So you want to know how active your team will be with a good free-agency market coming up in three months? Here's a chart of how much cap space each team was due to have next spring as of Saturday, along with how many players each team has under contract:

Team Signed Players 2008 cap room

1. Tennessee 39 $40.85 million

2. San Diego 44 $33.03 million

3. Jacksonville 43 $32.69 million

4. Buffalo 49 $32.05 million

5. New Orleans 39 $31.69 million

6. Cincinnati 48 $31.45 million

7. San Francisco 48 $30.91 million

8. Cleveland 42 $30.31 million

9. Arizona 34 $30.27 million

10.N.Y. Jets 45 $27.72 million

11.Oakland 40 $25.98 million

12.Tampa Bay 48 $25.90 million

13.Miami 48 $25.56 million

14.N.Y. Giants 49 $24.47 million

15.Detroit 42 $23.50 million

16.Houston 43 $22.91 million

17.Dallas 40 $20.61 million

18.Kansas City 44 $20.27 million

19.Chicago 52 $19.80 million

20.Pittsburgh 43 $18.61 million

21.Green Bay 48 $18.37 million

22.Philadelphia 49 $17.17 million

23.Denver 49 $16.77 million

24.Minnesota 49 $14.88 million

25.New England 41 $10.93 million

26.St. Louis 45 $9.61 million

27.Seattle 44 $9.55 million

28.Indianapolis 48 $8.49 million

29.Carolina 35 $6.05 million

30.Atlanta 52 $5.79 million*

31.Baltimore 42 $5.00 million

32.Washington 45 -$20.72 million

* Not including unspecified potential rebate from contested return of Michael Vick's pro-rated signing bonus.

And yes, you read it right. The Washington Redskins are $20 million over the projected '08 cap, a number that will be reduced once the 'Skins convert some bonuses assigned to the '08 cap (including a hefty one paid to tight end Chris Cooley) to signing bonuses, which can be pro-rated over the life of the contract.

my boys have to spend some money this off season

Assante Samuel? hmmm. interesting.

Any good LB's or Oline available next off season.

A link to all FA's would be great here.

Those numbers are incorrect as most teams have millions of cap dollars locked up in incentives which are impossible to reach. It's a way for teams to move their extra cap space to 2008.

For instance:

The Packers extended Donald Lee and gave him 5 million dollar bonus or so if he were to block 5 punts this season. He doesn't even play on the punt team.

The Packers will get that money added to next years' cap.

He's not the only player on the roster to get an extension and have cap dollars hidden in their contract for 2008.

The NFL never releases the exact number to any media source, so no list is going to be exact. A guy on one of the Texans' board has tracked the texans' number for years and is always off (normally no more than 5 to 10%) for a variety of reasons including unreported (to the media) acceralation, fake incentives (as you have noted), and misreported contract dollars among other things. What this does do is give you a general idea as to if your team is cash strapped or when it is reported that your team has 20 million in cap room, don't get real excited because 18 teams have more room than your club.

Putting aside quibbling about the exact figures, there is an awful lot of cap room around the NFL which should lead to ginormous contracts for marginal players and insane contracts for the top FAs.

Also, unlike some previous years when FAs were limited to who had the cap room to make an offer, players should have more contracts offers to choose from meaning that other factors such as the quality and style of ownership, the coaching staff and intagibles such as the city they would live in may come into play when for players choosing where to sign.

Carolina looks screwed. Only 6 mil in space with 35 players signed up. Doesnt tlook like things are going to get better anytime soon.

4. Buffalo 49 $32.05 million
It's depressing to know that the Bills will probably only spend half of that. I love Ralph Wilson, but it'd be awesome if he'd sell the team to some billionaire that would spend more money.
Yeah, but 49 guys signed and all that money to spend is a GOOD thing. Who on the Bills roster is a FA that we can't afford to lose? I think we're in great shape! And I think Ralph is putting alot in the hands of Marv. If Marv feels we need a guy I think he'll go and get him just like he did with Dockery and Walker.

Because we all know spending money = championships! Maybe they can pick up a Dion Branch type WR for big bucks.

6. Cincinnati 48 $31.45 million
Woohoo  We'll be spend ALL kinds of money <_< [/suspenddisbelief]-QG
Sadly, they won't spend much. It would be nice if they added a GM to help Lewis. Maybe they can find some D help in FA? Maybe they won't have so many injuries either. I'd love to see what they could do if healthy for an entire season. Seems since Palmer got hurt they've been reeling from injuries ever since.

Chargers will spend most of theirs re-signing or extending their own players.

Michael Turner will eat someone's stockpile up a little... and get the Chargers a 3rd round compensatory pick in 2009.

The Eagles will have a lot more than that once they cut Jevon Kearse, Darren Howard, Montae Reagor, and Jerome McDougle.
