Player vs Player Ratings (1 Viewer)

Rounders

Footballguy
I have started my ranking process and I have been having a difficult time this year with a handful of players that are closely rated (according to FBG ADP) and I wanted to know what my fellow FBGers do when this happens? What "breaks the tie"? Is there some process you go through for each player or do you simply flip a coin?

Bye week comes into play, as does whether I'm looking for a boom/bust type or a steady type, and then some personal stuff - do I like them.

All things being close, I'll take the guy I like over they guy I'm  on.

For RB or QB, it's the OL and schedule that come into play.

For WR or TE, it's the schedule and QB that comes into play. I'll also look at the run game.

If there's any non-coinflip way to break it, then it's not really a tie, is it? It's just two guys who you consider very, very close... but not quite equal.

I don't have any ties in my rankings. I have players who I think would help my team very, very similar amounts, but in the end, I always prefer one to the other. I might prefer him based on age, experience, past history, ADP, his NFL draft position (aka "pedigree"), playstyle, surrounding cast, character, or something entirely different- it varies from player to player.

Upside range vs. downside risk.

If you have 2 RBs projected with RB20 stats, but if RB20"a" gets all the breaks he'll be RB10 but RB20"b" has upside of RB13, go with RB20"a".

Also downside - same thing. RB20a/b - if RB20a tanks or gets beat out, he's RB50, but RB20b is in a committee so his downside is in the 30s. Go with "b".

I generally agree with SSOG and Jeff's postings above, they covered the bulk of the points I consider when breaking ties. I'd also throw in that a particular player's injury history and his record of ability to recuperate quickly (or being a "slow healer") is another factor I'll look at - surrounding cast and coaching changes on the team in question are also significant items for me.

For example, I'll illustrate with 2 sets of wide receivers that I currently have tied in my projections for FP with the reasons I ranked one ahead of the other.

At #9 and #10 I have Roy Williams and Marques Colston (both with 90/1200/10 as projections) - However, Williams has more NFL experience and is entering his 2nd season in the Mike Martz offense with Jon Kitna also entering a 2nd season in the offense - I feel more confident that Williams will continue to progress in his professional development and his fantasy production should stay very strong during 2007 (hopefully with an uptick in the TD department due to better synergy with Kitna in Martz's offense). Colston has only one season under his belt (although he and Drew Brees are also both entering their second season in the New Orleans' offense, same as Williams/Kitna) - based on Colston's shorter track record, I prefer Williams to Colston.

At #24 and #25 I have Mark Clayton and Terry Glenn both projected at 70/1000/6, but rank Clayton over Glenn because Clayton is the #1 wide receiver on the Ravens now, he is entering the prime of his career (3rd year NFL vet) and Clayton is entering his second season working with a savvy NFL vet, Steve McNair. Glenn is the #2 WR on the Cowboys, and he's working with the less-experienced Tony Romo, who has only 1 partial NFL season under his belt. In my estimation, Clayton has a higher ceiling (more upside potential) - while Glenn is a good bet to end the season at or slightly above 70/1000/6, that level of production is near his ceiling due to playing across from Terrell Owens and the turmoil of working with a new coaching staff and a young, relatively inexperienced QB this year. Owens also has a ton of mileage on his tires (entering his 12th NFL season).

Just some examples...

I go with the team I'm projecting for the most points/yards.

In Wimer's post above, if in fact I had the same two sets of receivers similarly ranked, I'd go with Colston and Glenn.

 Add to that injury risk, job security, and "gut feeling", and you're in the right neighborhood.

Unless I know that a guy is going to miss games due to injury or suspension, etc., I project x16 games and then use injury risk as a tie breaker.
