Man, pediatric cancer is the devil. Every cent should be spent to cure that. Not only would it likely carry over to every other form, we might save a kid who grows up to find the cure for other forms. Sucks disease is such a profitable biz.
Peds cancer medically is no different than cancer in adults. It's only sadder because they are so young. Heartbreaking really.
IMO, there will never be a cure. Not because the thought is it's a big money making machine, but it's just way to complicated/complex compared to other deadly diseases. There are 28 types of breast cancer alone. There is no rhyme or reason why someone with "good numbers" becomes stage IV while someone hanging on to end stage III lives for years. You can say diet, lifestyle, blah blah blah, but there are many vegans and marathoners who are sitting stage IV. I never imagined how complicated it all is until I was stricken and have spent a lot of my waking time reading up. I think the best we have coming is some sort of detection before it sprouts, to nip it in the bud rather than what we have now which is you have symptoms and get checked where by that time most of us will require the harsh treatments. Treatments like immunology is still pretty early out and it only helps with 4 types of cancers, not all of them.
Puketober focuses on getting $ for more research. That's great and all, if the campaigns are legit, which if they are, not a whole lot actually makes it to cancer research compared to big corp and pharma $s. What most of us need is in the now. I went through this alone (by choice to spare fam) and appreciate the little things strangers do for me from my medical team to lay people. If you truly want to help someone battling, simple things like taking them meals, cleaning, running errands- stuff like that is what is really needed. Most of us are not blessed to have a great internal support in place, so if you want to make an impact, random act of kindness is the best thing you can do. If you have the means, then donate to someone's gofundme to help them financially. Cancer is hella expensive, even with decent insurance.
My mission now is to educate and help those who are unfortunately in the same boat as I. I practically lived through Corbin's struggles as he's my friend's nephew. I asked God or whoever the higher up is back in Jan 2015 that to spare his life and I'll take the bullet. 5 months later I was diagnosed and he is today doing very well and in remission. Around that time my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I made the same pact. Today his psa is normal. Be careful what you wish for, but these two being ok, if I had anything to do with it then it's all good.
By the way, Oct is also liver cancer month which green is the color for it. Where is the 'awareness' for this one? I think we should keep Sept as ped cancer month and broadcast it as loudly as bc is and make Oct cancer awareness where everyone interested in helping picks out someone(s) and helps them directly. The walks and all is a good sign of solidarity, but it's not helping the individual now when the most help is needed.
