Our son and his BFF that he has known since he started elementary school (and lives down the street) both left to start college last week. They had seen each other practically every day for over 10 years. Our son spent his first week at school attending parties, concerts, and a football game with 100,000+ people.
His best friend didn't feel well as soon as he got to college, collapsed the second day he was there, never even got to attend to a single class, was put in an ICU, and they discovered he has an aggressive form of leukemia that has already started to spread. His prognosis is bleak and they have already started a search for a bone marrow donor. He may not ever get out of the hospital.
What words can you possibly tell the family to cope with this terrible and unfortunate situation?
