THE BAD NEWS is that the season for my favorite teams is over. I grew up a Cowboy fan, I'm talking a "1-15 but at least we beat the Redskins" kind of Cowboy fan. Then after living a few years with the Seattle rain getting in my head, it was on Dec. 6, 2004 when the Cowboys beat the Seahawks that I realized the truth in my heart - I wanted the Seahawks to win. And I was hones with myself just in time to not be a bandwagon fan for the 05 season.
So with the Hawk loss yesterday, I found solace in the Cowboys presence as I could revert to my childhood team, but that was short lived.
My favorite team by marriage, the Browns have improved greatly but just short of being a playoff (but admittedly almost more deserving that the Seahawks were). Despite my faves being eliminated, there is THE GOOD NEWS...
We are guaranteed a great Super Bowl XLII storyline during the 2 week break for media saturation and overkill. Regardless of your favorite team, which Super Bowl plot do you think would be the best?
Plot 1: Classic Good vs. Evil
Green Bay Packers vs. New England Patriots
This storyline is obvious. The Brady led cheating, bullying, cocky, arrogant New England Patriots vs. the Favre led hard working, team centered, get'er done somehow (but get'er done honest) Green Bay Packers.
Sub plots include Season QB records vs. Career QB records, Super Bowl XXXI rematch and roster comparisons, and of course the '72 Dolphins potential public endorsement of Favre for President.
Plot 2: Grasping for New Glory
New England Patriots vs. New York Giants
In the first ever Super Bowl meeting between teams that both begin with NEW, the Patriots seek to be the first ever historic 19-0 undefeated team while Peyton Manning's little brother seeks a glorious prison break from the shadows by leading his team to a shocking upset over what would have been the greatest team in the history of the NFL becoming known now. Sub plots:
1) MVP Discussions - Brady attempts to become first ever player to get 3rd Super Bowl MVP as Eli Manning attempts to become first brother a year after Peyton but in a bold move requests that he now be know only by his first name ELI.
2)Old York and Old England - in the UK the Ceremonial Leaders the Sheriff of York (Yorkshire) and the Queen of England make a little side bet on the game.
Plot 3: Eli Manning Grudge Match
For two weeks we see every possible comparison of Eli Manning's stats with SD QB stats ever since the 2004 draft. We will be sick of seeing the photo of Eli's pouty face holding a Chargers jersey. If the Giants were to win, San Diego fans may actually attempt to burn down Eli's place.
Sub plot: Wild Card dreams do come true. A history of wild card teams that have won the Super Bowl.
Plot 4: The Warm Fuzzy Super Bowl
Everybody wins in this emotional celebration of tears shed and dreams realized. If Favre moving from the verge of retirement to father figure of this young over achieving team that defies isn't enough to cause your eyes to moisten, then certainly the story of the community service and bonding of the San Diego team & community during the wild fires that sparked the Chargers to be a winning team definitely will turn on the tears.
Sub plots headlines read:
"Chargers feel like home team after practicing in Arizona earlier this season."
"Packers at home in weather extremes? Differences between the tundra & the desert."
"LT best running back in league gets first shot at the big one"
So which plot do you like best? Vote now!
