Also, is it just me, or does finding a strong gym of your own color just suck?  I can take down pretty much any gym of another color, being allowed to take 6 guys to battle with me - but there is a local red gym that's level 9 right now.  It would take me an hour or better to battle it up to another level to get one of my guys in there as the lowest guy currently in there is around a 1900 Vap.
Yeah, this is difficult.  Last week, I stopped by a gym in my color and was in process of leveling it up to level 5.  Along comes someone else who is trying to take it over and is tearing it up.  So, there was no point at that point.  I just waited in my car for them to take it over, drop 2 guys in there and they drove off.  3 minutes later I took it back over, hit up a few more that were around and collected my coins.

Saw a Vaporeon in the wild yesterday on my sightings but never found it.

I think somebody else posted the math to get to level 40 previously but I did some calculating yesterday - based on my daily XP average since I started playing I would need over 3 years to get to level 40.  If I slow down and average 10k XP a day it will take 5.5 years.
Yep, I'm just about to hit the halfway point of level 26, which in total will be 1,000,000 in XP. Getting to level 30 requires a total of 2,000,000 in XP, So the amount of XP needed to go from level 1 to 30 is twice the XP needed to go from level 1 to halfway through level 26. So despite being in the middle of level 26 I'm only halfway to level 30. Level 40 requires 20,000,000 in XP, or ten times level 30. So I am 1/20th done getting to level 40, or 5% of the way there.

any rumors of trading in the works soon?  I'm holding onto lower level rare-ish ones that I could trade for ones that don't typically spawn in my area.  I mean I have 3 of those Voltorb things.
Some people parsing through the source code of the latest release have reported seeing for new objects that begin with "trade", like "trade_search", "trade_request", "trade_respones" and "trade_result". So there is evidence they are working on something.

Mid Lvl 28 right now (130K / 300K XP)

My top attacking squad:

Dragonite CP 2943 : Powered up to the max. I work by a ton of water spawn points so I've got pretty good access to Dratini's. They don't spawn often but I can catch at least 2 a day. This guy is a beast against any opponent. Can take down a CP2000+ Snorlax with ease.

Exeggutor CP 2474 : Powered up to the max. Evolved from a Exeggcute CP651 that I had hatched back in Lvl 24 or so. I have been powering him up ever since. He's my main attacker against the sea of Vaporeons that we see in gyms (Venusaur CP1803 would be his backup). His Hyper Beam is devastating.

Arcanine CP 2283 : Powered up a bit. Currently stranded at a gym but is my main attacker against Exeggutors.

Vaporeon CP 2120 : Powered up a bit but I believe it was a waste of stardust. At this level, I often run into 700+ Eevees that could come close to matching his CP when evolved. He is the main attacker against any Fire type. Water Gun/Hydro Pump cuts right through them.

Gyarados CP 2119 : Powered up a bit. Again, tons of water spawn points around my office so can farm them easily. Great attacker vs. most opponents.

Last but not least

Wiggilytuff CP 1450 : Powered up a bit. Excellent attacker against Snorlax. With well timed Dodging, he can bring a good fight to a 2000 CP opponent.

There are rumours about a buddy system apparently in the works. Changes to the game code in the last update have people talking. The thought is you will be able select a pokemon to travel with you and it will award "buddy candies" based on distance travelled. Making candies for rare pokemon much more accessible
I like the idea. I want to take a stroll with Gengar, just cause he cool as chit.

Popped a lucky egg yesterday and evolved a boatload of pidgeys and a number of new evolutions (which I think get 2000xp) and hit level 22.  I feel like I pulled over 50k xp from my session.  Top pokemon for me now are:

Arcanine CP1948

Arcanine CP1889

Vaporeon CP1871

Arcanine CP1704

Exeggutor CP1577

Golem CP1510

Have a long way to go before I reach where some of you are.  I simply never find half the pokemon I see at the top of most of your lists.  I catch Growlithes for days though (have another 79 candies for when I catch a strong one)

I get 10km eggs so infrequently and the last two have been Pinsers.  Pretty over the game at this point.  Halfway through level 26.  If the eggs we're so bad, I'd probably buy more incubators to try and add to the pokedex.  Too much of a grind.

My 10k eggs from memory: hitmonchan, eevee, lapras, electrabuz, eevee, hitmonchan, dratini, hitmonchan, electrabuz, eevee.

Lots of repeats and nothing too exciting apart from the lapras.

I have seen/caught exactly one Pinsir. He is 915CP and is an absolute badass in battle. I would love to be able to power him up but I have zero candy for him.

I am really just grinding at this point. Nothing exciting has been caught in awhile. I have hatched some 5k eggs with little results. I just am so tired of catching Magnemites, Meowiths and all the birds.

I think at last look I have caught 100 mags and evolved two up to some decent Magnetons but I have like 190 candy still for them that I can't do anything with but evolve more low level Magnetons. The  numbers are the same for the Meowiths--probably close to 200 candy for them and I have already evolved one decent Perisian. So I guess I will just evolve a bunch of the low levels ones to XP build.

I'm nearly through level 26 and just hatched my 2nd 10K egg.... a 600cp Eevee.

:wall:

Egg incubators are one of the few things I actually spent the coins on.  No incentive to pay for them with such ####ty results

Hopefully Niantic realizes this and starts putting more rare and higher level pokes in eggs. Maybe even evolved forms in them.

Finally got a great pokemon from a 10k egg: 1629cp lapras. Got a decent amount of candy to power him up too.

Yeah I still see a whole ton of people playing. And with the kids going back to school just recently, that has really fired up interest at least around here.

The main issue in my mind was the way they wanted people to play vs the way people actually wanted to play.

In my house, it was super exciting to check pokevision and run out and try to track down x. We have no interest in walking around aimlessly hoping to stumble onto something. Different strokes since we know that is what Colin and his son like to do and that is cool.

My son now likes pokemon so that is great. He looks every so often and has asked to go out this weekend and try to play. We will, but the excitement is gone.

Add in the fact that I dont have any pokes close to the ones you guys have listed and playing in gyms is a far stretch.

Had they kept pokevision around, I can see this still going strong. Probably waning but still strong. Or even, like others have suggested, fix the tracking thing.

My 2 cents fwiw

Update on catch tracking study from first 100 encounters at my desk at work over last 2 days

Ongoing Spreadsheet
Eventually the plan is to compile/analyze the data a bit... maybe at 500 encounter mark next week or something.

This only includes catches while sitting at my desk (where can be easily entered)

I'm most excited to play this when I'm out of town. There are more new pokemon and I'd be walking more for hatching eggs. But I can go for days not opening the app when I'm just going to work and home.

Damn - nice work nerd. ;)

Went to a local park/river yesterday.  Within 2 minutes I had caught two 1100+CP Pinsirs.  However, I almost never see:  Growlithes, Dratinis, Exeggucutes,  So most of the guys everyone else has as high CP I don't ever get.  And I've only gotten two 10k eggs which I had been saving.  Guess it may be about time to incubate them.  I'm almost to level 23 and whlie I have a ton of 1000-1200 CP Pokemons, I only have one over 1200.     :kicksrock:

Went to a friend's house with the wife after work...we park and start walking towards the house and pull up our sightings list for fun.  HFS it's a Dragonite.  We speed walk past the house we were going to and start hunting.  Get to the T at the end of the block; wife goes left, I go right.  I'm still in my work clothes, but I'm breaking into a light jog.  I get to the next cross street and get a text from my wife that it disappeared from her sightings, but it's still on mine so I know it's close.  Due to the distance it has been on my sightings list, I make a snap decision and turn right onto the street that parallels the one we had originally walked down.  It's a steep hill, but I'm keeping up my jog/half sprinting pace.

About halfway up the hill, I feel a vibration and, can it be?  There he is!  I lock onto him and hurry out and pull out my work phone, log myself out and log my wife in, and lock on to it for her as well.  I walk back down the hill when a car pulls up and rolls down the window.  I'm assuming he's going to ask me about the Dragonite, but it turns out he is a co-worker who happens to live in the same area and saw me running up the hill.  I tell him we're meeting some friends and I got turned around and I'm running late, all the while holding the two phones in my hand trying to act cool.  He asks the address and tells me I'm only a block away and do I want a ride because I look like I'm out of breath.  I politely decline and he drives on, and I walk the rest of the way to my wife.  I hand her the phone and we both get down to business!

We check the CPs of the Dragonite for the first time -- mine is a 2252!  Huge!  Hers is only in the 1600s despite the fact that she is only one level lower than me, but it is still a strong Dragonite!  I drop a raspberry and throw the first Ultra Ball -- it hits, but no throw bonus.  The ball shakes a few times and it breaks out!  Lucky her, my wife catches hers on the first try.  Undaunted, I drop another raspberry and go with another curveball -- this time it's a direct hit, with a Great Throw bonus.  My heart is pounding as the ball shakes once, twice, and then three times, then locks!  Got it!  Overall it's 80% IV and good moveset, so I'm pretty happy!

We finally make it to our friend's house, who as it turns out had seen us pull up and were wondering what was taking us so long and why I am dripping with sweat.  We tried to explain, but I don't think they got it.  Anyway, it was probably one of our best Pokemon Go stories so far!  Just remember that Dragonite is just around the corner -- and always check your sightings when you drive somewhere new!

 Been there for a snorlax with the GF. Absolutely ridiculous but it really is a ####load of fun when stuff like that happens.

Can't wait for trading to open up.  I've been trading in 1200 CP Pinsers for a week or two now.

When the trading feature goes live, what do you guys think will be the best way for Niantic to do it?

Bluetooth transfers? where you have to be within a certain distance?
Friend list where you can transfer across the world? I think this would make filling out a pokedex too easy.

Can someone explain the IV thing?
One 600cp Eevee is not the same as another 600cp Eevee. One 1000cp Snorlax is not the same as another 1000cp Snorlax. Not only do they have unique movesets, but they also have unique individual values (IVs).

The app shows the difference in movesets, but it hides the IVs.The IVs however can be seen through the API. Each pokemon has a unique value between 1 and 15 for attack, for defense and for stamina.

A recent update to the app gives some generic info on the IV through the "Appraise" feature. A little helpful, but a long way off from the app actually showing us the exact IVs. It's clear Niantic wants a decent level of "unknown" about each pokemon.

Google "Poke Assistant" and you'll find an IV calculator. This will give you a list of possible IV combinations your pokemon could have. Some have found that learning a little more about the words used in the "Appraise" feature can help reduce the possible combinations from Poke Assistant's IV calculator, possibly eliminating all the possibilities except one, leaving you with the knowledge of the exact IVs for your pokemon.

I think it'd be cool if they let you select like 5 pokemon, and as long as you leave your GPS on you get a text when you're within 200m of one of those pokes.

Need more epic spontaneous hunts.

I'd like to point out that the game isn't named Pokemon Sit Around Until Something You Need Is Nearby and Then We'll Send You Right to It

From Reddit:

So the buddy:

  • Does provide in game rewards like candies
  • Can be switched at any time
  • Appears next to your avatar on the trainer screen
  • DOES NOT APPEAR ON THE MAP SCREEN, the buddy's face shows up in a bubble next to player portrait.
You win some, you lose some.
