Players to avoid drafting (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Apologies if this thread exists and and I missed it. I found out about this forum pretty late last season and I sure wish I found it prior to my draft. I ended up take Dalvin Cook in the late 4th and later realized how so many people on this forum were down on him and avoided him in their drafts at all costs.

What are some players you are going to avoid drafting this year because their stats/age/analytics/your gut feeling are saying DON'T?

I can’t get too exited about Michael Pittman. ECR WR13, ADP WR16.

2023 WR14 / ppg WR18
2022 WR20 / ppg WR23

I expect Downs to continue to develop & AD Mitchell should see some high value targets. There are a lot of WRs being drafted around him which I feel have more upside.

His floor is solid but given his low adot & aversion to TDs I don’t see the use case for taking in the 2nd or 3rd. Feels like he should be more like WR22-24.

Is the question avoiding at ADP but willing to take if they fall a bit, or avoiding at ADP so much, they might as well not be on the board even.

Avoiding at ADP guys for me:
Anthony Richardson, not sure he can pass or stay healthy. Much more confident in Stroud in that area or waiting and taking Dak or even Purdy.
Breece Hall, receptions feel like a fluke to me, and Jets in general give a "Dream Team Eagles" vibe. Maybe at #7 or so, but I've seen him go #2 in some drafts.
Bijan Robinson, I don't think Allgeier just goes away, I like Bijan, but more around 12 than 6.
Ja'Marr Chase, I think he's overrated as a talent and have questions about Burrow's wrist. 1/2 turn guy for me.
Justin Jefferson, I think JJ is the best WR in the NFL, but Sam Darnold is probably the worst starting QB in the NFL. I'm out in round 1.
Garrett Wilson, like (don't love) the talent, I think he's being drafted at his absolute ceiling, and that's if Rodgers is MVP candidate Rodgers. He's a mid-2nd to me.
Trey McBride, run 1st team, and McBride has major target competition he didn't have a year ago. Can't see case for him over Andrews and can make case for Kittle/Kincaid over him.

Avoiding so much they may as well not even be on my board guys are:
Caleb Williams, Bears D is good, and while I love Williams long term, there are safer more proven guys (Tua, Goff) going in the same area.
D'Andre Swift, never been impressed with him, and fully expect a 3-man RBBC.
Brian Robinson, Ekeler is a bigger threat than Gibson was, and Daniels could take rushing scores. YPC should improve, but everything else could go down.
Christian Kirk, Jags seem to want to be a more downfield team given Thomas/Davis adds. Rather attack a better pass game with a higher upside shot on KC/GB WRs.
Keenan Allen, love the player, but I think Moore is the clear #1, and Odunze could see a bigger target share than expected. Better real life than fantasy this year.
Diontae Johnson, I think some expect him to be an upgrade from what Thielen was last year, but Thielen is still there, and earned Young's trust.
Cole Kmet, very easy to see him being 4th in targets on a mediocre passing team.

In redraft, Rome Odunze. He's got a fellow rookie at QB and two veteran WRs with long histories of production in front of him. And a decent TE. And the team has a new offensive system that we don't know much about yet. Unless injuries bump him to first or second on the target pecking order, or the offense takes an unexpected leap like the 1999 Rams, I have a hard time seeing how he will help much in redraft.

this is really the crux of the question. There isn't really anybody I won't take but there quite a few guys that I am sure someone will take long before I would so I likely won't ever get the guy. Some of the names include:
  • Puka: I am not sold that one year under absolutely perfect conditions will translate to this year. His price is his ceiling and I don't think he hits the ceiling.
  • MHJ: Rookie that is being drafted as his ceiling. I will let someone else take that chance.
  • Bijan: I agree with travdogg above. Other guys I like better in the top half of the draft
  • Richardson: Too much injury risk. I like other QB's better in that range.

Kyren Williams
Puka Nucua
Isiah Pachero
Devon Achane
Amari Cooper
Any QB before round 9 unless SF or 16 team league
The fun thing about FF is differing opinions. I'm targeting every single guy on that list at or above ADP, especially early QB.

Yeah I love all these players except tiny bones & haven’t waited on QB since running/mobile QBs became a cheat code.

haven’t waited on QB since running/mobile QBs became a cheat code
Speaking of that my long time league never adopted that. We've always counted running yards for QBs the same as passing yards. So 200/100 is now the same as 300/0. At first I wondered why but I'm glad in that it sometimes gives you value with stone footed QBs. I also don't like the way fantasy thought has crept into fan thought when it comes to guys that can't pass but can run real good.

Similarly, my main redraft league still has guys who wait on QB because passing TDs are 6 points, which mitigates some of the advantage that running QBs have.

This is something I was bringing up in travdogg's threads last year. He was always ranking Cousins low, and that made no sense to people who play in leagues with 6-point passing TDs.

Drake London. I think he'll be really good, but top 10?
Pittman--PPR machine last year. I don't think Richardson throws it as much or feeds Pittman as heavily as Minshew did
Diggs--Really think the 2nd half of 2023 was at least part fall off. He'll have way more target competition in Houston
Zay Flowers--I just always like someone ranked after him more.
Odunze--think he's going too high for a guy that is at best 3rd in the pecking order, maybe 4th or 5th depending on how they use the RB/TE in the passing game
Worthy--I'm assuming Rice doesn't miss that much time. I think Rice and Brown are the starters and Kelce obviously takes a ton of looks.
Keon Coleman--Wasn't a believer pre-draft. Bills don't seem to be singing his praises so far.
Quentin Johnston--Same as above.

Achane--electric but just too high for a guy that won't have the volume and seems like a fairly high injury risk.

James Cook--I don't think they want him to be a huge volume back. I don't think a Josh Allen RB ever sees an insane pass catching volume. Ray Davis will take some passing/goal line work. Allen still takes a ton of goal line work

Aaron Jones: I just can't shake the old man switching teams vibe.

Swift: Think it's going to be more of a committee than his ADP suggests.

Trey Benson: Being drafted like more than a handcuff. Cardinals clearly signaling it's Conner's job.

Corum--going like he'll have a big enough weekly role to use without a Kyren injury. I'm not buying it.

I'm going to be hesitant to draft any Bengal at ADP unless they can somehow show the team won't have yet another slow start.

Marvin Harrison Jr. - I feel like we're asking him to have an almost all-time rookie season at his current price.

Charger RBs - Not playing that guessing game.

QB:

Richardson. It used to be you drafted these mobile QB's in the later rounds and reaped the rewards. He's being drafted top 5 frequently. That feels like he's already being drafted at his ceiling.

Rodgers: don't trust the age+ achilles

Daniel Jones: Got all his value from his rushing ability, now coming back from an ACL. Will he be as mobile the 1st year back? I'm not gonna be the guy hoping for it.

TE:

Hockenson. He may miss half the season or more. He won't be himself at first. If you want him, let someone else draft him and drop him after missing several games.

Kyren Williams
Puka Nucua
Isiah Pachero

Even if you if 6 points per TD throwing and rushing and bonus point for every 25 yards passing and a point for every 10 yards rushing?

@travdogg
Excellent post above, hence the heart emoji

Christian Kirk...we've had this discussion before but I will gently remind you that in 29 games he has started in Jax, he's amassed
140/1900/11TD with a young and improving QB but Lawrence has his detractors as well.

This guy over 17 games basically avg 85 catches or 5 per game and about 1,000+ yds and maybe 5-6 TD
He doesn't usually have nuclear games but he is solid on a roster especially as a WR3/4 behind the heavy artillery

I've seen where he is a 6th round pick in PPR? I would prefer him in the 7th-8th so i agree his ADP is a little high
One of these years he is going to have a career year, also I would imagine his guarantees from when he signed over 2 yrs ago in Jax are about gone
He. makes $16M per year which ain't cheap but we see where the market is going, he could have a big year and demand a new contract or extension, he has some intangibles that might work for him this season and has very little competition for targets right now.

He's a Top5 NFL Slot-WR, he just isn't a fly pattern type

Who`s got him top 10? Hes a rd 2 WR for sure

Bijan Robinson, I don't think Allgeier just goes away, I like Bijan, but more around 12 than 6.
This is probably the only one I really question, although MoP makes some good points about Kirk.

Why won't Allgeier go away? It was beyond obvious that he was a major downgrade compared to Bijan last season. With the new coaching staff I see no reason they will simply not put their best guys back there and feed them. London & Pitts are the only other skill players of note on the roster, so I don't expect an all out wide open aerial offense. And Cousins is a major upgrade at QBs so defenses won't be able to simply load the box. The o-line isn't all world but it's mostly homegrown with four starters who have been playing together for two full seasons now (and three have been consistent starters since 2019). I like continuity on the offensive line.

Things seem to be lining up nicely for Bijan IMO.

Top 10 WR's.

He's a guy I'd love to have at like WR15 or so. But expectations are through the roof. And I'm just not in at his price.

Anthony Richardson (QB5) - I agree that QB5-6 feels very high. I also think that his pre-season rankings may not be indicative of true sentiment (don't feel like I'm alone).
Kyle Pitts (TE6) - Haven't we done this before?
Kyren Williams (RB8) - It's actually nothing against Kyren, but I feel like McVay is loose with RB love.
Chris Olave (WR13) - love the talent, hate the QB.

Puka - not at current ADP if Kupp is healthy
Pittman - not unless he falls
London - not sold on him as a WR1
Garret Wilson - is he really an elite talent
Achane - wish I had drafted him as a rookie, but not in redraft at his ADP
Swift - there is a reason teams keep letting him go
Richardson - maybe at QB10
___________________________________
I don't understand how Cooper and Diontae Johnson could be listed. I think they are bargains at their ADP.

Only way I would want Daniel Jones is maybe on WW

In regards to Garret Wilson. Back to back 1,000 yard seasons with Zach Wilson, Trevor Siemian, and Mike White as his QB’s, I lean toward him being elite.

I think Gabe/Thomas is more competition than Ridley/Zay or Marvin/Zay was. I'm not sure the Jags use Gabe Davis like Buffalo did, or if they think he can be something more, and I think they want to get Thomas going, add in the NFL target leader at TE, and I think Kirk's 1000-6 average is closer to his ceiling than his expectation. Maybe I'm too low on Lawrence, and that in turn pushes Kirk higher, but its also not a passing game I want to play those odds on, because the ceiling isn't high. I'll take the Jayden Reed/Hollywood Brown types over Kirk with the higher upside passing games.

Bijan Robinson, I don't think Allgeier just goes away, I like Bijan, but more around 12 than 6.

Allgeier is a good RB. Bijan is better for sure, but Allgeier is a season removed from 1000+ yards at a 4.9 clip. He's also never fumbled in 2 years and was the #1 rated pass blocking RB in the NFL last year. He's going to have a role, and it might not be THAT much smaller than it was last season. I'd be a little surprised if Allgeier had under 150 touches.

I do agree with most of the rest, though I have some concerns about any player coming off an Achilles tear just bouncing back to normal. I do like Bijan, but I don't see him as a threat to be RB1 overall, and I'm not sure he's better than guys like Gibbs, Barkley, or even Henry later, let alone the WR's (St. Brown, AJ) that you have to take him instead of.

I’m wary of drafting Lions primarily because of the playoff schedule. Week 15 Home vs Buffalo, Week 16 Away vs Chicago and week 17 Away vs Frisco.

The Chicago game is most concerning. Goff on the road outdoors in likely cold weather and against a likely good defense is asking a lot. Lions have not played well facing this many adverse factors.

Almost every NFL team has a tough game sometime at fantasy playoff time. Things change during the season but as things stand now I’m likely to look for some less initial risk.

We'll have to see post Arthur how the backs are used.
It's been quite some time between coaching stints but Morris previously had Cadillac then he fizzled and subbed him with Legarrette Blount and ultimately the team fell apart with bad roster management as much as the blamed coaching.
The Falcons teams he was coaching (asst HC) were just before they fell apart and Arthur took over. So he had prime Matt Ryan and Julio but his backs were Freeman and Tevon Coleman.

(Bijan owner here)

When he talks nowadays, you can almost see him squirm as he tries to say how much better Bijan is and how valuable he is when compared to the others yet be respectful of them. I appreciate that a lot. I'm watching like yeah yeah we agree. They were meh with some skills but meh and Bijan is great. We're on the same page.

He's said a few times that Algeier has a defined role that the previous staff used very well and they'll use that but when asked if he'd be the GL back, he said the game (line play) will dictate that. He does not want to be predictable and he went through that years ago (with Blount probably) so...again I'd watch the interview and think he's saying what I want to hear.

I haven't seen anything concerning about Bijan usage from their staff. Just the other day he was mentioned as load management time management garbage and...ok rest him this summer, ok good

The Lions are one of perhaps the Top 4-5 teams in the NFL right now and if they aren't then they are likely on their way but rather than walk thru a jungle to avoid a fight, you should not be afraid to start ARSB, either RB as long as they have a clear role and Goff is also a decent start many weeks. The Lions have a strong OL, they are built in Campbell's image, sometimes I have to remind people of the first thing Dan Campbell did when he coached the Miami Dolphins for the better of a season before he went on the an Asst HC under Sean Payton in New Orleans for 6-7-8 yrs whatever before he took on willingly, the Head Coaching job in Detroit, he coulda other jobs but he wanted to meet the challenge.

DAN CAMPBELL had Miami run the OKLAHOMA DRILL!
It's like outlawed now

Buffalo could be in for a rough ride at times this season, as a Miami fan I look forward to laying them twice this year even though i know they are always tough to beat.
The Bears, really? You're scared of them?
SF week 17, hey if I get that far and in the Finals, I'll look on the WW if i think I really need a switch, you get waivers all to yourself and one other team that week, you can play a softer match up if needed, many teams will only carry 1 QB

How about the first 14 games?
You gotta get to the post season to win
In my favorite league, now going on 25+ years, 5 titles, 7 runner ups, I joke that I''m the bridesmaid and only 2-3 times i've missed completely.
Some of those teams I won with were not my favorites but they got hot at the right time.

Rashad Penny as a recent example, won me a title or filled in the blanks that I might have had at RB down the stretch
Luck plays a huge role but you also have to be good at picking the right guys on any given Sunday

Good post, hope you're not offended by mine, just wanted to let you know you might be over thinking it
Good Luck

Thanks I always overthink things. So appreciate your intent. But I have had the habit of making the playoffs but then getting smoked when too many of my players have unfavorable matchups.
So I pay more attention to playoff matchups and things do change during the season.

I am a Detroit fan and follow the team closely. One of the things that has been consistent each year is that Goff has not performed well on the road and even more so against good defenses and outdoors.

I think we differ on how we look at Chicago’s defense. They were playing well at the end of the year and I think it continues.

Appreciate you taking the time to respond. I read some of your other posts today and found them interesting.

Haven't looked at ADP closely but won't be drafting these guys unless they fall to me:

Cooper Kupp - Health
Travis Kelce - The wheels have to fall off at some point. Haters gonna hate hate hate
Garret Wilson - Don't trust Rodgers health, Jets always make me nervous!
Mixon - Like the team but too many miles
Stefon Diggs - Two Texans! CJ Stroud would be my top target from this team
Ja'Marr Chase - I won't take him as high as he goes

  1. Anyone over 32 years old
  2. Anyone under 22 years
  3. Anyone at their ADP
  4. Anyone coming off major surgery
  5. Anyone who had cosmetic surgery in the off-season
  6. Ambidextrous players because they're indecisive
  7. Geminis for the same reason
  8. Anyone who says they don't like Country Music but haven't actually listened to Country Music
  9. Anyone who enjoys listening to Country Music
  10. Anyone who prefers artificial turf over grass
  11. Anyone who pretends to "get" Lars van Trier's films
  12. Anyone who says vinyl sounds "warmer"
  13. Cat people People who settled for cats.
  14. Beer snobs (I like a nice hazy IPA, or double bock as much as the next guy but drink a damn Coors Light and get over yourself)
  15. Anyone who still says "NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!"
  16. Anyone who doesn't get a little misty when Billy Dee Williams says "I love Brian Piccolo."
  17. Anyone who doesn't get that last reference
  18. Anyone who doesn't eat fish
  19. Anyone who says they have "shares" of players
  20. Anyone who drives a Cybertruck
  21. Anyone who isn't a little envious of the people who were able to get the Boring Flamethrower
  22. People who get really passionate about the difference between iOS & Android
  23. Anyone who doesn't love The Bear
  24. You know who you are
  25. Aaron Rodgers

Jahmyr Gibbs - I am amazed but not surprised we have made it through this thread without his name being mentioned several times. I think his frame and running style is synonymous with Devon Achane. Gibbs is getting picked on the 1/2 turn and I just don't see it. We are worried about Tyler Algeier eating into Bijan's carries but Montgomery has a massive contract and will eat into Gibbs. I'm out.

Marvin Harrison - We are really trying to hit big on these rookies, so much so that they aren't even deals anymore. Pass.

Davante Adams - Love the player, hate the situation. I think he is definitely a top 10 receiver but I don't trust the team or the QB.

Chris Olave - *see Davante Adams*

Travis Kelce - He probably has one more productive year left in him, but I am not bold enough to draft and find out. Late 2nd, Early 3rd is too rich for my blood.

Any of the Houston Texans WR's - someone will perform, but I don't like playing the fantasy guessing game every week.

Michael Pittman - It was said before and I have been beating this drum all off-season. Too many mouths and an unproven QB - his ceiling is capped.

I really like this list other than Cooks. I think he sees more volume than he ever has. He could be prime Leveon Bell this year. Like the year Bell went nuts with yards but only had like 6 total tds.

Right now Benson is running 3rd and 4th string at camp.

Michael Pittman - It was said before and I have been beating this drum all off-season. Too many mouths and an unproven QB - his ceiling is capped.

Gibbs was like rb 4 last year after week 6ish and Montgomery makes like 6 million a year.

Harrison is a great call because he is a rookie and going by last year's ranks he has a very tough schedule.

The beautiful thing about partial stats is you can manipulate them to favor your perspective. Devon Achane had a 3 game stretch where he totaled 103 PPR fantasy points, maintaining that pace would put him at a historic 583 fantasy points on the year.

The fan love for Gibbs is so unreal. I like him. He's a special player but Gibbs 2.0 can be drafted 2 rounds later and is considered a bust in this thread by his ADP.

3 games is a little different then 12 weeks.

I wish you'd really kindergarten this up for me and explain which is better. It's a small sample size of a potential career.

We are expecting a monster year from Gibbs and I'll say, he is the RB I am least comfortable with in the top 10.

I'll drop the semantics but surely, a world exists in your mind where Gibbs is being overdrafted - backfield splits, injury is possible there and Gibbs isn't quite as dynamic as Achane, so... again, I'd view Achane as the less risky play going 2 to 3 rounds later.

Where is Achane going 2 or 3 rounds later? Every where I draft Gibbs goes at the 1/2 turn and Achane goes at the 2/3 turn.

Are you the girl in your pfp?

Every question I send, you return with another question. Regardless, there is room to say Gibbs belongs closer to Achane; whether that is Gibbs dropping or Achane rising, that was the question I posed to you.

Gibbs scored 50 more total fantasy points than Achane. Gibbs was almost 1.5PPG less than Achane. If you're trying to hitch yourself to a rocket... Achane is available later. The only thing standing in front of him is a 32 year old RB. Gibbs has a lot more in his way. If Achane & Mostert stay healthy and Montgomery and Gibbs stay healthy... Achane >> Gibbs.

Justin Jefferson, I think JJ is the best WR in the NFL, but Sam Darnold is probably the worst starting QB in the NFL. I'm out in round 1.
What if Darnold has a resurgence year ala Geno? and if he sucks then JJ takes over. I think his talent is worth the risk. Though I don't really mind if owners think like this and he falls to me in late drats though.

Anyone who still says "NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!"

didn't want to be on your team anyways

Too many mouths and an unproven QB

I can understand why you'd say that but the guy was QB 8 in his fist 2 weeks so I think there's some promise there. I agree that going ahead of Love, Prescott, Purdy and Goff is sort of insane. Tua and Herbert I sort of understand but I'd be willing to drat Pittman and Richardson

Yes that is me. We disagree on Achane, I just want to know he is going two to three rounds later than Gibbs. I play a lot of fantasy and that is way off on his ADP compared to any site I use, but maybe there is another site where I could make some teams and take advantage of it.
