PSA: Never Forget That Life Is A Total Crapshoot (1 Viewer)

Our son and his BFF that he has known since he started elementary school (and lives down the street) both left to start college last week. They had seen each other practically every day for over 10 years. Our son spent his first week at school attending parties, concerts, and a football game with 100,000+ people.

His best friend didn't feel well as soon as he got to college, collapsed the second day he was there, never even got to attend to a single class, was put in an ICU, and they discovered he has an aggressive form of leukemia that has already started to spread. His prognosis is bleak and they have already started a search for a bone marrow donor. He may not ever get out of the hospital.

What words can you possibly tell the family to cope with this terrible and unfortunate situation?

Far as i can see, life gives us each the chance to live, love and leave things better each and every day. Nothing changes that, not even this. Tomorrow you, your son and his BFF have the same opportunity to bring their everylittlething to the day that they always do. That the results may break your heart don't stop what an incredible gift that is. My best to you all.

Very sorry to hear David. No words but my thoughts are with you, your son, and especially the young man.

Really sorry to hear. Maybe help spread the word about the importance of joining a bone marrow registry?  Takes little time and effort but you could save a life like your son's friend.

That is awful.I am really sorry to hear about your son's friend. there is not much you can say to the other family other than to try to be their friends and offer whatever support and encouragement that you can.

:goodposting:   My wife's friend is a leukemia survivor and they'll be doing a charity event soon (donations for LLS and bone marrow registry info). You young guys (18-44) get out there and register (bethematch.org). I'm not too old yet (getting there) but they don't use marrow from old farts like me too often.

I'm sure that any words that express your feelings on their son's condition will give them comfort.

How is your son holding up?

I see a lot of open heart surgeries ranging from your run of the mill CABG to effing crazy aortic dissections/aneurisms.

I see a lot of people where my initial reaction is - no wonder they are having their chest cracked open.. just look at them!  Then, way too often, you see the 15-35 year old picture of youth die on the table - and you wonder how that happens.

The Human Genome.  Our crapshoot... for now.
