposite. "That second of hesitation by a defender out of surprise because Newton wasn't supposed to run is a huge advantage. Wouldn't want to spoil that by admitting he'll run the same this year as last year."Regardless, I've never wavered from my thinking that they are NOT going to decrease his carries around the goal. He was their 'franchise QB' last year and they still utilized designed QB run plays. He is a big guy, the plays they run give him the option to chuck it out to a RB/WR if he feels pressure, and frankly, people are paying $$ for tickets to see the wonder that is Cam Newton. I'm not naive enough to think that jersey sales don't impact how a player is used from time to time.

Cam will get his head blown off if he keeps doing that this year. That's why it won't happen. Wanna know how Rivera loses more games this year? Loses his qb.

Did you watch him play, last season? How is the linebacker sized Newton at risk running a glorified QB sneak, 10 times a season? I recall one solid hit on the play (49ers game), otherwise, he was not at risk at the goal line. It happened last year, and it will happen this year. There is no incentive to change it. It works, and Newton is very good at avoiding hits, unlike Vick.

That makes no sense. The guy is larger than most RBs, most LBs, maybe even as big as some DL. He is no more in danger of getting injured at the goal line than anyone. He will rush for scores at the GL. If he does not reach 14 again, that is fine, however it does not mean that he will not be used as a GL back. Maybe he gets 9-10. Still a weapon. He is smart enough and big enough to absorb contact without being injured.

I went and took a look at most of his rushing TD's from last year; of all his runs only four were the type that you'd expect injury. He had two over the top of pile dives and two straight into the pile, push forward type runs. Everything else was either a fake to Deangelo and Cam runs to the left (untouched), or from 15-20 yards out he takes off and has 2, maybe 3 defenders to deal with. Actually, in watching these, I saw only 4-5 actual Goal to go runs by Cam. Everything else was 8+ yards back. Point is, I don't see how he gets his head blown off when the majority of his runs are fakes to the outside or from far enough out that he is not running into a pile of D-linemen.

That's funny because they didn't play the 49ers last year...

Is this another one of those threads where people with no actual insight beyond what everyone else has read act like they have 100% confidence in their position... thereby the debate goes something like:

Yes he will.

No he won't.

Yes he will.

No he won't.

I love these threads. So many fresh, original perspectives!
