Prisco's New NFL Rankings (1 Viewer)

NFC East is the best division in football but the winner is 9th best in the league?  Explain that logic.

And there's no way 6 of the top 7 teams in football are in the AFC.
Yea, but who do you pick as the top team at this point? I think the team that finishes on top will DEFINITLY be a top 5 team in the league, however I have no problem with the rankings because right now you can make a case for any of them (except maybe the skins who are just average, middle of the pack is about right on).
Please attempt to justify this stupid homer statement that you just made.
 I think he's right and my hate for all things Cowboys burns hotter than 1,000 suns so it pains me to say that.

Where Prisco is off by most:

1. Jaguars. He's got them ranked #5 when they are a below average team. Drop them down about 14 spots.

2. Bears. Best defense in the NFL and he's got them at #20. He should move them up about eight spots.

3. Cardinals. They look better on paper this year with Edge on board, but they are not an above-average NFL team until they prove it on the field. Move them down about eight spots from #13 to #21.

4. Chargers. Prisco has them as an average team (#16). They were better than their 9-7 record last year, and they'll be improved this season. Get on the Philip Rivers bandwagon and move them up about seven spots.

5. Redskins. He's got them at #14, but this is a solid team on both sides of the ball. Move them into the top ten -- say, up six spots to #8.

Others he's got too low: Seahawks, Cowboys, Chiefs, Raiders, Jets

Others he's got too high: Dolphins, Rams, Giants, Bucs
Maurile,I am interested in knowing why you have the Jaguars as a below-average team.

I already asked him once, he's dodging me. :boxing: ;)

Your thoughts?

I don't have much time to write up any in depth thoughts of mine, but the the first thing that jumps out at me is that the Bears are too low. They should win their weak division, and I'd expect Brian Griese will improve the offense
The ranking for the Bears is  . I honestly see no way they're not going to win the North. The Lions and Packers are a joke and the Vikes aren't there quite yet. Maybe next year though as I like the moves they've made lately.

It will be fun to revisit this after week 4 of the 2006 season

May 2006 POWER RANKINGS

Current Team Previous

1 Pittsburgh Steelers 1

Does this team have any holes? And please don't say anything about the loss of Jerome Bettis. He won't be missed. What's even more amazing is Ben Roethlisberger is still getting better. They are the team to beat.

2 Indianapolis Colts 2

Will they miss James? Not with Joseph Addai on board. This kid is explosive, something James was not. The offensive line remains a concern.

3 New England Patriots 3

Oh no. The Patriots have lost a ton of players and haven't added that many. That was the cry in March. In April, they had a great draft. Don't worry about this team. They'll be there again.

4 Carolina Panthers 4

They did well in free agency and then followed that up with a heck of a draft class. This is the team to beat in the NFC. The Panthers are loaded.

5 Jacksonville Jaguars 6

Losing Jimmy Smith to retirement hurts, but there is a lot of young talent at receiver that just needs to step up. The addition of tight end Marcedes Lewis will really help the passing game.

6 Miami Dolphins 5

Getting Jason Allen in the draft will help the secondary, but they lost Ricky Williams for the year and there is still some uncertainty about Daunte Culpepper. If he misses a month, they certainly won't be this high.

7 Denver Broncos 7

Adding Javon Walker -- if he's back to his pre-ACL injury form -- is something this team needed to help stretch the field. But what does the drafting of Jay Cutler say about Jake Plummer?

8 Seattle Seahawks 8

They've made some nice additions on defense and the draft brought a solid cover corner in Kelly Jennings to replace Andre Dyson. But losing Steve Hutchinson is not something they can get over easily.

9 New York Giants 9

Getting LaVar Arrington will help the defense, and taking Sinorice Moss in the second round will help the offense. The offensive line and the secondary have to play better for this team to improve.

10 Dallas Cowboys 10

Getting Bobby Carpenter in the first round of the draft gives the Cowboys two good edge rushers in their 3-4. The offensive line is still a concern, though.

11 Philadelphia Eagles 11

They had a heck of a draft, which will help right away on both lines. There still is a question mark about the receivers. Who is the go-to guy? Donovan McNabb appears focused.

12 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 12

Improving the offensive line was priority No. 1 for this team and they've added some players to make it more competitive, including first-round pick Davin Joseph. That will pay dividends.

13 Arizona Cardinals 21

There is some talk that Green will leave after this season. That makes this a huge year for him and this team. There might be a playoff game in that new stadium next January.

14 Washington Redskins 14

The draft didn't help much, so they better hope their free-agent signings do the trick. They’ve also added a good offensive coordinator in Al Saunders, which will help.

15 Kansas City Chiefs 16

They haven't done a lot in the offseason, aside from getting a new coach in Herm Edwards. Drafting Tamba Hali when they did should help the pass rush.

16 San Diego Chargers 17

Don't worry about Philip Rivers. He'll be fine. But this first year with him starting could be a step back for the Chargers before they take off next season.

17 Minnesota Vikings 18

They've made some nice moves since the end of last year, including drafting Iowa linebacker Chad Greenway in the first round. But can Brad Johnson be the answer at quarterback at his age? Will they regret letting Daunte Culpepper go?

18 Cincinnati Bengals 15

Why so low? It's the Carson Palmer factor. He suffered his knee injury just five month ago. When will he be ready? If he can't play for a month or so, this team is in big trouble.

19 St. Louis Rams 19

The offense should be explosive again, and they've added some good players on defense. Getting Ty Hill in the draft was a must to improve their coverage.

20 Chicago Bears 13

They were very good on defense last year and so-so on offense, yet they went strong on defense in the draft. What the heck was that all about?

21 Baltimore Ravens 20

If they get Steve McNair, they will move up some. But until it's official, we'll wait.

22 Atlanta Falcons 22

The defense should be better based on some free-agent signings and the draft, but that's not the issue. The issue is the passing game. Can Mike Vick improve in that area?

23 Green Bay Packers 24

Brett Favre decided to play again, which is a good thing. But they still have a lot of questions, starting with running back.

24 Houston Texans 30

They should have taken Reggie Bush, but they had a good draft anyway. If the line can protect David Carr, they'll be much improved.

25 Tennessee Titans 23

Is Billy Volek really a starting-caliber quarterback? Vince Young is a ways away, so he better be. Signing several high-priced free agents and then letting McNair walk is a strange mix.

26 New Orleans Saints 25

Reggie Bush will be a star, but when will Drew Brees be ready to play? That's the key issue facing this team in the next three months.

27 Oakland Raiders 26

They've added Aaron Brooks to play quarterback, which could turn out to be a good thing. The draft added much-needed help on defense.

28 Cleveland Browns 27

Is Charlie Frye ready to take the next step? That's the key question. The Browns must think so because they traded Trent Dilfer. They have added some good players in the offseason.

29 Buffalo Bills 28

If J.P. Losman makes strides, they'll move up this board. If not, they'll stay here. The offense still has a lot of holes which is why they're down so low.

30 Detroit Lions 29

If they think Jon Kitna and Josh McCown are the long-term answers at quarterback, they better think again. They're serviceable for now, but is that good enough?

31 New York Jets 31

New coach Eric Mangini has his hands full here. They had a good draft, but who plays quarterback? It's a two-year rebuild for this team.

32 San Francisco 49ers 32

They're moving in the right direction, but there's a long way to go. Give this team at least another year of growing, then in 2007 they should be competitive.

 wow. Jags are a VERY solid team from top to bottom with depth to spare. I agree fully with this.
2. Bears. Best defense in the NFL and he's got them at #20. He should move them up about eight spots.3. Cardinals. They look better on paper this year with Edge on board, but they are not an above-average NFL team until they prove it on the field. Move them down about eight spots from #13 to #21.
Agree 100%

Rivers is inexperienced... my best guess would be a mimick of Palmers first full year. 8-8 at BEST this year. But Rivers could be really doing well by years end.
Others he's got too high: Dolphins, Rams, Giants, Bucs
So you mean an improved offensive line, A QB who is young and playing very well, maybe has the best deep ball in the game, the Offensive Rookie of the year in Caddy, A healthy Clayton and Galloway with an emerging Alex Smith... oh yeah... the #1 defense in the NFL? They are to LOW. Sorry way off on that.

I have only seen Simms play in person twice, but I have a very hard time believing this. The long TDs to Galloway last year were mostly short slants where he ran 50+ yac. IIRC.Anyone back me up on this?

He threw two deep passes against the 'Skins, one in each of their games, that were beautiful. The first was a TD, and the second should have been but for the WR not controlling it as he came down. I'm not a Simms fan on a personal level, but he certainly has talent. Now, "best in the game?" I don't know about that . . .

How do you Atlanta fans feel about being the 22nd best team.
Laughed. Especially well into the season last year the Falcons were power ranked 2nd. Some key injuries to the defense and some weird play calling were the issues, not Vicks passing neccessarily (2 green WR's). Atlanta signed a pro bowl Dlineman, and 2 starting safeties in FA and picked up arguably the best corner in the draft at 37th. And this Spring Vick is actually working out with his receivers for the first time. It's nice to fly under the radar.....

.

Yeah. Got a little fired up. He does have a real pretty deep ball. Pretty accurate too. Best in the NFL, probably not, but he can chuck the rock.

Definitely incorrect. I have had season tickets for 9 years, and can only remember 1 prettier deep ball in person...Randall Cunningham.Carolina 11/6 - 50-yard bomb to Galloway in the back of the end zone

Wash 11/13 - 30-yard floater to Sheppard late to tie...not deep but great touch

NO 12/4 - throws a perfect 50-yard strike to Galloway in the corner, but dropped

NO 1/1 - hits Galloway for a 44-yard bomb, which is then nullified by penalty

Wash 1/7 - playoff game where Sheppard drops the 35-yard strike in his hands

I vividly remember these 5 passes as being beautiful to watch...great touch, arc, and accuracy.

The only short slant turned into a TD was during the San Fran game that Galloway turned up the sideline for 70+ yards.

Well I haven't seen enough of Simms to speak to how pretty a deep ball Simms throws but his stats don't seem to say he's been all that successful throwing deep.

Simms started started 10 games and had 313 passing attempts with 21 for 20+ yards and 3 for 40+ yards. Now the Bucs like to win with a strong D and ball control so it's not like they are asking him to throw deep to often so that might have kept his numbers down some.

So I looked at Leftwich's numbers. Leftwich also started 10 games and had 302 passing attempts. The Jaguars also have a strong D and don't ask Lefty to go deep too often. Leftwich had 31 for 20+ and 5 for 40+.

It could be that Simms was reigned in a lot of the year as the coaches gained confidence in his ability to throw it deep. But the numbers alone don't show him as an exceptional deep ball passer, much less the best in the game.

Good numbers, but if you notice my last 3 "bombs" were dropped or nulified by penalty.I also said "prettiest", not "best". Favre, for instance, throws a bullet on a rope...Brad Johnson is accurate but rarely spiralled...etc.

Simms certainly won't be lobbing the ball downfield like the Cunningham/Moss/Carter/Reed Vikings...but would expect more this year as confidence builds.
