Podunkers’ early rankings , tiering, with draft strategy comments
These are rankings are based on 2008 redraft leagues. They are PPR rankings, based on 12 team leagues, with serpentine drafts. I’ll talk about some draft strategy as I go through the rankings. I’ve never done this before so hope you enjoy it, and it can help someone out. Constructive criticism is welcome.
My general QB strategy during drafts is to get a good quality starter that I can ride through the season. I’ve tried the QBBC strategy and don’t like it. It leaves too much room for error on picking the right QB for which week. It never fails the one on my bench outscores the one I have starting. I usually have enough to worry about in getting the right WR3/RB3 flex player, I don’t want to add to my headache. In my mind this year there are eight rock solid week to week starters, and five serviceable starters.
Tier 1
Brady
Peyton
Romo
Brees
Usually these guys are too expensive for my taste. Unless it’s 6 pts for passing TD’s. If I was drafting at the 12, 13 turn I might consider Brady. I would also look at Romo or Brees 3rd 4th turn, because Palmer and Big Ben will be gone for sure by the time it gets back to you in the 5th 6th turn. However the guy I really want is in this second tier, and he will probably be there.
Tier 2
Palmer
Hasselbeck
Roethlisberger
The fifth round is when I start to look serious at my QB. Palmer and Big Ben have ADP’s in the 4th , so who knows if they will fall to the fifth. Hasselbeck is the guy I’m targeting this year in a lot of my drafts. He will be there in the fifth.
Tier 3
McNabb
Anderson
I have these two in a tier by themselves for a reason. They are both risky picks in my mind. McNabb is the last of the solid week to week starters in my book. He could easily out perform several of the guys I have ranked ahead of him. If Hasselbeck is taken, I will take McNabb and be very happy. Anderson is on my no draft list at his current adp in the fifth round. He starts my serviceable QB1 five. He will probably end up being a solid starter all year long, but I’m hinky about picking him with just one year of success. He has a ton of weapons on and improving team so what I’m really hoping that someone reaches for him and pushes back Hass or McNabb. Instead of taking him in the fifth, I would probably opt to wait and pick one of the other four serviceable QB1’s in tier 4.
Tier 4
Eli Manning
Cutler
Bulger
Leinart
Once again, let me reiterate, I WANT a QB in the top three tiers preferably. However, I would take Eli, Cutler, or Bulger in the 7th round if I failed to get someone out of my top three tiers. Last resort, I would take Leinart in round 9 or 10 and immediately follow him up with a tier five guy if possible. I am going to take some heat with this Leinart ranking, but that’s part of making your own rankings and the fun of fantasy football in general. I think he gets all the stats Warner had last year. I could easily see him getting 250-280 pts, which makes him a top 10 QB in most leagues. Finally, I WILL have someone from the above tiers as my starting QB!
Tier 5
Rivers
Delhomme
Campbell
Garrard
Not much to say here. Some owners will be taking these guys as their starters. Campbell is the one that interests me the most with the new west coast offense they will be running. If I take Leinart, I’ll be targeting Rivers, Delhomme, and Campbell in the next round.
Tier 6
Young
Rodgers
Alex Smith
Schaub
Kitna
Probaby going to take some heat on these also. I think Rodgers and Alex Smith are both primed to break out, with Rodgers having much more weapons at his disposal, he has the best shot. Martz made a No. 1 QB out of Kitna, I think he can do the same with Smith. He will easily have over 3000 yards passing and sneak into the top 15. Kitna had 4000+ both years under Martz. 3500+ yards for Smith is not out of the question. Everyone in this tier is going in round 10 or so. Smith’s adp is round 17, he is an absolute steal after round 15 in my book, and most likely will be my QB2 in a lot of leagues this year.
