Punt and Kickoff Returners '08 (1 Viewer)

Josh Wilson is an explosive KR. I dont think I would take him out for KRob if I was Holmgren. If Koren returns punts, he would definitely be an upgrade over Bumpus.

MIN - RB Maurice Hicks should be active for the first time this year, although it could be a moot point this week since Rhys Lloyd is huge on kickoffs

In regards to Koren Robinson, you don't sign a guy who is basically on the streets and put him on the return team. Thats a recipe for disaster. I think Josh Wilson is safe for at least one more week.

Why did Cotchery return some kickoffs in the San Diego game? Will he get some kickoffs in more games?
I heard the commentators say they were kicking away from Leon Washington after a few big returns, though Washington did get at least one return after that. Not sure if Cotchery is on KR team or if he was just subbing in for someone.

It was just one return and it was on an intentionally short kickoff. It didn't get deep enough for Washington. Apparently either Cotchery is normally on the return team as a blocker, or they had a special hands team in there because San Diego started avoiding Washington. Cotch did a nice job with it and took it across the field and then turned it up. For a while I thought he might take it all the way, but there was just too much traffic. I think it will be a once in a year type deal.I started Cotchery in a return yardage league and was really hoping he'd take it all the way in for the TD.

MIA - Sparano indicated WR Ted Ginn Jr. would handle some kickoff returns this week
LIAR!!!!The whole Ted Ginn thing has me so pissed I've been avoiding this thread and then they have to do this? Seriously, why play stupid games with who is taking kickoffs? It cost me my week 1 matchup (lost by 1.8 pts in a 1/10 return yardage league)....and for what....so that the Jets wouldn't know who was doing kickoffs? Really?Sparano is dead to me.

Interested in seeing if Jon Stewart will continue returning kicks for the Panthers. Also, does it look like McKelvin is the Bills KR going forward?

I hear ya man. I took a middle round pick on him, thinking he would be fantasy superstar in my return yardage league. Thankfully I took a deep flier pick on DeSean Jackson that basically replaced him or I would be in trouble with my WRs.

I drafted Ginn in 5th round of my return league! Sparano lied. Ginn never returned kicks yet this year! I'll keep him on bench a while longer thinking Miami will use him in a close game! They havn't had a close game yet! Fortunatly I have LEO too and LEO been my kick returner so far. With Leo on bye this week I have to come up with something? Do I roll the dice with Ginn or find a replacement?

Looks like I'll have to start Sproles at RB this week. I'm confident that he'll put up 10-12pts in combined rushes, receptions and returns (1/20). Stewart is an every week start for me now but its his goal-line duties that have cemented the deal rather than his returns. DeSean has done well for me at WR, I'm starting Will Blackmon each week at DB and also have McKelvin on the bench, monitoring his progress.

I also drafted Ginn as my WR3 but ditched him last week. No one has picked him up.

Higgins, any news of getting him more involved in the offense? I noticed an increase in his receptions.. or was that just an abberration?

CAR - signed rookie WR Kenneth Moore from Detroit's practice squad, and put WR Ryne Robinson on IR

IND - Ratliff = PR, Garcon = KR

Anyone watch the Carolina game and know why J. Stewart returned the first Kick but didn't get any after that? Was he back there and the ball was just kicked away from him or was he replaced?

Per HC John Fox...On using Mark Jones to return kickoffs:

Jonathan Stewart, (who opened the game on kickoff returns) -- he got hit hard, which is part of the game. I don't think he was ready for the next one and as it went on I thought Mark did a very good job, so we left him in there. He does do that and he's a guy that we've relied on all season. We just haven't had a lot of reps with him; we've tried to spread the wealth a little bit as far as it relates to kickoffs. We felt comfortable with him and he did a good job so we stayed with him.

On if Jones will continue to return kickoffs:

We'll evaluate it, and those things are always game-time decisions.

On if it got his attention when Stewart was hit so hard on the opening kickoff:

I know it got his attention. It wasn't because we were trying to protect him. I think he just got a little dazed, and he wasn't ready for the next one, so we kind of liked what we saw from Mark and stayed with him.

Thanks Mike! I hope he isn't taken off Kick returns completely. It's not like they are over working him at RB!

Mike,

What is your feeling on Steve Breaston getting his KR job back when Boldin is healthy? I hated to see JJ Arrington return that kick all the way, I have Breaston. Thanks!

MIAMI

In case you forgot, the opening kickoff offered a reminder not only that Ted Ginn Jr. is still a Miami Dolphin, but that he is still Ted Ginn Jr. That means equal parts exasperating (a bobble) and electrifying (a 31-yard return). The Dolphins were smart to return Ginn to his rightful place: back deep. Tony Sparano's contention that the shiftier Davone Bess had a better shot to make the first guy miss made sense on punt returns. Ginn is the superior option on kickoff returns, which allow him to recover from a mistake and build to top speed before encountering a tackler. The Dolphins, short on playmakers, need all the explosiveness they can get. Now, though, Ginn must prove reliable enough to reward the Dolphins' renewed faith. "It was a relief," Ginn said. "I can't lie. I had fun and enjoyed it. Using me like that, you get more out of me. I'm active and already lathered to go on the offensive side." Ginn also noted that "You're going to see squib kicks and pooches a lot with me back there." We did. That's good. Even Sparano acknowledged that "they started kicking the ball away from him, which leads me to believe that they respected him a little back there." Yet you could see, on that muff, the reason for his reluctance: "Well, he dropped the first one, but he made a nice run."

Anyone have any insight on why Johnnie Lee Higgins was replaced by Tyvon Branch on kickoff returns? Will that be a permanent change?
Branch had won the job during preseason, however an injury and subsequent cast on his hand prevented him from being able to field the ball until last week when the cast was removed. The team did have him practice catching the ball one-handed during practices in August, however for some strange reason they decided that wasn't the best thing to try in game situations.

Now its probably a good time to reroster Ginn. He's been averaging about 4-5 receptions per game lately and has taken over kickoffs again. Also, he's playing Denver in week 9, so they're getting scored on and he might get a few receptions as well.

Branch only averaged only 15 yards a KReturn, Higgins was a beast. If anyone hears talk of putting Higgins back, please post.

What about Jones for Carolina? Is he going to continue w/KR/PR?

I thought Higgins was doing a great job as well, hard to believe that he is a backup.
