Playing golf with people that..m (1 Viewer)

Keep track of their score and bring it up at the end when your total doesn’t match their total.

What kind of cheating? Roll the ball in rough? Blatant stroke shaving? 15 clubs in the bag?

If money is involved I’d be pissed, otherwise youre really just playing against yourself and the course anyway

I agree.

However, there is a guy I play with (no money on it) that brags about his fictitious score after the round which is very annoying. I keep a mental note of suspicious occurrences throughout the day and remind him about them when he brings his score up.

Really depends on what you are classifying as cheating and the situation. Out for a weeknight round with my buddies and you roll the ball out of a divot in the fairway or You drive down to your ball and  it is OB and rather then go back to the tee and hit again you drop and take a penalty to keep play moving no big deal. We are usually playing vegas for dollars and quarters so who cares. Now we did have a guy that played with us semi regular and went on our Myrtle trip who you had to count every stroke because he would out right cut 7 to 10 strokes a round if you didn't call him every time, that is BS and annoying in any setting, needless to say he has been "replaced" in our Myrtle group.

Again I'm talking just out playing for fun with buddies, no or low stakes. We all vary from probably 8 to 17 handicaps so if we hit a nice shot down the middle of the fairway it seems an unfair reward if it is in a divot or on a bare spot because it is a muni course and not perfect. However if you are playing in a club tournament or a league then unless it is specifically written in the rules then you should be playing according to USGA rules fully.

If score is never discussed, people can play how they want. One of my friends cheats like crazy but he still scores in tge 110's and he never says a peep about it. If he didnt cheat, it would take us all even longer.

Every time one of my golf buddies says: "Put me down for a 5" I say:

"Sure thing Judge Smails"

When I was younger, I used to take the "gimme" putts.  It wasn't until I was about 14 that I realized I was supposed to count those as another stroke.  It certainly had an effect on my overall score, but I can always say I "used" to shoot in the 80s.

P.S.  I suck.

I don’t play competitively anymore and I never play for money so it doesn’t really matter much to me.  I have an old buddy that I played high school golf with and whenever we play together we do compete so we both keep each other honest but it’s more for bragging rights than anything else.

I played in a 4 man scramble earlier this week.  There were no major prizes involved.  This was more of a drink and relax type corporate event.

Guy in the other cart was keeping score and I found out after he turned the card in he fudged it a bit.  Said he marked 2 birdies because we "should have made those putts."

I wouldn't have really cared cause we drank and had a good time, but we came in 2nd place...I've lost sleep over it.

If you are playing for something (doesn't matter how high the stakes are) you should call him on it....depending on what is considered cheating.  My group has an understanding because we aren't professional and want to keep pace of play that we will drop from OB and keep the distance (no use going back to the tee) and add the penalty or move out of a rocky place to save the clubs (no closer to the hole).

If you don't have those agreements and are playing for something then definitely call them on it.  If you aren't playing for anything then who cares what the other guy does.

Playing with friends/social playing - who cares.  I take lots of mulligans, chip 2 or 3 times if my shot goes wild, hit from the rough on OOB ball.  To me the point of golf is to have fun, try and get a little bit better, and not slow down the group.  If I'm shanking everything and wasting people's time having to 3 putt everything, I might as well put the clubs away and just be the cart driver.

If I'm playing with clients, then I play it straight and let them dictate whether we're going to fudge or not.  Some guys are serious about it and play to a T, so I do.  If they take mulligans or want to count a 6 foot gimme, I'll let them make that call first.

I ignore it in casual play, but I do find it annoying in a league match. It's not even the small amount of money we're playing for, it's just the principle of it. Drives me crazy when a guy who's been playing for 20+ years acts surprised when I tell him it's 2 a stroke penalty for hitting OB. Interestingly, I also play disc-golf and can't recall a single incident where I've seen someone purposely cheat. Not sure why its so prevalent in golf.

Tournament scramble cheaters are the worst. I quit playing the local ones because the same group won every year (and I knew they cheated and weren't good). The ring leader is a crooked-cop who is now spending 5-10 locked in the pokey up for stealing money from crime scenes. Karma.

Because the game is too ### #### hard for the average Joe.

Playing with buddies socially I could care less if they want to take mulligans or hit another drive if they go way OOB and crap like that. But at the same time I don't want to hear about your score afterwards.

Playing in a tourney or any kind of a league setting of course I am going to say something if somebody is cheating.

Rules are a little looser in disc golf but I agree that cheating is way less prevalent. Strange.

Isn't part of the game playing it how it lies?  For me it's not a real par or birdie if your improving your lie and you are only fooling yourself.  I don't see the point in not playing by the rules if you are not slowing people down.

This is no sheeeeeeit.

Going to a scramble and the winning score is -16 is a joke. One of my pet peeves.
-16 won't get you close to a win in any 4 man scramble I've ever played in, but I agree about tournament cheaters.  Most tourneys are for some cause or another and you don't even win enough to cover your drinks most of the time(in my experience anyway).  They're supposed to just be a fun group experience.
