Pro tip for the “live” Christmas tree FBGs- cutting your own Christmas Tree is the way to go 🎄 🎅🏼 (1 Viewer)

We have been buying “live” Christmas trees from a few different local nurseries for roughly 25 years. This year there were no good trees to be found. Good trees to us are really full (fat) and tall.

Chopped one down to today at a “cut your own tree farm” for the first time and it’s so much better and cheaper. For some perspective we normally pay anywhere from $125-$185. This place was $60. So what if I had to bring along my chainsaw.

Smells great and since it hasn’t been sitting in the sun w/o water, there wasn’t a pile of needles when I finished putting the lights on.

Highly recommend.

Also used to cut my own when my son was young. An enjoyable family outing. Generally 3-4" diameter. Never thought of using a chainsaw. Just made sure my blade was sharp.

Dude, where do you live?  Around my parts, those trees would die because no one's buying a $100+ tree.  I've paid less than $45 for any one I got, even cut your own.

The only reason I stopped cutting my own is I have long COVID and that kind of exercise isn't for me right now.

In New England, this was the default saw for cutting your Xmas tree. Well, that style. Handsaw for a little job like that.
The place we go to has a tub full of them for you to grab on your way out to the field.

Cutting your own tree is definitely the way to go. We make it fun with the kids where we find different candidates and go to a voting system.  It turns into a fun competition.

There is a new cut your own place nearby, but just didn't have time to go there...would love to try it out.  My in-laws in Indiana have those things everywhere, but in Southern Missouri they are a little bit harder to come by.

We do always get a real tree.  Our usual place (locally owned hardware store) was picked nearly clean by the time we could go last Sunday.  We went to Menard's and they had a weak selection as well, so we called around a bit and found that Lowe's was still heavily stocked with trees and found one that everyone in the family thinks is our best ever.  I'm kinda shocked because I thought Lowe's would just have a bunch of overpriced crap, but we paid $70 for a beautiful 7.5 ft Norway Spruce and it looks fantastic.

This is interesting every year with my kids. It turns into a battle over whose tree we pick and there are always tears involved and "your tree is stupid" and "we picked your tree last year" comments.

I love it.

Apparently there's a shortage of frasier firs this year. We lucked out and got a good one and at a good price as well after searching many lots.  Few and far between though. Might have been covid related, but not sure.

Important to remember the reason for the season though. Jesus Christ is Lord.

Have a Merry and Blessed Christmas everyone!

This year's tree was decided by drawing sticks.  We were deadlocked at 2-2 between 2 trees.

My attempt and pulling the 'Dad's vote counts as 1.5' went over like a fart in church.

We got a place in the mountains last year with 40 acres and a bunch of living room sized christmas trees on one edge of the property.  Going to make a family tradition to start cutting down one, and planting two more, each year.

I would wager that tradition lasts all of one year for you.

My geometry teacher in HS did something similar.  We'd want to open the windows; Mr. Shura said no.  Then, he changed his mind.  He said, "We'll vote on it; you'll each get a vote...and I get 89 votes."

First of all, so sorry to hear.

Second, without derailing this thread, and don't want to intrude or impose, but if you'd be willing to share as little or as much about your Long Covid in the main Covid thread, I think many of us would find it insightful and helpful and a reminder of what's out there.

Pay $10 permit fee to chop down own tree in Idaho City every year.  About 40 minute drive from Boise.

The benefit of being allergic to real trees is not having to deal with all this nonsense.  ;)
I have that problem, at least when indoors with pine trees or wreaths. I can walk through a pine forest without a problem, though.

I like artificial trees because they’re cheaper in the long term, it’s always the same size, and I don’t feel like I’m literally throwing money away each Christmas.

First off, hope you get better soon.

Second, Maryland. They didn’t used to be so expensive. They have gone up exponentially each year. We also get huge trees.

My mistake, I forgot where you’re from

In Pa we use a hand saw, like real men

I jokingly mentioned bringing a chainsaw this year to cut our tree. Everyone laffed.  :lmao:
I mean I guess. We get giant 12’ trees and the base is like 10” round.

Takes all of 5 seconds.

Sounds exactly like my tree cutting adventures too.

Decades ago up in the mountains of Colorado when I was a lad of 20 my roommate decided that we'd head up to the pass and get us a Christmas tree since we could not afford to purchase one.

We couldn't find any small trees so I was recruited to climb to the top of a 30 footer to 'top' a tree, big mistake.

I 'thought' I was secure but before I knew it, I was free falling.

Not sure how many people have fallen 30 feet down a tree but it happens real-quick.  By the time I opened my mouth to attempt a horrified scream I was buried nipple deep in powder and could not believe I hadn't broken every bone in my body let alone gotten off without a scratch.

The most incredible part of the story is we found a tree and as we were hauling it back to his truck he spies ANOTHER tree and chops it down.  I was angry that he took another tree but we saw a buddy in town and asked if he had a tree because we had an extra that we could sell him cheap.  He bought it off.

I haven't attempted chopping my own tree again because I figure I could never exceed that Christmas tree experience but it makes me smile whenever someone talks about chopping down their own Christmas tree.🎄
