"Rummage Sale" signs for people trying to sell their stuff at retail prices. if they value their stuff so highly, it isn't rummage. Call it what it is, a "Retail Sale".

To me, the object of rummage/garage/yard sales to get rid of stuff, not make money.

Hashtag, its a damn pound sign for one thing, and now i hear people literally saying it out loud when something happens. A lady tripped coming out of the grocery store and i heard some kid say 'hashtag walkfail" Wanted to grab him by the collar and shake the crap out of him
if you’re going to be mad at people calling it a hashtag, you should be just as mad at people calling it a pound sign. WTF. That’s not a pound sign. I can't think of a single time anyone used it to represent a pound.
It's a tic-tac-toe sign or a number sign.

You heard a lot of people saying "pound sign" lately? Yea, didn't think so.
I hear it anytime I dial into a conference call.
That's because on the phone, it is called the pound key (not pound sign). Pretty much standard usage in the US. When's the last time you heard a pre-recorded message say "Enter the last four digits of your account, then press the pound sign" or "number key"?
That is just about the worst argument ever made in the history of arguments.
I suppose it would be... if I were making any argument. He said he heard it all the time on conference calls. You do understand those take place on phones right? So it makes sense he would hear it a lot during conference calls. That's quite a bit different than someone going down the street and saying, out loud, "pound sign walkfail."
My point about it being a pound sign is that I've never heard it called hashtag until Twitter. My annoyance is the use of it in a lot of everyday life now, as the example i stated, or in response to a video posted on Facebook regardless of the topic. It seems to be a copout when someone cant think of something to say. Show a video of a fight, half the responses are # knockout or something stupid like that.

What sign is on the pound key?
Octothorpe.

A bunch of nerds at Bell Labs made it up. It has nothing do to with weight.

But I actually see it used in lieu of "lb"

At lunch today and heard a woman say...."Bee tee dubs" (instead of "by the way"). Just stop it.
oh em efffing gee.

that;s worse than just about anything else I"ve seen in here.
My daughter says BRB for be right back but I'll take it over to the Funny Things Your Kid Has Said thread. She's 7.
I don't mind it if it's actually shortening something. And/or done by a 7 year old.

I want to reach through the internet and time and three-stooges eye poke that woman from offdee's post.

No you didn't.
wait a sec... how did Offdee even know what that meant? serious question.
I know BTW is "by the way"...she said this at the beginning of a sentence where saying by the way worked. It took me a second to process what she said and when I realized it, just shook me head. She had one of the most annoying cackling laughs I've ever heard in my life as well, so that was just icing on her annoying cake.

Take someone to the woodshed.

Like, 'Goodell will really take Josh Gordon to the woodshed' when he exacts punishment.

No one has woodsheds anymore, and if they do why do people go back there for punishment or get beatings?

of course she did. saying some idiotic thing like that goes hand in hand with everything else in her arsenal being annoying.

eta: and I hate that if I ever hear that now, I'll know what it means. damn you, offdee. :hot:

Because that's where the switches are.
Don't you have to fashion the switches out of the wood? Or are the switches just laying around? 'Wait here while I make this switch.'

Sounds like an episode out of 'Little House on the Prairie' or "Walton Mountain'.

Oooh need a ruling. Don't hear this much and feel like it has some value left in it. Hold.

It is called the pound sign because the symbol comes from the abbreviation for weight, lb, or “libra pondo” literally “pound by weight” in Latin. When writing lb, it was not uncommon for scribes to cross the letters across the top with a line across the top, like a t.

Bell Labs guys named it "octothorpe."
