Peter Jackson confirmed the rumor many have hoped for. Ian Holm will be reprising his role as the old Bilbo.

This will make an excellent tie to the Lord of the Rings movie especially if it is going to be Holm talking to Wood as possibly a short introduction before they flip back in time.

It should be noted that the ring is a very minor part in the Hobbit. It won't be known for decades after The Hobbit ends that the ring is the One Ring.

Bombadil is in LOTR.

But The Hobbit has Beorn, who I always thought was a kick-### character.

With 2 movies, they should not have to leave anything out as The Hobbit was much shorter than LOTR.LOTR - 1008 Pages for just the story, not including appendicies.The Hobbit - 320 Pages. I really hope they show how Gandalf introduces all the dwarves to Beorn and gets them all to stay, I always enjoyed that part as a kid. Anxious to see Mirkwood and the spiders, The Arkenstone and the Battle of the Five Armies.

I think that's the role that Legolas is playing. Also, I'd expect the ring to be a much bigger part of this film than the book. Can't wait for it to come out.

those noldrian elves did have descendants, arwen, Elladan and Elrohir, for example. elrond, who was born in the early 3rd age, son of celeborn and galadrial, participated the battle of the last alliance.

that kinda pisses me off.the only humans in the book were the men of laketown.

Huge alertThranduil was a Sindar Elf (those "high" elves who didn't go to Valinor). After Beleriand was destroyed at the end of the first age, he traveled east with his father to Mirkwood where there was a settlement of Silvan elves. They took his father as lord and Thranduil took up the rule when his father was killed during the Last Alliance. He adopted the Silvan language for everyday use since the vast majority of his subjects were Silvan but he himself (& Legolas) was of a higher race of elves (Celeborn was another Sindar).The reason Legolas went to Rivendell was that Thranduil felt threatened by the rise of Sauron (same reason Gloin & Gimli were in Rivendell) and was seeking advice. Before (& during) the Council, there was no plan to have Legolas (& Gimli & Merry &...) form a company to take the Ring to Mordor (though I think Elrond was nudging things that way). Some of those that volunteered to go did so spur-of-the-moment (such as Legolas & Gimli; also Merry & Pippin were almost left out).In any case, Legolas was one of the dozen or two most "royal" elves in Middle Earth at the time (at least, of those that were named). The films didn't really do a good job of explaining the background dynamic that went into the Council due to time contraints, I suppose, but it also would have been boring as hell on the screen.
