Portis Downgraded to Doubtful (1 Viewer)

FWIW, Portis was joking with reporters about this in an interview I just heard. Effectively said it was news to him, that he thought it would be a gametime decision. Said he'd have to go out and do some push-ups and some pull-ups to show Coach what he was working with. He said all of this while kinda chuckling.
He said similar things last week. He said something about the coaches wanting to see him bench 280, "but I told them I've never benched that much in my life, so we'll see."
Again, there is either a major miscommunication between Portis and Gibbs, or they're in cahoots in one of the better-executed misinformation campaigns of recent times.
Gibbs = Communication

OMG.

Can you say this is total crap. I know what Gibbs said.

I am starting Portis and he will play a ton. If not then I am wrong, but I am not falling for this chess game betwen he and Parcells. They are both in must win games already. 0-2 is not how you want to start. And the Skins have no chance....none without Portis playing and playing well.

Transcript from the Joe Gibbs interview on redskins.com for those of you without audio:

GIBBS: "Probably what everyone will ask about is Clinton. He didn't practice today, so we'll probably downgrade him. Really it's just because of soreness... he hasn't been able to get the soreness out. And actually it's in a different spot in the shoulder. So I think it's just an issue there where he's got some soreness there that lingered and kept him from practicing this week so we'll go ahead and downgrade him."

REPORTER: Asks question.

GIBBS: "Well, I think... you know... if a guy doesn't practice, he's not gonna play, so we'll downgrade him. I would say that he'll probably tell me he can play on game day, but you know, he didn't practice, so we'll move him down accordingly."
Translation - The NFL tells us to downgrade guys when they don't practice so I will, but when Portis tells me on Sunday that he can play I will start him.
Ding Ding Ding we have a winner
That[s what I was thinking. He didn't practice last week, either, did he?
Most reports last week were that he practiced but did not participate in full drills. This week sounds like he's not practicing at all.

At least they don't play Monday night again. While it is a Sunday night game, hopefully we'll have the definitive answer by 1 PM Sunday.

Seems to me last week when Gibbs said this, this is what happened.

RB Portis Will Play As Backup?

Joseph White, Associated Press via Baltimore Sun - [Full Article]

Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs made a suprising announcement on Saturday, stating that injured runningback Clinton Portis will play as a backup in Monday night's game against the Minnesota Vikings. "If I had to say, I think Ladell will start and Clinton will play a backup role in the game," Gibbs said. "That's the way I think it's going to go. I think that's what we've tried to accurately portray during the week." After proclaiming to the media that he was only "75 percent" a day earier, Portis changed his tune on Saturday. "I'm about 93.9 right now," Portis said. "I've still got two more days to get to 100 percent. ... At the rate things have been increasing, it looks pretty good
Now why doesn't anyone want to listen to Gibbs this week?

Gibbs: "Some soreness kept him from practicing this week, so we'll downgrade him [Portis]...If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play. So, we'll downgrade him...I think he'll probably tell me he can play on gameday, but he didn't practice so we'll move him down a quarter [on the injury report]...Hopefully he should be back next week. That would be my hope."
No way in He*LL Gibby benches his STUD RB in a game that the Skins need.
If he won't play if he doesn't practice, and he didn't practice, then why not downgrade him to OUT?

This is fluff.

in the video Gibbs clearly states he is only moving him down to doubtgul due to the fact that he hasn't practiced BUT HE IS SURE CLINTON WILL TELL HIM HE CAN PLAY ON GAMEDAY. Last week he let Portis make the call, this week he's not? please.

The reporter ASSUMED that Portis was out, and began directing his questions that direction to "scoop". I specifically heard Gibbs say at one point when ANY player is out you have to compensate (as an answer to a reporters question) and the reporter ran with it giving a list of RBs that would be available for the game. Gibbs just agreed, never said that Portis wasn't going to be there too though.

It is total fluff.

You must have missed the part where Gibbs stated who his RB group was going to consist of.

Honestly...you need to be able to read betwen the lines on this.Portis is playing and playing a lot. If you don't think so and you own him, then don't start him

Portis owner in one of my leagues. I say that, as Moleculo brought up an excellent point in another thread yesterday about the biased opinions within these threads. I'm gonna try and not be a homer here.

1. The Skins need to win this game desperately...going 0-2 in this division may be too big a hole...if Philly wins on Sunday they are going tob e ahead a full 2 games on some of these guys. The Skins were completely flat when they played on MNF...just like the preseason or most of it.

2. Portis brings that "it" factor. Even is they see that Portis is less than 100%...75%...you gotta put him in there if nothing mroe than a decoy of sorts. The Skins hae weapons, lots of them at WR/TE but if there is no runnng game then Dallas is going to tee off.

3. The real question is how many carries will Portis get? I would bet he actually will carry the ball 10-15 times in the game with Betts rolling in and out of the game.

The Skins-Cowboys rivalry goes way back...you can be sure if Gibbs can mess around with who might be starting back there he will.

As a Portis owner I will probably bench him again this week and look for points from other palces on my roster. Hopefully you play in a league where you can hide Portis thru a flex or you have a decent RB2 and RB3...but I wouldn't insert Portis into the line up if he left as doubtful. Sunday morning will be the tell all, b4 that is mostly MM on the majority of those posting.

Hmmm. This is going to cause the McNabb owner in my league to probably decline my Portis offer. I'm just saying...:)Anyway, wow. What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is going on here? Who is the back to have if Portis is out, Betts or Duckett?
Betts should see the majority of the carries but TJ will get the goal line touches.Like FWP and Bettis last year22 carries, 100 yards, 0 td3 carries, 1 yards 2 td.
Umm. I'm guessing you gotta give TJ at least two yards to score two TD's. You gotta move forward to score.Willie
Not that it's important to the thread, but:Carry #1: 1 yd. TDCarry #2: 1yd. TDCarry #3: -1 yd.3 carries, 1 yard, 2 TD's

:goodposting: 10-15 carries would be my guess as well.I see this game similar to the Cowboys-Redskins Monday night game from last year whether Portis plays or not. Low scoring, with the game hinging on which team can make the big play.

It's all well and good to SAY he's gonna play, but when it comes down to it if you own him are YOU going to start him?

I got him in one league - no way he starts for me if he's listed as doubtful. I'd rather put in Droughns honestly, even though I'm not expecting much. And I certainly don't feel like playing mind reader here.

Gibbs = Communication Bill Belichick
Fixed.... :)
I don't get it.
He's about as useful in figuring out whether a dinged up player will start as Belichick. Neither one plays straight, it seems.Thats all.
FWIW, here are the fantasy starter injury stats from last year for Washington:
Code:
Listing Instances Played Pct League PctDoubtful 2 0 0% 5%Questionable 5 0 0% 50%Probable 15 13 87% 89%
At least based upon last season, it doesn't seem like Gibbs plays games.

Hey DD, with what I just read on the AP...and now ESPN is of course leading the way he is OUT this weekend...i think I might reverse what i wrote...but I still am not gonna touch him this week.ESPN will probably announce the Portis retirement press conference by the end of the day.

:lmao: I saw that, too. One point to make here is that Gibbs never said they were downgrading him to "doubtful," just that they were downgrading him. If he was on my fantasy team there's no way I would have him in my lineup with the game Sunday night unless I had no other viable options.

I'd be interested to know if any of the people saying Portis will play are either a) Portis owners or b) Redskin fans.
I'm neither
 why would anyone else care - unless you're playing against him this week?
Because people can be biased in their opinions on their player based on whether you own a guy on your fantasy team or are a fan of that player's NFL team. A guy who owns Portis or is a Redskins fan will tend to be more optimistic that he plays than someone who is not. Not saying every Portis owner or Redskin fan would be more optimistic, just in general.

More Portis brilliance:

"Official? Ain't nothing official. When you marry a woman, you're supposed to be with her for the rest of your life, right? I sure see a lot of divorces!" (chuckles, reporters laugh)

He also said since he ate gunpowder twice a day now he should be fine.
