Clinton Portis, RB WAS

News: Washington starting RB Clinton Portis (hip) did not practice on Wednesday and is considered questionable for Week 8 in Detroit. Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said Clinton Portis required treatment on a shin, an ankle and the neck as well as the sore hip flexor that caused the league's leading rusher to miss two practices last week. Portis might have to miss more practice time in order to play in next week's game against Detroit. "He's carrying a big load, so he may need a little bit of a rest," Zorn said. "I'm willing to give it to him, that's for sure."

Analysis: Portis rushed for 175 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown and a fumble for his fourth consecutive 100-yard game. He has 818 yards rushing only seven games into the season and has seven touchdowns. He's one of the best RBs in the NFL right now and a must-start at all times. That goes double with the Redskins playing lowly Detroit in Week 8.

This is one of those games where I want to start Portis but feel Zorn may rest him earlier than my Fantasy team would like. Especially if they get an early lead. I may start Chris Johnson over Portis

Portis was questionable last week and practiced very little. He did fine against the Browns. He'll do fine against the Lions.

Portis (and others) good to go for Sunday.

Zorn: Most of the Injured Players Will Play Sunday

Besides saying that a decision is likely this week on whether to place WR Malcolm Kelly on the injured-reserve list, Jim Zorn said he expects most of his injured players to play Sunday. RB Ladell Betts and CB Shawn Springs are not likely to play, and Zorn said he still may decide to hold DT Cornelius Griffin out to rest his injured shoulder.

Everybody else looks good to go.

With Betts out who could run for the skins if not Portis? I mean I know he will play but who comes in to give him a blow?

If Betts were available, then they may just rest him vs. the Lions. But I haven't seen enough from Alexander to believe that he could fill in. I don't see Cartright being the man either. I'll bet the Redskins wish they had kept Mason about now -- that guy had a lot of talent. My bet is that Portis will play and still get lots of carries...but maybe Zorn and co. know something about Alexander the rest of us don't...

Cartwright has been an effective runner when given the carries, his sole problem being fumbles. I could easily envision this game being a blowout and Zorn deciding to split 15 carries between Cartwright and Alexander as he rests Portis.

honestly it's the Lions. I could see alexander getting more points this week, especially if it's an early blowout. Scares me a little as this would be the easiest place to 'safely" rest Portis for a week, considering how awful the lions are.

The danger here isn't that Portis won't play. I am sure that he will play. The danger is that he will be taken out very early if they jump off to a big lead against the Lions. Good time to warm up Alexander and rest Portis.

This is exactly what I am worried about! I know if I'm Zorn no way am I risking my star back vs. these Lions but having said that they did lose to STL so anything can happen.

Unless the running game is not clicking, they won't take him out before he has 100 yards. If it's a blowout, he's not going to get 180 yards or some number like that though, unless he rips off some long runs early.

How are the Skins going to blow out the Lions if Portis hasn't scored two touchdowns? Campbell has been solid but he doesn't throw for many scores. Could he against the absymal Detroit secondary? Sure, but I really don't think it's that likely. The only way Portis is taken out early is if he's already had a huge game, IMO.

:lmao: Let's also not forget that the Redskins haven't blown out anyone yet. They haven't quite shown that ability. Of course, they could possibly be facing a whole new level of suck this week, so this could be the week. But, as you say, IF the Redskins blowout the Lions, Portis will likely have a good game (100+ and 2 TDs) even if it's in limited time.

Let's just say I like this matchup.

I don't think that they really need to be blowing them out, by normal standards. If Portis is banged up, and they are up by two scores... does it really hurt your team against the Lions to throw Alexander in there? Hell, Alexander will probably have just as easy a time running on them. That's the point. It isn't as if SA is the kind of running back that can only be thrown into a game against an awful team when up by 30 points.Also... I actually see Campbell having a pretty big game. It will be obvious that the Lions will key on Portis. With their struggles to stop the run, they will have to put more men in the box, and that will really open up that West Coast Offense.

Guys... you are acting like the Redskins are worried about how many yards and fantasy points Portis gets this week. The man has been too banged up to practice, so if they get an opportunity to rest him in the game, they will. They need him down the stretch, not against the Lions. Like I said... I am not saying that he won't play, but if he is that banged up... and they are in control, don't be amazed when they decide to throw Alexander in there. They are looking to win games, make the playoffs and take a run for the Super Bowl, not run up Portis' stats while he is hurting and expose him to even more hits.

It doesn't do Portis or the Redskins any good if they have the game in hand, and are still running a banged up Portis into the ground.

Cartwright and Alexander
I actually see Carwight being a nice sleeper this week. The skins should be up by 28+ points by mid-third quarter, I see CP heading to the bench and let Carwright finish.

I have no doubt that CP is going to play. And you're right. they will need him. They are only putting up 20 per game. Granted this is Detroit though and we could see more of the passing game. I wouldn't expect 30 carries, but I think right at 20 is reasonable. He hasn't had less that 20 all year. They are going to need him healthy if they plan on making a run. I still think he'll put up decent numbers. 15-20 carries 100 yds and at least one score.
