They should probably just name the MVP award for him.
If the award goes to the person who means the most to their team, he should probably get some votes this year. And, maybe a few coach-of-the-year vote too.
I definitely think this year could cement his place in history as much as any other year. 9 straight years of 10 or more wins and now what could end up as one of the worst in team history. I am not saying that Manning has everything to do with it, but just looking at the offensive rank of the team since Manning has been with the team, his worst year they were 19th in points and 12th in yards offensively, and that was his rookie year. This year so far 28th and 31st (did not count last nights game but I don't imagine it will help much). Hard to argue how important he is to this team.
Underrated? This word should never be applied to Peyton Manning.
Ever since September practically everyone has been repeating over and over that he IS the entire Colts offense and they will completely suck without him.
I think it says three things Manning is very very special - elite at what he does, the coach can't adapt (what does this say for the coach(s) of teams that still compete and keep them motivated) and team mangament can't get enough talent with mental toughness.
I think the coaching staff, front office, Dallas Clark, patchwork offensive line (injuries there), and the entire defense is far more to blame for this mess then Painter. Painter has been somewhat serviceable. The Colts are playing without three of their four initial? captains (Peyton Manning, Melvin Bullitt, and Gary Brackett) leaving them with only Adam Vinatieri. That might have something to do with the lack of toughness they've been playing with though a good coaching staff I think would keep a team motivated.
Looks like he took an 0-16 team to the Super Bowl. And probably should have won with it. Always looked like the best ever based on the eye test; it was only the amount of hardware that said otherwise. Well, now we know the reason for that discrepancy. He was a one-man team.
It also could be an argument why guys like Peyton and Brady who refuse to cede their practice/game snaps to the backup are being ridiculously selfish, and ultimately setting the team up to fail without them.

Ironic that the year he doesnt play is the year that cements his legacy. The Patriots went 11-5 the year Brady missed the season. The Colts? One of the worst teams in recent memory.
