Players drafted early & labeled Busts (1 Viewer)

I'm sure there are plenty of examples, just none coming to mind right now.

Hopin someone can give me a couple examples of guys who were drafted early (1st round). That were total busts with their original team. Moved on somewhere else to become an all-pro.

I keep hearing people say "we should bring in this guy, he was a 1st round pick and a change might do him good."

Thomas Jones?

It saddens me as a Bears fan that I didn't think of him.

I wouldn't call Jimmy Smith or Joe Horn a bust since neither was a high draft pick, but they each went on to major success after quiet starts on different teams.

My first thought was Ahman Green but he was a 3rd. Obviously he turned it up a notch in GB after fumbling his way out of Seattle.

Brett Favre /thread

Actually Favre was a second rounder I think. He was traded to Green Bay for a first rounder the following year.

Doesn't a guy have to actually play before he's labeled a bust? Glanville never liked him and they got rid of him ASAP. He was never considered a bust.

Good topic.

Donte Stallworth, in PHI and then NE, but then again every WR in New England did well last year
Andre Davis (2nd rounder) did nothing with CLE. He has improved greatly with Houston
LaMont Jordan (also a 2nd rounder) never got his chance with the Jets, had better success with Oakland

Kyle Van Den Bosch had 4 sacks in three years with the Cardinals. Has since had 31 sacks in 3 years with the Titans. He was the 3rd pick of the 2nd round.

He had 1429 yards, 7 TDs and 4.9 ypc his rookie season and was named Rookie of the Year.

Stallworth and VanDen Bosch are two good ones...

I'll also add Garrison Hearst...had a couple bad years with Cards before he became a stud with SF.

he may not become a Stud but when my niners finally got rid of RW McQuarters(1st rounder) i thought that hack was finished for the NFL. the SOB goes on to have quite a nice career.

I'm not sure why everyone's mentioning Plunkett. During his "glory" years with Oakland -- from '80 to '83 -- he threw more INTs than TDs. He was never one of the better QBs in the league and never sniffed a Pro Bowl. He had some good playoff games (and some clunkers) and a helluva Super Bowl, but stud is pushing it quite a bit.

Actually Smith was a second round pick.Ricky had a couple big years in Miami.Rob Moore had 1 huge year and a few good ones for the Cards after washing out with the Jets. Terrance Mathis did that too(Falcons/Jets)Recently Santana Moss and Travis Henry come to mind.Wow the Jets have had horrible luck with WR's the past 15 years.

Irving Fryar - not a total bust, but definitely underachieved as an overall #1 pick for the Patriots, flourished after he moved to the Dolphins, making two Pro Bowls, and then made another two Pro Bowls with the Eagles

:lmao: And Santana Moss stats havent improved since leaving the Jets, they have been pretty similar.

Derrick Burgess would be a good example except he was a 3rd rd pick slowed by injuries to start his career.

Rich Gannon

New England to Minnesota in trade.

Released and signed by Washington.

Released and signed by KC.

FA signed by Oakland where he goes to the ProBowl.

Eddie Kennison

Drafted in the 1st round by the Rams and had a good rookie season followed by two terrible years. He then bounced around to the Saints, Bears and Broncos before ending up with the Chiefs where he resurrected his career.

Eric Moulds looked like a bust after his first two years.

Lincoln Kennedy was a top-10 draft pick by the Atlanta Falcons who for whatever reason didn't play well for them. He was traded to the Raiders for pretty much nothing and went on to be a pretty good right tackle making 3 Pro-Bowls and 2 All-Pro teams.

I just looked it up. I did not realize he has 2 Pro Bowls with the Rams.I remember the trade:

Bettis was traded to Pittsburgh on draft day (immediately after the Rams drafted Phillips) with a third round draft pick in exchange for a second round pick in 1996 and a fourth round pick in 1997.
He was traded to Pittsburg for almost nothing. Then in 1996, he was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year.Info from Wikipedia.

Ricky was a huge bust in New Orleans, he was supposed to be Walter Payton, Tony Dorsett and Earl Campbell all rolled into one.
