I have nothing to say about the game but I want to ##### a little. I set my day around this game. It is in the AZ daily star as being on fox sports az at 1:00. I got up early did my yard work. Yard work by the way was very tuff at it is really hot and humid here. I really busted my ###. I get in take a shower, crack a beer, sit down, turn on the tv and what is on? A highschool baseball game :hot: I then start flipping cahannels and I get to the NFL network and according to the guide it says it will be showing the game. So I calm down and wait for kickoff. You want to know what happened at 1:00? The ####### channel goes black with a message that we are blocked from seeing the game.#### phoenix and #### the cardinals. I am pist :hot: :hot: :hot:
That's what is called network blackout. When attendance at the event falls below a certain level it will not be covered on any television network.
The announcers said it was a SELL OUT

It doesn't look sold out.

I know this is the first preseason game, but the loss of free safety Chris Hope is going to affect the Steelers secondary in a big way...Polamalu blitzed on the TD by Johnson, and the strong safty was no where near the play. I think it was Clarke.

The chemistry between Hope and Troy Polamalu is going to be tough to replace or emulate.

Pleanty of TC left, though.

It should be interesting to see what happens with the rest of TC nad preseason

anyone know who started at the LB spots for the Cardinals?
See above.
Starting LBs were Huff, Darling and Pace. I know Dansby has a phantom injury, but thought Hayes would start in the middle.
wow so Darling really is the MLB like Ourlads has listed...
For my money Gerald Hayes will be your starter sooner rather than later. He has looked quite good playing with the 2nd string.

Another pick by Anthony Smith. Wow -- great first action for the rookie.
Smith has been a camp standout. It is nice to see him carrying that through to the first pre-season game. Cowher said that it is very rare for a safety to start on this defense (Polamamlu didn't even start), but, Smith appears to be a ball-hawk, and he and Troy could be a great combination in the near future.Santonio Holmes has looked solid today as well. I'm surprised we've seen so much of Boyd rather than Omar Jacobs.

I was thinking the same thing -- surprised Boyd is still in there. I also was surprised they didn't give Haynes more plays in the pro-set on the last drive. Humes was in there earlier on this drive.

Haynes will win the backup RB job, and Staley will eventually be released, imho. As for Boyd over Jacobs, word out of camp is that Jacobs is really struggling to pick-up the offense.

Speaking of Boyd, it's a shame this isn't MLB. He's got a helluva fastball and not much else. Mike Vick puts more air and "touch" on his throws than this guy. Lots of ring generalship though..

McCown was at least serviceable, this Navarre dude looks brutal. I doubt even if Lienhart signs soon, he'd do much as a first year pro replacing a hurt Warner. This has got to be a concern for those taking Fitz and Boldin high. IF Warner plays all year, those guys will be gold, but how much of a hit do they take with either Navarre or Leinart as their QB? I can't see Warner lasting all year, not with that line.

excellent point . . . Warner is bound to get hurt, and the two Wrs kept the pace with McCown . . . McCown is a medicore NFL QB, but last year he was a pretty good fantasy QB . . .

Did that old woman try to flash her **** to the camera in that last scan of the stands?

I know it is stating the obvious BUT, They need to get Leinart signed ASAP. If he had a whole TC he probably could have pushed Warner for the starting gig, but at least if he gets signed soon he'll be better than Navarre. Leinart is as polished as a QB can be coming out of college, so his learning curve should not be too harsh in that offense.

Do you always overreact like this during the preseason? Especially over ONE play?

Nope. I used one play as an example of the only question in the Steeler's defense: the strong safety position.Would you feel better if I removed the statements about plenty of TC left and how interesting the developments over the rest of the preseason will be?

Nah, just get rid of your "is going to " and "in a big way" reference. That is over the top. As a Steeler fan, I'm not much concerned.

Yeah, there's really no reason why any Steeler fan should be concerned about the defense and no real reason that a Cardinal fan should be overly excited..

I mean, I'm not ruling out the possibilities that the Steelers' defense could decline or that the Cards' offense will be amazing, but c'mon, it's a preseason game. The first one, at that.

If there's anything we should have learned in years past about the preseason, it's that it literally means 100% pure nothing in determining a team's performance for the regular season. Every single year there are like 10 teams that look great in the preseason and are mediocre to just bad in the regular season. And there are a bunch of teams that look terrible in the preseason that look great in the regular season.

The most recent example, of course, is Pittsburgh. In the 2005 preseason they looked like a 6-10 team. The offense couldn't do a thing and the defense was just average instead of elite. And then they won the Superbowl.

I'll one up that example w/ Indy last year. IIRC they were winless in the preseason... 13-0 or something like that. Pitt's D never looks special in preseason. They make all the vanilla calls now, and get after it in week 1. Much like about 20 or so other NFL teams.

Did anyone see much of Humes? If so, did he make Staley look expendable? Sounds like Staley did enough of that himself.

Humes actually looked pretty good -- he caught a swing-screen pass that went for probably 30 yards and down by the goalline, his footwork looked pretty good. He was doing pretty well until he fumbled the ball when they were trying to punch it in from the 2. But overall, he looked better than I expected.Staley did not look good at all. The Cardinals were getting good pressure from the ends and Duce didn't outrun anyone. However, given the defensive looks, it's the type of situation where I wouldn't expect Staley to shine. Parker was able to cut to the outside so he looked pretty good.Edited to add: I also expected to see Haynes more as the RB in two-back sets. But they only gave him one series in the early third quarter, so he didn't get as many looks as I would have thought.

Actually, Deshea Townsend had coverage and he and Tyrone Carter ran into each other.

I TiVO'd the game, but haven't had a chance to look at it again...yet. As my typos might suggest, my pathetic analysis was rushed, and I want to see that play again. I thoroughly realize the defense is going to be "vanilla" throughout preseason, but I can't wait to see how Carter, Clark, and Smith play in the strong safety position.

I can see what you're saying, and I rushed that post. But you have to admit, the only question on the Steelers' defense is the strong safety position. How about Anthony Smith? Cowher said of him, "Anthony Smith is a good football payer. He's a very natural safety and he's the one kid that showed up today."

Smith looked good, no doubt about it. Both of his interceptions were on lollipop throws and he had to go up to snag them. What was also interesting was the fact that he made both picks in practically full stride, like he was able to read the play well in advance and get in position early. I love the fact that even as a raw rookie he was in position to make those plays.

Smith is a keeper. Seeing these guys in action, looks like it was a very good draft.

:banned: Here's to signing Kevin Colbert through the 2010 season!

Definitely. Smith was very good. Philip got a lot of time and looked better than I expected. Reid played really well too -- I only remember him dropping one catchable ball. Holmes was solid and Omar Jacobs played better than I figured he would. Humes was middle of the road -- he was on a roll but then he fumbled on the goal line.It looks like the TE3 position may be a dogfight -- Dekker made a couple of mistakes yesterday. I don't remember seeing Charles Davis at all. But what a catch by Smolko at the end. I think we can only keep one of those guys so every play will need to count for them.

I thought Dekker looked really bad. Made a few mistakes and dropped a ball right in his hands. It is still early but I really liked the catch by Smolko. But lets not kid ourselves, the job is going to the better blocker.
