Punt and Kickoff Returners '08 (1 Viewer)

Any word in Seattle....will it be Forsett doing both despite his fumbling problems? Wilson on KR...Burleson sprinkled in?
“That will be a game-time decision and I’ll have to sleep on that one. It won’t be the most important decision I’ve ever made in my life, I don’t think, but it is ... going to have to come to me just a little bit.”- HC Mike Holmgren on who will handle returns

Mike,

Are you still planning on adding an update for the returnguys article tonight? Could you add a link here when you do post it so we don't have to go to the home page and keep checking. I spend more time on the boards than the homepage. Looking forward to seeing the update.

Wow, this league that I joined that was going to give return yards to individual players, changed it to team defense the day of the draft. Today I look on the league website, and I noticed that the Commissioner changed it today back to individual players. Unreal. Of course he has Ginn. That's why I usually only play in leagues that I run.

You've got to fight that. I'd even consider leaving a league over that. It's not the rule he changed that's a problem but the fact he's changing rules, any rules, after the draft to benefit his team.

I am fighting it, but I'm new to this league. Hopefully I'll get some support. I run three leagues and wouldn't dare do that, especially considering that he has the player most affected by this. Ginn would pass Moss in the WR projections.

Thu, Sep 4 Eric Williams, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks WR Nate Burleson is a candidate to return punts Week 1.

Could be an honest setup mistake...easy to do with all the configuration. You should have questioned him on it when you seen set to TD first of all.Best thing might be just to remove return yards all together for this year.

nah, the league was set-up a week and a half ago. I asked about the rule when the league was set-up on Yahoo. He then posted on draft day that he decided to switch it to the defensive teams. Now a week later, he changed it back to individual players. He also went out today and picked up a couple of individual players that also return kicks.

MJD no longer on returns?
Yeah... Witherspoon is the guy on returns now. He was one of the only Jaguars to have a good game. I give Mike H. credit for calling that. Speaking of no longer on returns... did anyone else notice how bad a game Ginn had? I drafted the guy in the middle rounds thinking that I got a steal in my return yardage league and I think I wasted a pick. Here is why...a) He had ZERO kick returns. Thats right... ZERO!!! This guy is supposed to be the 'return league' superstar of the world and they had anyone but him doing kick returns. Bess, Cobbs, Ndukwe, Ryan, and even my sister got in on kick returns before Ginn did. He was out there on some punt returns (all fair catches) but that was it. I am stunned... I thought this guy was a lock to be a return stud.b) Forget him being the Fins #1 WR. That is a load of cr@p. He had trouble getting open against the Jets and I don't think Pennington has the arm strength to get him the ball anyway.

I started both MJD and Ginn today.

Barring a miracle from Cutler, Kampman & Barnett tomorrow night, I'm going to lose to a weak team who had a subpar day himself.

I'm beyond pissed. I suspected MJD's job was in trouble, but Ginn's lack of kick returns REALLY sucked. If this sticks, my team is down a top WR.

Any insight as to what the heck went on in Miami would be much appreciated. I'm sure someone somewhere is going to ask the Dolphins why Ginn didn't return kicks. I'd really like to know if this is long term or not.

On a side note, Breaston put together a decent game with 3 catches and some return yards...too bad he was on my bench.

Any word why Ginn did not return kickoffs?
SPARANOSPEAK(On if he would like to see more out of his special teams on returns and on coverage)

"Yes, since the day I got here it's something that we wanted to do a good job with. I was happy to see early in the game Davone Bess take the ball and do exactly what you want him to do; makes the first guy miss, which you need to do as a punt returner and he gets going towards the goal line and he ends with a 23-yard gain or a 25-yard gain. I thought it was a heck of a run."

(On using Davone Bess on returns instead of Ted Ginn)

"I just told you what I see in him. I see him able to make guys miss and break tackles. If you can make a guy miss and break tackles then I think you got a chance. Davone's done that the last couple times he's had opportunities to return the ball and he's going to do it a lot more."

Anyone who watched the game - how did Bess look? If it looks as though it's only a matter of time until Ginn gets the job back he could be a great buy low.

He only returned 1 kick. Somehow both a 260 pound tight end and a 325 pound guard both got 14 yard kick returns. And here I thought there was only 1 Ndukwe in the league.Bess did get 1 of the punt returns which he took for 25 yards which is better then the 4 Ginn got on 3 returns.

On RotoWorld:

Ted Ginn Jr.-WR- Dolphins Sep. 10 - 3:56 pm et

The Dolphins are no longer using Ted Ginn Jr. on kickoff returns.

Ginn was on the depth chart as Miami's No. 1 KR all preseason, but Davone Bess and Patrick Cobbs have taken over there. Ginn is still returning punts.

The hits keep coming for Ginn owners with this wonderful update tidbit:
Omar Kelly, of the South Florida SunSentinel, reports Miami Dolphins WR Derek Hagan worked with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, Sept. 10, replacing WR Ted Ginn Jr.
Man, I thought I was making a shark play by picking up Ginn in a returns league. Starting WR, PR, and KR. Now it might just be PR.

More Ginn follies...

The Sun Sentinel reports the Dolphins were tinkering with the depth chart Wednesday. WR Derek Hagan, not WR Ted Ginn Jr., was working with the starting unit.

Ginn is officially dropped! I don't usually panic with players, but this kid is just not worth a roster spot anymore. He doesn't return kicks and his starting job is at risk. Yikes!

Thankfully the Ginn owner in my league wouldn't trade him to me...now the bust is stuck on his roster.

Steve Breaston is looking like a solid pickup - he was involved in the passing attack and he does punt/kick returns. I'm even contemplating starting him over Holt this weekend.

Any word on the Colts return game? Roby got released and Forsett was picked up.

Does Garcon move to KR, on top of PR? Does Forsett do KR and maybe PR?

from the Indy Star...
There won't be much of an adjustment period for Justin Forsett. Claimed off waivers from Seattle earlier in the week, the rookie running back is expected to handle kickoff and punt return duties Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts meet the Minnesota Vikings in the Metrodome. "It's something I've been doing for a while, so it's not a big adjustment,'' Forsett said Friday. "I've just got to catch the ball and learn the different plays we have. "It's a pretty simple scheme and one that's worked.'' Forsett, the Seahawks' seventh-round draft pick, has only moderate experience as a kick returner. He returned only 10 kickoffs during his four-year career at California and six for a 23.5-yard average for Seattle during the preseason. The Colts apparently like Forsett's potential enough that they waived Courtney Roby on Thursday. The former North Central High School and Indiana University standout averaged 20.5 yards on five kickoff returns against Chicago.

Lost amid the roster shuffling earlier this week were some anxious moments for Keiwan Ratliff. The veteran cornerback had his contract terminated when the Colts claimed Forsett off waivers, coach Tony Dungy said. At that time, the team hadn't yet decided to waive defensive tackle Ed Johnson and needed to create a roster spot for Forsett. Once the decision was made to waive Johnson, who was arrested on a charge of marijuana possession, the team re-signed Ratliff. Then, to make room on the roster for Johnson's replacement, free agent defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey, the Colts waived Roby. "It's business,'' Ratliff said. "You've just got to go along with the ups and the downs. I was hoping they were going to bring me back, but there are no guarantees.''

Anyone know if Eddie Royal is still in the mix for kickoff returns? He fielded the last of three Oakland kickoffs last week (and promptly took a knee as it was inside the last two minutes), but Andre Hall fielded the other two and I don't think Royal was on the field. Is it fair to assume Royal won't be back there much now he established as a starting WR?

MIAMI

Now Ted Ginn Jr. has been replaced on returns by Davone Bess, an undrafted rookie. Bess returned a punt for 25 yards in the opener against the Jets. Ginn let two punts drop and had 13 total return yards on three punts. Most telling, he doesn't fit the mold coach Tony Sparano is looking for in a punt returner. "I think a punt returner is a strong-body guy, strong physically, and he has a capability of making the first guy miss," Sparano said. "Bess has that ability. That's nothing against Ted Ginn. Ted's a speed guy where Devon is a bit more of a shake guy." Ginn will return some punts, Sparano said. And Ginn, while toeing the company line, saying he'll follow the coaches all the way, also says, "As time goes, we'll see where everyone belongs."

Mike,

Sounds like K. Robinson is going to be signed by Seattle. What do you think of the odds that he is used as the kick returner. I didn't see any of the kick returns by Josh Wilson so I don't know how he looks but K. Robinson did go to the pro bowl as a returner a couple years ago so I have to think that he would be an upgrade. Your thoughts...

This is from Roto:

The Seattle Times is reporting that the Seahawks are actively talking to Koren Robinson and could sign him this week.
