Publix Step Dad Commercial - Thoughts? (1 Viewer)

Publix is trying to top the closet design company.

Hi Michael

Chris toiled for years raising his stepdaughter, and Amanda wants to be “mom” ten seconds after meeting the kid? That’s some nerve.

I'm a dad and a step-dad. I can honestly say that being a step parent is 100X more difficult. My step-son has always called me by my first name. I've always referred to him as my son. Met his mom when he was 1. Raised him ever since then. Biological dad is a piece of crap. Popped in a couple times to my sons life until he told him to go F off and never come back when he was about 14. I've always just been "Tom" and that has always been just fine with me. When he got in trouble that one time at 21 it was me he called at 4am. Not his mother, not his grandfather. That told me a lot more about our relationship than a title.

He is Army and when he was going off to do a tour in Iraq we had some strong conversation the night before over a few drinks of 12 yr WistlePig. He mad some joke about his sister being my "blood" and I stopped him and said "Whoa now. I've always considered you my son. I've loved just as much as if you were biologically my own." He said he knew that. He was just making a joke and thanked me for always being there and taking him to all those early Wrestling tournaments all over the country all those years. For being the one out there coaching him until high school. Pushing him to be better in sports and in life. Thanked me for being his "Dad" when I didn't have to be.

The only other time I can remember him calling me "Dad" was a few years back at a "Christmas in July" party with a bunch of guys from his company. My wife and I were invited as she was the leader of the Family Readiness Group. These guys were doing a lot of drinking and my son and this other guy started having a bit of a chest thumping situation. :suds::gang1::gang2: Needless to say my son was getting a little rowdy (as most of them were, lol). I had been talking to another guy from his base about who I was and what not. When my son came over the guy was like "Hey! Your mom and step-dad are ****ing awesome!" My son angrily responded "That's my DAD. HE AND MY MOM TAUGHT ME HOW TO SURVIVE!!! THEY MADE ME THE MAN I AM TODAY!!!":cry: That was when I knew it was time for my wife and I to leave the party to the younger crowd.

no idea what Publix is or had to do with that marketing. but agree it's a nice little story that made me tear up despite myself (and despite knowing it was coming from the 1st second)

Yeah I was "thought that's a grocery store" and googled it since that seemed to have nothing to do with grocery stores.

It was heartwarming, but also left me thinking, "Too bad it took her that long to think of him that way". The timing with the wedding and all just felt a bit off to me.

meh...whatever. I don't think much about the commercial one way or another. Nothing wrong with it other than it was very predictable.

I saw the ad again tonight for the umpteenth time and wondered who the actor was. I have to admit the commercial moves me a little. I'm a step-dad, get along well with my 2 stepsons even after a contentious divorce with their mom. They been good big brothers to my daughters, ~14 years older than their half-sisters. They call me by my name.

This thread was a top google search result! Everyone in the region knows Publix so there's no need to advertise specials. It's a good quality grocery store, well-managed, slightly higher prices than many, but many weekly BOGOs and specials. The purpose of the commercial is to make everyone feel good about the brand. It does just that and is still going strong.
