Pet peeve of mine (1 Viewer)

I've seen it written several times that both Vince Young's FP total and his FP/G score understate how good he was last year. His raw FPs are too low because he missed some time. His FP/G score is too low because he "played in some partial games".

Young ranked 11th in raw FPs.

Young ranked 10th-12th in FP/G, depending on how low you want to set your minimum. While it's true that Young averaged more FP/G than Favre and Rivers (who both had more raw FP), it cuts both ways. McNabb blew Young away in FP/G, but had fewer FP. And Jay Cutler and Byron Leftwich also had more FP/G but fewer games than Young.

How about that partial games argument? Well, Young ranks 10th (after deleting Garcia and Bledsoe, since McNabb and Romo were already ahead of Young). Young played in 13.66 games (and not 15 full games), Using FP per partial game moves him ahead of Brady (and Favre and Rivers, still), but Tony Romo passes him, McNabb still passes him, and Seneca Wallace does too if you want to count him.

Young isn't the only QB to miss some time or play in partial games. I'm a big fan of Young, but this partial games shtick has been a pet peeve of late.

Good point. People do this all the time to make their arguement sound more credible. Last year we were supposed to do the same thing with Leftwich- ignore his partial games, but for some reason, count everyone else's. The rb version is say "He had 2 50 yard runs taken away by a phantom hold" and act as if no other player in the league had a big play or two negated by a penalty.

FP/G is a great reason why Leftwich is a great pick in later rounds. If healthy for an appreciable amount of time, you have yourself a top-10 fantasy QB on the cheap.

not to mention you can expect more "partial games" given the fact that he's a running QB.
I wasn't aware he had any partial games because of injury..or him being a running qb...From my recollection, his partial games occured when Fisher was trying to get his feet wet in the first 3 games. Collins didn't throw 1 pass after week 3

I never said they were.

Sort of.If you're doing the "partial game schtick", I can see throwing out week 1. He had 20 attempts in week 2, did not play in week 3, but started each game after that.

I personally have never used the partial game excuse, but I can see where it might be appropriate in limited circumstances. Here, only for 1 game.

I see your point Chase, but I think it has been a valid point, when coupling it with the fact that it was his rookie season.

If you are a fantasy football player, or just an NFL fan, I think you have to come to the conclusion Young will be better this year. Now the team around him may not be, and it may not equate to win-losses but I don't see his fantasy value doing anything other than rising for next season. And thats what the partial games shtick tried to illustrate. It was like saying "Look at how much this rookie is improving week to week, and look at how it is helping my fantasy team".

You also have to remember.. The Titans have gottin worse this off-season, not better.

They lost a 1000yd rusher in Henry, replaced w/ rookie Chris Henry, they lost their #1 and #2 WRs, both replaced w/ a rookie and low grade FA.

If the Titans win 5 games this yr, I'll be shocked. Look at this way Young lovers, he'll always be throwing.

Point taken, Chase. And anyway, the far better argument is his performance over the final 6 weeks, when he was top 5 in almost any scoring system (and in the middle of a playoff push to boot). For a rookie, that sort of improvement in such important games down the stretch of their first year often indicates they're "getting it."
