***Pre-Game Thread*** Green Bay at Atlanta (1 Viewer)

Game I am most looking forward to. Packers look really good, but the Falcolns will be a tough out at home.

I think there will be more pressure on Rodgers in this one as Starks shouldn't have the same running room.

Really excited to see how Atlanta performs on the big stage.

I see the Packers throwing all day as it worked last time. I see Atlanta running all day with a heavy dose of Gonzalez over the middle. Prediction: Atlanta 28 Packers 27.

We did beat them earlier at home, but I'll tell you, I'm going to stress out all week worried about it.

I almost would have rather faced New Orleans for a 3rd time then the red hot Packers. This will be tough, hopefully we can pressure Rodgers a bit more this time around and force him into some poor throws.

I also feel this is the defacto championship game, no offense Bears fans.

Atlanta is great at home so it's scary. I don't see another 110 yard, 1 TD game for Turner again though. I'm guessing the Pack is going to make Ryan beat them. Tramon will be glued to Roddy White. Woodson will be blitzing......a lot.

Such a tough game.

They have to find a way to tackle Turner better this time around if they want to win.

Hopefully they can get some of that same help from the running game that they got yesterday...and no more drops by the WRs. Should be fun.

Coin toss. Atlanta is a great team, very tough to beat at home. Not overly thrilled about this matchup. But hopefully it will be another competitive, exciting game!

GB played a pretty sloppy game the last time these two met, and still it went down to the wire. I don't think they'll be that fortunate again if they play the same.

Some things I would like to see from GB:

-Run blocking: Starks played great against Philly, but he had holes to run through. If Green Bay's line gets dominated like they did the last time they played the Falcons...James Starks will be a non-factor.

-Just get the first down: I am praying we don't see the bomb on any 3rd or 4th and 1's. MM needs to go for the easy first to keep the ball moving and in the offense's hands. Especially against Atlanta. They dink and dunk down the field and run the ball well. They can control the clock with long drives, MM needs to stop trying to be fancy and just get the first down.

-WR's need to catch the ball: Again, they need to move the ball and keep it.

-Defense: Atlanta is going to get theirs. It's a ball control offense. Just tackle Michael Turner and their will be a lot less 10+ yard runs.

The last game went down to the wire. I think this one will too.

I think a big key for the Packers is to get up on the Falcons early. If they can sit be in the lead by multiple scores it would really put pressure on Atlanta to get away from the run. This will also keep the Packers defense fresher.

The Packers are playing better ball right now than the first time these teams met and I don't think they had any injuries this weekend. Did Cullen Jenkins play in the first meeting, was that the game he was hurt in.?

Jenkins played the whole game. The big injury that game was Chillar going out for the season.

There were so many of them, I lose track.

Any other Packer fans thinking about going to Atlanta for the game?
Ive contemplated it...but just bought a treadmill (Im training for a half marathon), a new washer and dryer, and concert tickets for the wifey (part of her Christmas present). Not sure our wallet is up for that trip.

Man, this is what happens when people get married. :goodposting:
That and can't get anyone else to go down with me. Instead, we are setting up a nice day of Poker and drinking and grilling prior to the game. No women for that day.

Well, the Packers can certainly win the game, but the Falcons to me are a very complete, strong team all around. Good line play, excellent wr/rb/fb, very good to excellent qb.

The Packers went "old school" against the Eagles for much of the game. I formation, Power I, Reverse Wishbone.

Any ideas if the Pack will try the same thing on the Falcons?

My :2cents: of the players by position.

QB: No doubt that Matt Ryan plays very well at home but Aaron Rodgers is the better QB.

Edge- AARON RODGERS

RB: No comparison. Turner better by far. Looking forward to seeing how Starks fairs in this one.

Edge- MICHAEL TURNER

WR: Roddy White is an elite receiver. Jennings a far second. After these two Green Bay has better depth & talent.

Edge- PACKERS WR's

TE: Gonzalez has had a great career and has always been an elite TE. No Finley just Quarless, meh.

Edge- TONY GONZALEZ

PK: Bryant has 28 FG's & averages 8 pts. a game. Crosby has 22 FG's & averages 7 pts. a game.

Edge- MATT BRYANT

DEF: Both defenses, IMO,are good and I think Atlanta benefits playing at home, but GB has been playing better lately.

Edge- GREEN BAY PACKERS

The Atlanta Falcons clearly earned the #1 ranking in the NFC for the postseason and they've had a great year. Having a bye last week should benefit them. They'll play hard and be a very tough opponet for Green Bay. This will be a hard fought game between both teams for 4 quarters. As tough of a game that's it's going to be it could certainly go into overtime but I don't see that happening. The Falcons are tough to beat at home as witnessed by their 7-1 record and the Packers were miserable on the road at 3-5. I think you can throw those records out this week though. I've seen Atlanta as a 1.5 to 2.5 point favorite. When all is said and done though I strongly see the Green Bay Packers winning and advancing to the NFC championship game.

Final score:

Green Bay Packers- 24 :goodposting:

Atlanta Falcons- 21

Is it pretty definite that Starks will get the bulk of the carries for GB again? Or is there any chance he'll have a more even split with Jackson this week?

Game situation will dictate but Starks has been quite a bit better lately. He runs with so much more authority than Jackson. I think Jackson is a good third down back, not very explosive, but a good blocker and catcher. Starks looked close to ripping some really long gains last week.

Journal Sentinal is reporting that Starks is now the "Chairman" of the RB committee.Starks projected 20 plus carries, Jackson gets most 3rd downs and obvious passing situations (for blocking), Kuhns gets short yardage

Nothing is definite with McCarthy's gameplan. There were several entirely new looks on Sunday, new personnel groups and new plays that we had not seen this season. I would be somewhat surprised if Starks were inactive, but not at all surprised by just about anything else that McCarthy does with his backfield this week. For all we know, Quinn Johnson could be the Packers' feature back on Sunday.

It really does depend, I think one of the reason Starks got so much power work was because of the Kuhn fumble this past week which was very uncharacteristic of him.

Kuhns still got the short yardage carries (power work, so to speak)Starks played because he practiced well. Starks got a lot of carries because he played well.BJ got 3rd down plays because he can block and catch.

He also got a lot of carries because the Eagles kept their safeties deep the whole game to stop Jennings.

Sounds like Green Bay got pretty hot under the collar regarding replay shenanigans last time they were in Atlanta. I though McCarthy should have used the flag regardless. What was he saving his challenges for at that point if not for use on a 4th down conversion that appeared low to the naked eye.

Rightly so. The NFL should fine Atlanta for that. The NFL should also control the replays at each field.

This is just another reason why the NFL should implement the College Replay system.

I am sure my beloved Packers have slow played a replacy or two over the last couple years. Part of the system and we all have to deal with it.

Why do analysts assume there won't be a lot of Packer fans at this game? Many keep saying the Falcons will feed off the crowd but fail to mention the Packers will too. Sure the crowd will be smaller but loud nonetheless. They may even have a Lambeau leap section in the endzone.

Wisconsin fans love weekend vacations in warm  weather.

McCarthy said Zombo's chances are fading, Spitz has a calf injury that will keep him out of the game, Bigby and Hall both got in decent work and Bulaga's shoulder hold him back. Bulaga said he wore pads because he was testing out a brace for his shoulder. He said he had no concerns whatsoever about his shoulder. He said the brace would prevent his shoulder from being wrenched in a backward position. Jenkins was held out of team drills just to make sure his calf wasn't stressed. He said he worked hard on cardio during that time.

Warm? Have you been following the weather in that part of the country? Of course it will be warmer than Green Bay but the high in Atlanta today is forecast to be 32.
