$14 for 18 wings at our neighborhood bar yesterday.  They do a great job though, although I wasn't eating any. My son and his buddies got three orders!

This one's for you, cream cheese fans...

How a Cream Cheese Shortage Is Affecting N.Y.C. Bagel Shops

I can't read it, but found a synapsis:

There’s a cream cheese crisis -- and bagel shop owners are panicking

Supply chain issues have claimed a new victim -- breakfast.

Bagel shop owners from New York City to the Carolinas are struggling to find cream cheese and fear the supply shortage could continue leaving bagels high and dry, per The New York Times.

So where’s the schmear?

Many bagel shops use Kraft Heinz’s Philadelphia Cream Cheese as a base for their own in-shop flavors, ordering supply in bulk that gets delivered on massive pallets.

Kraft has experienced a spike in demand, resulting in a 35% jump in what they’ve shipped to customers this year -- diminishing the company’s inventory and leading to empty pallets.

But it’s not just Kraft -- shop owners report struggles with other suppliers, caused by a flurry of shortages, including:

  • Labor shortages at factories
  • The national truck driver shortage
  • A shortage of packaging supplies
So what’s a shop owner to do?

The raw cream cheese that bagel shop owners purchase is unwhipped and unprocessed, which means they can’t just raid the shelves of local grocery stores.

While some shop owners make do with lighter orders or lower-quality products, others have considered raising prices, temporarily removing less popular flavors, and putting limits on orders.

Some New Yorkers have even gone as far as making the trek to *gasp* -- New Jersey -- to replenish their stash.

Bagels are only the beginning

While bagel shops are feeling the shortage most acutely, many bakeries use cream cheese for cheesecakes and other holiday-themed desserts.

Given the uncertainty of supply going forward, it might make sense to stock up now -- lest you end up with dry bagels for New Year’s brunch.

I usually just get butter on my bagels because of how excessively they slather the cream cheese on
Haven’t been to bagel places as much lately since I don’t travel at all for work now and there are a couple decent ones in the local airport. I usually get butter as well, kind of prefer it on Asiago or plain but they never got it right. It was either like cream cheese and you are wiping off the excess or you ask for butter on the side (easy to see what they do while paying). Butter always seems so easy. Just make sure you cover the entire bagel face and there shouldn’t be “extra” so no idea why it’s so hard. Easy situation to rectify but always amazed me how few times they’d get it right. Best case always seemed to be too much on one half and a couple smooshes fixed it with an even coating.

For those cat people Friskies is having a brand shortage on certain flavors of canned cat food.

Also like people said there's shortages of drivers but also people to unload nd work warehouses. Either they quitter better jobs, CDC distancing guidelines depending on their work situation, shorthanded do to illness/deaths and not being able to properly replace people.

There's also some droughts among unseasonable weather that's causing produce shortages (As someone who works in Produce I can attest to this).

Hopefully people are almost finished their holiday shopping and didn't start it now or purchased items from overseas like Japan/China etc part of the world. Was told weeks ago by my neighbor who works UPS at PhL INTER NTL that if you wait for shipping on stuff in those areas till after Thanksgiving you won't get those items in time for the holiday season.

Best advice I can give as a retail worker is if we are out of stuff don't take it out on the store or an employee. Not really their fault. Also don't be an ##### and buy up the whole isle of big ticket items that are short. Stock up on what you need don't go overboard as you inconvenience others. Most places won't have an answer to the problem besides a generic as we don't know whats going on most times either. Best bet is if you know which company it is that makes it reach out to them.

I think things will finally catch up this spring, mainly because people will cut back on spending.

When I went to my local Shoprite in South Jersey on Friday morning, they had plenty of the cream cheese we use -- reduced fat Philly in the bars (as opposed to the tubs).

So this is nothing like last year's quest for the only kind of Mac and Cheese my son will eat, Kraft Three Cheese with pasta shaped like shells. It went missing for months.

When it comes to underrated pasta shapes, #1 on my list is pasta shaped like shells.

Gatorade seems to be scarce in my part of the Tampa area. I don’t drink it, but noticed the large shelf hole where they should be the other morning.

Just bought two bags. Still no Steak-Umms, though.

:(

I too was once in love with the Steak-um.  Sure, it was rather cheap meat but so easy to make and under the right *um* circumstances was especially delicious.

Get some 1/8" sliced roast beef from the deli counter.  Really any will do but the stuff that isn't processed is best.  Of course you pay for that but it's one of the few things I treat myself to these days.

God speed my friend.

Meat sheets!  :hifive:

Not the same. I want all the preservatives and childhood memories that come with the Meat Sheets. Nothing like frying them up and watching them bubble away.

My 17-year-old is hooked on them too. I consider that to be my greatest parenting achievement. My legacy, perhaps.
I grew up in Philly so I appreciate the irony of loving these as a kid.

I do want some for nostalgia sake but I feel like I would need a whole box for a decent sandwich

Any half decent grocery store butcher shop will shave you guys some beef
A few local stores have prepackaged shaved ribeye in the meat area, have also seen it frozen.  It’s really good though
