Preseason Week 1 Thoughts (1 Viewer)

Have I mentioned thats its nice having Garrett and not Phillips wearing the headset?

I'm kinda likin the Rob Ryan long hair, wild man kinda thing, to Garrett's clean cut, detail-oriented kinda thing. Odd couple in Big D!

I'm still watchin the 1st half, but my take on the 1st stringers:

-Felix, if healthy, will be very good.

-It's nice to see a youthful O-line. Got rid of the dinosaurs.

-Lets see lots of rollin out with Romo.

-The D looked a little rusty. I like Sean Lee.

-Orton remains solid. He's just solid, not flashy.

Heck Janikowski almost made the field goal on the kickoff.
I still think they should give 1 pt or something for being able to do that. Give the kickoff team a point and the receiving team takes over at the 20. Im sure this will open a can of worms but it makes kickoffs more interesting since they effectively reduced the return %.
What if it was a 2pt conversion? You make your PAT & you PUT IT THROUGH UPRIGHTS on KickOFF you get a bonus point. AND 1. I think CANNON LEGS are way better than Precision Legs. Kickers are already little guys. I like Buehler-dude outruns people, likes to hit hard, bombs it and is a badass. reforms kickers image in good way.ANY THOUGHT that with all of the TOUCHBACKS from KICKOFFS it will PRODUCE LONGER FIELDS....MORE YARDAGE on OFF? If you start your drive at your own 40yd line you can only gain 60yds. This way you get more 80 yd drives. I'm hoping it's true for my players at lease. Perhaps it creates a little more oppty for burners in the league. Ford. Djax, Wallace. Maybe not.KICKOFFS vs STARTING AT 20. W/o Kickoffs would Saints have won the Superbowl? You get a chance to get the ball back.Would Rookies and FA have a change to play their way on the team? W/O kickoffs you automatically give the OPP a 3&out to waste the clock which would totally change the game. GOD I hope RIvers is the best player in the League. People questioned me after trading FITZGERALD/WELKER/MCLAIN for him after 2008 seaons. BY THE WAY it was SIR MIX A LOT's Birthday Today. GO ENjoy some big butts while you can

WATCHING REPLAY of DEN/DAL game and Dwayne Harris is having a great game. Short pass, broke for 70yd TD and McGee passed to Harris for nice catch in end zone. McGee 2pt conversion to go up by 1 w/ 15 sec left in game. Dude was poised. Hit RUcker (wide open) on the run. Too bad his name isn't Tebow we'd be talking about him more.

I didn't get to catch too many games.

I looked up my two NE Pats. It seemed both had fumbles. Maybe Scout Vereen.

I was hoping to catch McCluster to see how he did.

Would love to see some of my roster reserves in action or see how all 45 of the STL WR's do so I can narrow it down to which 9 I want to target for Bradford 1-2punch.

First impressions watching the Buf running game.

Fred Jackson is an NFL running back, nice cuts, a nice stiff arm.

CJ Spiller is not an NFL running back. He loses all momentum with any contact. His first run he gets stopped COLD by 1 arm of a dlineman who still has a o-lineman on him. His 2nd run he has a nice hole, puts a spin move 7 yards down field and totally stops going forward. NO power.

Also the rule change on kickoffs seems to have made a huge difference. A lot of teams starting out on their own 20 or inside it. Heck Janikowski almost made the field goal on the kickoff.
Yes. Hated this change.Gruden summed it up after a few touchbacks with the  "That's exciting..."I wonder how this will go and if teams start taking bigger chances returning kicks caught 6 yards deep in the endzone. Don't like the change.J
If significantly fewer players get hurt as a result of the new rule (and the reason for it) do you still hate this change?
I'm old school enough I guess that kickoffs just seem like part of football. It's all a balance. There would be significantly fewer injuries if they went to flags instead of tackle. That's not happening. I'm fine with the changes for the defenders and helmet to helmet stuff. The kickoffs seemed ok in my opinion though. I'm anxious to see how it evolves but last night, I was definitely with Gruden  on the kickoffs.J
:goodposting: This rule is terrible. Are there really enough injuries on kickoffs to warrant this rule? I think they overreacted. If it was as bad for injuries as they claim, the players would have spoken up more. They have said very little to my knowledge. I will also go on the record and state that this rule will be gone next year once they see the results.

Panther Fantasy Thoughts

1. The D is going to be agressive. Great selection in leagues that only reward sacks, turnovers, and TDs. Goodsen is returning kickoffs and wasn't afriad to bring them out for 5 yds deep. Edwards looked strong returning punts.

2. Olsen looked studly. Clausen likes him, Cam likes him.

3. I'm bumping Cam down this year. Too much poise in the pocket. He played slightly more than half the game and not only did net a rushing yard, he didn't even look to run once.

4. DeAngelo gave us a glimpse of why he's the 2nd or 3rd best NFL back.

5. Goodsen will have value in ppr best ball leagues if he can fix his fumbling issues. Both he A Edwards will have value in leagues that reward return yardage.

From seeing most of the games so far thing sI have noticed

-I love Felix this year, looks fast and a perfect fit for the offense

-Fox is going to run his exact offense in Denver that he has ran for the last 8 years or so in Carolina (Moreno might surprise)

-Vincent Jackson is going to be a force

-Sam Bradford and Mathew Stafford are going to be the sleeper qb's to have this year

-Tebow isnt pretty but gets results

-Greg Olsen could surprise

-I havent been a fan of Cam but he looked really good tonight, hell of an arm

-Rivers and Vick will be your 2 favorites for MVP

-Alex Smith just isnt a good NFL qb

-Julio Jones looked outstanding (so smooth)

3. I'm bumping Cam down this year. Too much poise in the pocket. He played slightly more than half the game and not only did net a rushing yard, he didn't even look to run once.
I was wondering about that as well...but is it possible that was by design?Note: I did not see the game so I'm not sure of the circumstances on each play.

The Browns O-line looks GOOOOOOD. The first big difference from years past is that they are getting push on the right side. Since they drafted Joe Thomas their left side has been good with their right side lagging but last night their right side got more push than the left. They also protected the hell out of McCoy- GB brought some 7 man blitzes and they were all picked up nicely. A couple of perfectly called screens helped but the Browns picked up a couple of first downs on routes that developed over the middle in the face of blitzes.

With all that time McCoy looked like a pro-bowler. No bad decisions, one great throw (TD to Cribbs) a couple of good throws, good anticipation of the blitz.

Robiskie's 1 catch was a nice throw but he didn't do anything to gain separation. He doesn't look like an starting NFL receiver to me.

Evan Moore can't break a tackle. Big and smooth looking he can't lean forward for a first down with a CB holding his ankles.

Watson could lead them in receptions again this year.

Very hard to say anything about Little. They were trying to force him the ball to see what he could do but most of them just didn't get there.

Using this logic they should just make the game two-hand touch.
By this logic we should allow the players to take bats and knives onto the field.Injury vs Excitement of the game is a question. If injuries are concentrated on a handful of plays then the sacrifice of those plays can lead to better football. Its a balance.

Eagles RBs are going to be much better then people think.Baltimore O with Lee Evans is going be very tough to beat.VJax is going to put up crazy numbers this year.
How are the Eagles running backs going to be so great if Vick puts up the historic numbers that have been predicted on here. Eagles fans are in for a letdown not because the Eagles won't be good, but because they are predicting this team to be historic.

Stevan Ridley and Taylor Price both looked great yesterday.
Cool. Tell us more what you saw. Especially about Ridley.J
Well right after the draft I said the Ridley pick was the worst of the draft. That he was a 7th round talent who could have been had in the 6th. But thursday he showed why BB is a genius. His scouting report (and what I saw at LSU) was a downhill pounder in the mold of BJGE. Against the Jags Ridley had countless carries where he was cought by 2 or 3 defenders at the line, made a nice move to break away from them and grab 3 or 4 yards. He got 3 goal line carries; two of which he had great tackle breaking, pile pushing runs, that could easily make him the goal line guy for them this year. On the other goal line carry everything was jammed up so he tried an LT style leap over the pile. He was stopped on top of the pile, but didn't go down and was up there for a few seconds. Ridley cought 7 passes out of the backfield, and on each one looked elusive and quick, and made more out of what was there. On one play he got a screen at the 16 yard line, and out ran the Jags secondary to the front corner of the endzone. On two other drives Ridley got them to the 2 yard line, but the pats let Richard Medlin walk into the endzone untouched. Otherwise it could have been 5 TDs.As for Price, he had 5 catches for 105 yards, and one magnificent touchdown. Video of Price's TD is below. Twice he caught passes about 10 yards from the line, and dashed down field past the defense for long gains, one of which went for 50 yards.

Ridely TD Price catch

 Worst analogy ever. The real problem is young phenoms getting injured playing a bit of special teams and never come back the same from injury. I say get rid of the rule and expand the roster to 50 to allow for a few more special teams niche players and breathing space for guys missing extended time as a result of the new concussion rules.Time to start a new thread on the issue IMO.

The Vikings offense has about as much rhythm as a grandpa. They'll gain yards, but stall out a lot. Ryan Longwell may just be the best fantasy prospect on the team.

Joe Webb's QBing skills have come a long way, but have a long way to go. Right now I'd say he's the third best QB on the team. Ponder looks like a duck out of water, but he has a higher QB IQ compared to Webb, except when he thought he could run the ball. He's sorta shifty, but not even close to fast enough to pick up positive yardage with his feet on a regular basis.. he's got to learn to throw the ball away when he doesn't have an option and the pocket is collapsing. Another thing is Ponder looks physically kinda small. Like Brady as a rookie. I think he needs a year just to bulk up.

The Vikings o-line play looks like another year of regression. They still lack any quality depth and if we sustain injuries to the line like we did last year, Ponder or Webb will be starting by week 5.

Defense looked very meh. Christian Ballard is the real deal. I think it takes him a year, but he'll be our starting RDE in 2012. Not happy with our new nose tackle. Ayodele couldn't shed a block to save his life and has zero push for a guy his size. LBers are a strength. They look great and have a lot of quality depth. I'm excited to see Erin Henderson this year. The secondary should be better unless we sustain any injuries. A lot of the younger guys look fundamentally unsound. I lost count of the number of times I was screaming, "TURN AROUND AND PLAY THE FKING BALL."

Does this derail the Julius Thomas hype train? How do TEs fit into the typical Fox offense?

Marion Barber looked BEASTLY. Like the MB3 of old running right off and over people. If CT continues to look uninspiring and MB3 keeps it up he could be in for more then just a short yard/goal specialist.

..Take it with a grain of salt because the first unit o-line was still out. It's something to keep an eye on though.

If he stays healthy, Mike Vick will easily be the #1 player in FF. By a wide margin. He looks unstoppable, as Joe said.

I am giving serious consideration to taking him #1 overall, which seems crazy.

T. Jackson looked like he did in Min. I thought Charlie Whitehurst played better, but if Russell Okung's injury lingers all year it will be a long season for Seattle and frustrated Seattle player owners.
I was just going to post this. I know it's been a short offseason, but the Tarvaris Jackson of Seattle looked exactly like the lost, incompetent Tarvaris Jackson of Minnesota. Whitehurst played better, but "better" is a relative term and he did it against a second team defense. Downgrade all Seattle skill players, if you haven't already. Their offense is going to be terrible.
Too bad Sidney Rice signed in SEA....he's going to be a waste of talent in SEA. I know a lot of folks here are high on Marshawn Lynch as a mid round RB, but I am very concerned.

Absolutely. Forte has never been really good punching it in near the goalline, so Barber could easily fill that need for CHI.

:goodposting: I agree with Bass on all of these....especially Olsen. CHI is going to regret letting him go.

I'm sure it was by design, but I still expected instincts to take over and him to take off down the field. The fact that didn't happen means bad things for his fantasy numbers.

He didn't play last night, but I'm moving Steve Smith up the board. Between the OL giving Cam some time, Cam hanging in the pocket, and then Cam's ability to move around in the pocket, there's no way anyone will be able to cover Smith that long. With Cam's cannon of an arm, Smith will have the whole field to work with. Smith is going to rack up a ton of long TDs this year. I wouldn't expect 100 recpt like he's done in the past, but his yards per catch and yac will be much higher this year.

Rather than the smoke route we've gotten used to, expect more of the playground routes.

It's one game so I'm trying to be careful but I'm thinking this might be the best year to be a Browns fan in a while. I hope so. J

The Eagles and Vick really stand out. I mean Vick played without his starting two WR's and he looked like the league MVP. Some people call the Eagles the Dream Team, I would call them the real team when it comes to being the NFC's superbowl favorite for years to come.

* With 2nd and goal at the 3, Arizona's 1st team offense couldn't punch it in with 3 straight running plays against Oakland's 2nd team defense. Pretty pathetic. * Arizona's line looked weak especially run blocking against Oakland's 1st team defense. I don't expect much again from Arizona running backs this year.* Hightower is running with purpose and lots of energy. The Skins line looks viable. The offensive scheme looks like it might be creative enough to give Hightower some open field to use his energy and create some plays.
Instead of piling on Arizona's run O, take a second and consider Oaklands run defense. They have one of the leagues best D lines, and they stood up and tossed around the AZ O-linemen. They're pretty good. I'll also agree with an earlier perspective of the AZ run game. Beanie looks slow and tentative, and Ryan Williams looks fast and decisive. I think it will be the Ryan Williams show in AZ sooner than later. For the Raiders, Denarius Moore is pulling down grabs in space and has the look of an NFL veteran looking to score on any play. Michael Bush is in the best shape of his life, and he's like a bowling ball. If DMC gets dinged up, Bush will be a top 10 back. Jason Campbell still has some work to do, especially with his timing and deep ball. It's just the first preseason game, so it's hard to judge anything past midway through the second quarter. What I saw from these two teams is that the Arizona passing game is going to be good with Kolb. The Raiders are going to continue to be run heavy, but with strength on the D-line, but they are still a work in progress in the defensive backfield. Too early yet to assign any pass fail grades for either side. Just some quick first thoughts here.

From a Carolina point of view:

* Mike Goodson's butter-soaked gloves continue to result in fumbles. He fumbled the football twice against NY, but luckily only lost one. Rivera made a point after the game that fumbles would not be tolerated. Goodson is an electric player in space and has jitterbug quickness, but fumbles will kill him.

* Cam Newton - solid but unspectacular. He has a lot more to learn and to be honest, he did a lot better than I expected. The man is massive. He just looks like such a presence back there. He clearly has tons of arm strength and is not afraid to challenge a defense deep if he sees a favourable matchup. I think he could do with sharpening up his footwork a little bit; he threw off his back foot a couple of times too many.

* Armanti Edwards - showing everything he is capable of. He worked hard in the offseason to field punts and improve his receiving skills. That work is paying dividends. Edwards had two fantastic punt returns, including one where he caught the punt on one side of the field and proceeded to sprint across the length of the field and turn it up for a 21 yard gain.

A couple observations/ponerings:

ELi's demeanor bugs me. ABradshaw is the best RB on the Giants. Nicks looks ready to dominate.

Can I trust Felix?

Raider’s pass defense looks leaky than a dorm faucet. VJax looks set up to have a nice year.

Yes, because bats and knives are such a critical part of the game.

Perpetual touchbacks does not equal better football.
This has nothing to do with this thread. Please stop pissing in the pool.

Thought this too. How can they not resolve this any better than that?J
Well, they did use a first round draft pick on it. Maybe they are looking to the class of the NFL right now to see how to build a team. Free agency hasn't exactly been a source of upgrade for them.
Didn't they hire Tim Ruskell ?? What did you think was going to become of the Oline. Look at what he did and said while in Seattle to the Oline

Was at the Atlanta/Miami game. A few thoughts:

Julio Jones was the featured player for the Falcons while 1st teamers were in. First play, as I predicted, was a go-route to Jones. Ryan over threw him. Still, on other plays Jones looked smooth, fast, and willing to head upfield against defenders. They used his speed on crossing routes and an end-around. Matt Ryan's numbers should be better. Harry Douglas even looked good. Actually, Matt Bryant (K) might be the one to grab. The Falcons will score often. And their defense will probably still give up some big plays.

Jacquizz Rodgers didn't show much for the Falcons. Not yet the replacement for the electric Jerious Norwood (when he was). Jason Snelling was all-around solid, but not spectacular. He is valuable for the Falcons, but won't be a fantasy stud, unless Turner goes down.

Oh, Gonzalez probably isn't featured as much. Similar to Snelling, he will be valuable to the Falcons, but less of a consistent fantasy factor.

Henne looks bad. The Hartline TD was a broken coverage against the 2nd team defense. Henne and Hartline were totally on different routes earlier. Matt Moore looked more resilient, but not better. His interception was a poor decision into deep triple coverage.

Daniel Thomas had just a couple carries and did nothing.

I'm a little behind making my way through the games but one observation from the Giants game.

I'd be shocked if Hixon (assuming he stays healthy) isn't the slot guy to be Eli's outlet and safety blanket. He is a solid, reliable veteran with goods hands, able to make catches over the middle in traffic.

Given the loss of Boss + Smith and with Manningham being outside / a little inconsistent that's who I'd line up there for sure...

Shonn Greene looked very good last night, and more importantly, he was on the field for all but two plays with the first team. He ran with good vision and power, and John Conner was giving some excellent blocking. If the Jets stick with this plan of having Greene as the team’s primary ball-carrier, I think he’s a RB1 who can be had for very good value.

Also, I think that Sanchez and Holmes have a very good comfort level and I’ve bumped up my projections for Holmes. I know Mason finished with more catches last night, but Holmes was Sanchez’s first read on two of those passes which went to Mason, and I think Holmes is a lock to lead the team in targets.

Any Browns fans who can say anything on Armond Smith? Seems like there's some potential - elite speed, good running team, Brandon Jackson ahead of him for COP. Seems like this year's Kareem Huggins or Chris Ivory, and I mean that in a good way.
