Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys ::Thanksgiving Showdown:: (1 Viewer)

yeah I don't get the 'there's no pressure' stuff either. Missanelli was on yesterday, attempting to make a case that losing in Dallas would not only be okay but it might be a good thing for this team.

There's a ton of pressure on the Birds to win this game. This is a statement game and they can set the tone for the rest of the year by going into the Cowboys house and taking care of business.
Missanelli has this bizarre belief that winning one week makes you more likely to lose the next, and vice versa. It, like much of what he says, makes no sense.
Sal Pal set him straight.

"Michael you're my friend but what the hell are you talking about?"

This non sense and then his act like Foles is already off the roster drives me nuts.

Gotta keep the calls coming in!

I'm not pumping up dirty. But I think the Cowboys defense is a fraud and after watching that mouth breather Eli light up the Cowboys secondary I feel confident that Sanchez will have a good game.
The mouth breather with as many superbowl rings as Philly superbowl appearances? The receiver with "The Catch"? You philly phans must think that you have a single player on your roster with the success of Eli "the fudgetard" Manning or the talent of BeckhamJR. ##### philly, yall aren't phit phor this matchup.

2 years removed from Butt Fumble heard round the world on Thanksgiving, Sanchez has a chance to write a new chapter. Can he avoid the posterior of his linemen and lead the Eagles to victory, or will the gravitational pull be too much to resist.
Which begs the question: just how big are the butts of the Eagles O-lineman?
What do you mean? An African or European butt?

I don't know how you guys stomach that show.

If the Birds get up early on the cowgirls then Sanchez should be fine. If we get down, like we did in GB, then I'll be on the edge of my seat watching Sanchez perform under pressure. Should be fun either way.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

I'm only in the car for 20 minutes on the drive home and I tune in if he has Jaworski or Sal Pal on.

Remembering the Bounty Bowl 25 Years Later

As the years passed and Buddy Ryan's legacy in Philadelphia became more memory than story line, the coach told me a lot of things about his tumultuous five-year stay as Eagles head coach.

One thing he would never admit to, just as wouldn't when he was the coach, was The Bounty Bowl.

If you're too young to remember, The Bounty Bowl is the name given to the last time the Eagles played Dallas on Thanksgiving Day. It was 1989, the Eagles were on the way to their second straight playoff run; and Dallas was 1-10 on the way to 1-15.

There wasn't much of a plot, or much of a game to write about, after the Eagles blew out the Cowboys, 27-0 as most expected would happen.

Until word came trickling out of the Cowboys locker room that first-year head coach Jimmy Johnson and some of the Cowboys' players accused Ryan of placing a bounty on both Cowboys' kicker Luis Zendejas, who Ryan had released a couple of weeks prior, and quarterback Troy Aikman.

According to Johnson there was a $200 bounty on the kicker and a $500 bounty on the quarterback.

And it sure did appear that backup linebacker and special teams player Jesse Small, a Ryan hand-picked favorite, went right after Zendejas on the opening kickoff and the only time the Cowboys kicked off all day.

Ironically as Zendejas, who said he was warned, crouched down on the play, it was he who was called for a penalty for a low block.

Ryan, as he often did, laughed it off.

"Why would I place a bounty on a kicker, who can't kick worth a damn,'' he said then, and repeated to me years later when he subject was broached. "The guy was a six-week slump. I wanted him in the game.''

Ryan would say to me after the fact that he would tell his players at times before games. "I want to find out who their backup quarterback is today.'' But never used the word bounty.

Johnson and Dallas players ripped Ryan to pieces after the game. The coach said he went to find Ryan after the game, but "his fat ### ran off the field.''

Ryan's response?

"Fat?'' he questioned. "I've been doing that Slim Fast thing, I thought I Iost a few pounds.''

When Cowboy Steve DeOssie said about Ryan "that was the pathetic ramblings of a senile, old man.'' Ryan's retort was "I'm not that old.''

The Bounty Bowl was Ryan's Redemption. And if Eagles fans didn't already love him, they did after that. He stood up to the big, bad Cowboys, a team that had tormented the Eagles and their fans for years and laughed at them. Out loud.

It was also just one of Ryan's memorable moments against the Cowboys.

"When I got to town they told me all I had to do was beat the Cowboys and the fans will love me,'' Ryan said. "So I beat them every time we played.''

Actually Ryan lost his first Cowboys' game, 17-14, in 1986, but then beat them the next seven times in non-strike games.

And the strike game, in which legendary Cowboys head coach Tom Landry ran up the score, according to Ryan. And did use his regular players who had crossed the picket line well into the fourth quarter, set off another Ryan memory.

The teams played a few weeks later and the Friday before the game just after practice Ryan told a couple of beat writers to make sure they watched the whole game.

So with seconds to play and the Eagles ahead 30-20, Randall Cunningham took a knee on first down, took a knee on second down, and then faked a kneel down and threw deep to Mike Quick on third down.

When grilled about what he did after the game, Ryan smiled.

"(Landry) opened the can of worms,'' he said. "I closed it.''

After a 21-20 win over Dallas in 1990 when Calvin Williams caught a Randall Cunningham touchdown pass in the final seconds, Ryan gave us one of the best quotes ever.

"The Cowboys knows we're going to beat them,'' he said. "They just don't know how.''

Not sure how to say this without sounding disrespectful...but Eagles fans think this rivalry is more important then we do. There are 4 maybe 5 teams I think are more important historical rivals. I get you guys hate us, but we really don't think about you guys as much as you do about us.I find Eagles fans (Not all) the hardest to respect and have a decent conversation with in real life and here. I have great relationships with Skins/Giants fans who I both view as greater rivals.

Anyways, yes there is some interesting history, lot's of bad blood and hurt feelings. The above piece made me chuckle though. You guys enjoy your Lito song and beating Bledsoe.

Should be interesting tomorrow.
Lifelong Eagles fan here, and I always found that bizarre. I can't think of any other one-way rivalry like this one. Personally, I think more recently Eagles-Giants is the bigger/better rivalry, but the hatred for Dallas here has always been over the top. I think the biggest reason is the type of Dallas fans usually found in this (Philly) area. They're usually the stereotype bandwagon fan that has almost no knowledge of football, but are also the most obnoxious, in your face people when Dallas is doing well. Those guys just irritate the hell out of you and make you want to hate the team even more.
:goodposting: Mets-Yankees might be another one-way rivalry.
There was a Cowboys fan on Philly sports radio the other day claiming the Cowboys don't consider the Eagles their rivals. They consider the Steelers and Niners their true rivals. Apparently this guy has been cryogenically frozen for a couple decades. I got a nice laugh out of it.
It wasn't me calling...lol...but I agree. Yes it was years ago, but I still remember that and those were important big games that I got up for and had a ton of real meaning. Not philly fans cheering an Irvin injury, TO's return or your coach trying to kill a kicker. Yes there is hate. That is real and mutual. Can't stand the team, the fans, almost all of the players and anything Philly. I just don't think of you guys when I think rivalry. Maybe it means something different to me. I am not rubbing it in, but you guys haven't enjoyed superior success at our expense over your franchises history with some small exceptions. This is why I view NY, Wash, SF, Pittsburgh (Maybe GB on par with you guys) as more significant rivals.

I don't speak for all fans...just my thoughts.
Unfortunately still not really a rivalry. Not even interesting to watch.

3) Dallas O-line vs. Eagles D-line. I think Dallas has a HUGE advantage here. Eagles better put their big boy pads on.
I'm really interested to see how this plays out. Outside of last night the only time I saw Dallas was against Washington and the Dallas OL looked pretty bad, especially when Washington brought an extra man. Billy Davis likes to blitz and we're 2nd in the NFL in sacks. We've also been fairly decent against RB's as well I believe Gore is the only one to go over 100 against us this season.

My hatred for the Cowboys stems from the attitude that they're bigger than the game. I get that vibe from (local) fans and the national media even though there's an entire generation of fans growing up in an era where the 'Boys haven't won squat. But there always seem to be this national fawning over a very mediocre team. They seem to get shoved in our face no matter what their record is.Anyway, close game tomorrow with the Cowboys pulling it out. I say this only because its a Thursday game and feel if it was a typical week the Eagles would win. Happy Thanks giving everyone.

Fly, Eagles fly, on the road to victory,

Fight Eagles fight, score a touchdown one-two-three.

Hit 'em low,

Hit 'em high,

And watch our Eagles fly.

Fly, Eagles fly, on the road to victory!

E-A-G-L-E-S, Eagles!
Well I was wrong. Thought the Cowboys would put up a better fight.

I'm sorry, Dallas' last one was....?LOL @ Cowboys' fans using the "we used to be really good" line.
They love to reference Superbowls from when they were in elementary school just like the Redskins fans. Props to Giants fans they have come up big and are the least d bag fans. Cowgirls and Skins though are screwed for a long time with their owners.

All good man, the Super Bowl reference just gets brutal when it's been so long. I'm in Redskins territory so that's actually the group I have the hardest time tolerating. Could be a good end to the season though as we have Seattle next week which will be tough then 2 weeks could be a redo of tonight.

What a win. It's a league of matchups and not many teams will match up well against the Eagles. Unfortunately I think Seattle is one of the few teams that will match up well.

Bernie Logan D lineman for the Eagles was quoted (His thoughts on the Cowboys O-line) as saying "They're OK,I don't see what's so great about them"

I hope Callahan posts this in all 5 of their lockers.

Thank you Bernie!!!
Update on if Callahan posted it in all 5 lockers?
Bennie Logan on comments last week about DAL O-Line: "People had their own opinions I'm a nobody. We've got a lot of nobodies up front."

You forgot....Cowgirls have sucked for 20 years

Your QB can never win when it counts....or even a late season game against a back up QB they should easily win.
And yet Romo is hands down better then ANY QB that has EVER played for the Eagles.

So what does that say about your team?

Congrats on the win. You guys are in the running for a division title.
