QB Andy Dalton, CAR (2 Viewers)

I'd bet dollars to donuts that Jay Gruden is currently in the middle of pleading his case to Jags brass to bring Dalton into the J'ville fold ASAP.

If I were Dalton I'd be holding out for at least the amount of money they are paying Foles NOT to play for the Jags anymore.

Seriously, he just left CIN. How bad do you hate Dalton to even suggest he should go from that organization to JAX? Is he a masochist?

Agree. I'd put my money on him landing in Jacksonville as Minshew's backup and chance to start if Minshew doesn't build off last year.

Makes all the sense in the world for both sides.

NFL Network's Steve Wyche reports the Jaguars have "legitimate interest" in free agent Andy Dalton.

Dalton requested his release from the Bengals and was granted it Thursday morning. The connection to Jacksonville is obvious, as Dalton's former coach Jay Gruden is the Jaguars' new OC. Gardner Minshew is going to get a chance to start in 2020, but we wouldn't expect his leash to be long under coach Doug Marrone, who is very much on the hot seat. Dalton also knows Gruden's offense in his sleep, making it that much easier in this peculiar offseason where players and coaches are unable to meet in person. With Dalton requesting his release, you would think he has something lined up already.

I think you can make a case he is coming in to be the starter if he goes to Jax and based on what I know about him he will value that over other options.

In any case, end of an era for Dalton and the Bengals.  2nd round pick to a terrible team (at the time) and he started 9 years and made 5 playoffs.  Good for him.  It was time for everyone, but I'm glad it ended well as the Dalton/Bengals era was easy to root for.

Completely agree. Maybe that's why I am hoping he at least has a year with a franchise like NE before he chases a big paycheck to another dysfunctional franchise. It's hard to believe that just two years ago JAX looked like a franchise on the rise. All their best players on D want out and their most productive player on offense has been on the trade block for a year. I doubt if Marrone/Gruden will be there for long.

ESPN's Jeff Darlington reports the Jaguars are "absolutely interested" in free agent Andy Dalton.

There's a clear need there following Nick Foles' departure to Chicago. Even so, coach Doug Marrone reaffirmed second-year QB Gardner Minshew was "no doubt" the team's starter during an appearance on Good Morning Football. The fit and connection with Jacksonville is also obvious as Jay Gruden, Dalton's former coach in Cincinnati, is currently filling the OC role with the Jaguars. Given the rabid rumors coming in only 24 hours after his release, we would expect Dalton to find a home as a veteran backup before Cam Newton.

NE makes the most sense to me.   Seems to me a short term deal should get done.  If it works he's their QB for 3-4 years.  If it doesn't he babysits Stidham or another QB.  I'm no Dalton fan, but he seems to me the right kind of QB for BB.

Imagine leaving that dumpster fire in CIN after all those years, and going to NE.  BB probably has more knowledge in a hangnail than all of the coaches Dalton's ever had.

Stidham is the QB in NE. If they have any interest in Dalton (and they have shown none), it would be strictly as a backup. They have only $1 million in cap room on top of it. Any commentary on Dalton going to the Pats is from out of town people. The Boston media at this point is resolute that there is no interest and it’s not going to happen.

I actually wasn't going off media reports.  Only what seemed a good system fit to me.  I'm sure BB thinks he can win with anyfat ### at QB, but he isn't winning with Stidham.  He just isn't.  He better come up with something unless he's OK going 8-8 the next two years

Anyone familiar with PFR may recognize their "Adjusted Passing" stats, where they take raw stats for every QB and attempt to era-adjust them by setting the average for each stat, for each season, to 100. Here are Andy Dalton's attempt-weighted career stats by this measure and, no, I swear I'm not making these up:

Y/A+ 99.2
NY/A+ 101.2
AY/A+ 98.8
ANY/A+ 100.1
Cmp%+ 98.6
TD%+ 102.0
Int%+ 97.9
Sack%+ 103.7
Rate+ 99.3

I mean, that's hilarious. You couldn't do better if someone gave you a copy of Madden and asked you to create a league-average QB.

Seems a little early to be giving up on Josh Allen.
No kidding. I wouldn't call him an elite QB but he has the potential. There's about a 1% chance of Dalton signing in Buffalo.

Kinda funny but I think we all view him as basically an average starting QB.. Dude did well for a 2nd round pick.  Now it's time to move on.  He's a top 32 QB, just have to find the spot.

Jax does make a lot of sense, if they want to win this year he's (probably) starting over Minshaw.

While this is true, their cap situation isn't all that different than N.O. was when they signed Winston. I'm sure Dalton could make more money from the JAX's of the world(and probably win about as many playoff games as he could with CIN) but given where he is at this point in his career I wouldn't be all that surprised if he took a $1mil/1yr deal like Winston did to go to an especially good situation.

As far as the $1mil left in cap space...

- I find it hard to believe NE is REALLY going to pay Burkhead almost $4mil this year. They save almost $3mil by releasing him alone but might save even more if he takes a team friendly one year extension. For a guy that has averaged ~500yards from the LOS and 4TD's a year since arriving in NE that just seems steep for a team that already has Michel, White, and Harris.

- Hightower played very well last year and I wouldn't be surprised if they rewarded him with an extension that could give them some cap relief in 2020. He counts for more than $12Mil on the books in his last year of his contract.

- I like Sanu but he'll be turning 31 this year coming off a 500yd/2td season he may have to change some of his $6.5Mil into incentives or sign a short term, team friendly extension to stay on the roster. NE has all the power on this one as there is a $0 cap hit for releasing him outright and getting all of that $6.5Mil back for the salary cap. It's truly shocking to me that they didn't add a WR in this draft but you can't really question their success.

- Is Jon Simon a lock to make the team? They save $2.3Mil if they release him. I've seen some places suggest they drafted Uche to play DE.

- You probably understand their depth chart better than I do but it seems to me Justin Bethel is a luxury as a ST ace that could save them more than $2Mil in his last year of his contract.

- Lastly, they could just go ahead and give Thuney the extension that he's earned then his 2020 salary could easily be less than the nearly $15mil he'll get under the franchise tag right now. I would assume they are going to lean on the run more than ever and locking Thuney in long term seems to make a great deal of sense. Their only draft picks they used on OL were late on day 3 of the draft so that might point to the fact they aren't planning on replacing him in the near future.

I'm not saying that they make ALL these moves for cap relief, just that I can see some wiggle room here without disrupting the core contributors on the team. If Dalton is willing to sign a Winston-type contract it seems pretty do-able to me. As for the local media knowing what roster moves NE will make before they happen... I was always under the impression that the Patriots kept most of their plans pretty close to their vest.

Personally, I just hope Dalton goes there even if it is for less money. Maybe Stidham will be great. But you have to admit there's definitely a possibility Stidham STARTS the season as QB#1 but doesn't END the season as QB#1. He would get first crack at the job to be sure, and he should. Having a guy like Dalton as QB2 makes all the sense in the world to me because going into the season with an unproven Stidham and a 35yo uninspiring Brian Hoyer seems like very un-Patriots poor planning.

Part of me thinks that Cam just takes a very small/short contract to play in Jax because is confident he can blow Minshew out of the water in a QB competition and knows if he does that he'll get paid handsomely when he proves he's still healthy and effective. JAX doesn't actually have a bad group of WR's either.

I like Dalton, I just don't think Dalton is going to save the job of the coaching staff down there. They need a hail-mary pass at a pro-bowl or bust QB and that would have either been Winston(now off the market) or Cam.

I outlined similar potential salary cap saving moves in other threads (including several options you had not brought up). The best way to assess the Stidham situation is looking at what they HAVEN’T done. They showed no interest in bringing back Brady. They didn’t draft a QB. They haven’t made any attempt to free up space to be able to sign someone. And they haven’t talked to any free agent QBs. Sure, they could have done a lot of things. But they haven’t. Maybe they will suddenly get involved with Dalton. It probably wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if they brought him in as a back up only. But up until now, they appear to be on the Stidham 2020 campaign trail.

But up until now, they appear to be on the Stidham 2020 campaign trail.
Yeah, that's what I was saying. That Stidham would be the starter in week #1. I was making a case why Dalton would make a better backup than Hoyer if he were willing to accept a Winston-type contract which he should be imo.

"Is he an elite starter? I would say no. Is he an above average starter? I would say no. Is he in the top 15 of the NFL? No. At $15, $16, $17 million, you really can’t pay that. He could certainly fill a void as a backup or a starter over an extended period of time, but a lot of things have to be around him to make him most effective.”

Whenever I read a Lombardi quote I'm left shaking my head and thinking, "WTF?".

"A lot of things have to be around him to make him most effective"? So your criticism of Andy Dalton is that he fits in the exact same category of 95% of NFL players. Or all football players at any level for that matter. It's a team sport with ~25+ starters when you factor in ST's so yeah ONE guy needs help. News flash. Maybe that just points to the fact with one of the worst run franchises in the NFL he's in the conversation as the 12-20th best starter in the NFL. I wonder if he would be better than that if "a lot of things around him" were a lot better than he's ever had the opportunity to play with before?

This isn't a dig @Faust for linking the thoughts on Dalton, it's just whenever I hear Lombardi analysis on this board it seems king of laughable. If you are out there on pins and needles Lombardi.... "no" we don't think Andy Dalton an elite starter. Thanks for clarifying that though. I guess that JAX could do anything if they were bidding against themselves for that giant Foles contract but I don't see ANY OTHER TEAM in the NFL that will pay Dalton "$15, $16, $17 million" in 2020.

He honestly sounds like a clown.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reports the Jets "have some level of interest in former Bengals QB Andy Dalton."

Cimini added that the interest has been categorized as "due diligence." The idea is seemingly to solidify their backup spot, as neither David Fales (zero career starts) nor fourth-round pick James Morgan are exactly proven commodities. Sam Darnold is still somehow only 22 years old and did improve in most statistical categories from 2018 to 2019. Dalton has always been a bit of a sum-of-his-parts QB, but it remains to be seen if he'll be okay with willingly being a backup.

Pretty surprised that the Bengals released him. It really seemed like they were looking forward to having him as a sounding board/mentor to Burrow.

The team that obviously jumps out is New England as Dalton could/would be the favorite to start there. However, if they are fully committed to Stidham(for some reason) a team that makes a ton of sense to me is Dallas.

They are in a Super Bowl window(in their opinion anyway) and Prescott is both on a 1 year deal, and has only Cooper Rush and a 7th round rookie behind him. As is stands right now, the season is over if Dak goes down, having Dalton to turn to would be an excellent insurance policy.
Hey, I got one!

But seriously, its a great fit, and its good to see a good team do something smart. Between the draft and this, are we sure Jerry Jones wasn't being held back by Jason Garrett all these years?

Rotoworld take:

Cowboys signed QB Andy Dalton, formerly of the Bengals, to a one-year contract.

Dalton had interest from other teams but will settle for a true backup job in Dallas. He's set to earn $3 million guaranteed in 2020 with incentives that could get him to $7 million. Unless Dak Prescott gets injured, Dalton will ride the bench, collect his $3 million, and become a free agent next offseason. The Cowboys now have quality insurance as Dalton would be able to put up quality numbers in this stacked offense, and it comes at a very affordable cost. Dallas' three-receiver set of Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb is among the league's best.

I have to think JAX is smart enough to offer him more money, and I hoped Dalton used that as leverage to get more than Winston did in NO.

Seems like SUCH a better situation to me than JAX. New coaching regime. The QB seems to be in a pretty seriously contentious contract squabble. I don't think that there's an absolute 0% chance Dak is playing somewhere else in 2021. If Dalton gets a chance in 2020 due to injury it wouldn't surprise me if we see the best version of Dalton that we have ever seen. This is a much more talented offense than he's every played with before.

Another great offseason move by the Cowboys here. I thought they were losing too much on defense to overcome at the start of FA but they have recovered nicely since then.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Dak Prescott will undergo right ankle surgery Sunday night in Dallas.

He's done for the season. There aren't words to describe how big of a loss this is to the Cowboys and the sport as a whole, as Prescott had a truly historic first four weeks of the season and was probably going to be in the MVP mix if Dallas was able to start stacking some wins. But now Prescott will endure a long road to recovery and has no contract beyond 2020. It would not be fun to be Prescott's agent right now. Andy Dalton signed in Dallas just for this emergency reason, and he'll be the starter moving forward. The stocks of all the Cowboys' pass catchers will take a hit. Ezekiel Elliott will be the engine of the offense.

- Rotoworld
Well it's Andy Dalton time now. The Dallas O-line will need to step up, as Dalton is nowhere as mobile as Dak. However if his arm is still strong he's capable of throwing bombs in this offense as long as he has time. I'd think Zeke reverts back into the 25-30 touch monster he used to be years ago.

Andy Dalton completed 9-of-11 passes for 111 yards in the Cowboys' 37-34, Week 5 win over the Giants.

Dalton came on with 6:33 left in the third quarter after Dak Prescott broke his ankle. It's Dalton's team moving forward for the remainder of 2020. He didn't do much of note before the final, game-winning drive when he hit Michael Gallup for a couple huge gains to get the Cowboys in field goal range. Dalton averaged a robust 10.1 yards per attempt in relief. He's no Prescott, but this is the best supporting cast of skill players Dalton will have ever played with, so maybe he can have some streaming appeal. The Cowboys host the Cardinals in Week 6.

When Jones did not give Dak the long term deal I drafted Andy in the last round. Tried to trade him to the Dak owner to no avail.  Was going to cut him but with Dak going down and the Dallas offense the Red Rocket might be a steal!!  :pickle:

Unleash the Red Rifle!

He's no Dak, but he's a seasoned vet that should be able to move this offense down the field

I'm going to be straight forward, I own Dak or did and loaded up in most of my leagues, was also able to have quality back ups for most but I will be putting in a waiver bid for Andy Dalton, he's going to have a lot of meaningless stats like 300 yds, 2 TDs, 2 Int or something where they don't win but he still lobs in 25 a week which honestly these days if you aren't stacked at other spots, you can lose by 10 a week at QB putting up a 25, think about some of the QB totals this year like Dak, Josh Allen, you aren't winning at QB with the scenario I just laid out BUT...perhaps you can stop the bleeding for a week or two and either muster a trade if you think you need it or start looking elsewhere.

I drafted Aaron Rodgers in the 10th+ as my back up in most leagues, he's been a bright spot so far but I am well aware of his fall from elite status last year or two.

I also think some weeks Dalton could put up 400/3TDs when Dallas is in a shootout, they would be wise to lean on Zeke to help open up the passing lanes, most QBs with Dalton's resume should be able to keep the offense moving.

In Superflex you could do a whole lot worse ... Dalton was serviceable early on in Cinci when he had weapons. He’s going to throw picks, but the RW blurb is right in that he’s never had that much talent around him.

Dalton will thrive in this situation.  He already looks locked in with Gallup.  He will have a couple of clunkers because that’s what he does, but he is still going to be the best QB in that division.  By all accounts, he’s a great person.  As a Bengals fan, I will be rooting for him.

I'm excited to see the ups and downs as well. :excited:

If Andy is comfortable running that offense, I agree with you that he'll thrive. He's absolutely loaded with weapons

Per Michael Gallup, this what Andy Dalton told the offense in the huddle when he replaced an injured Dak Prescott: "Focus up. This is what I came here for...I came here to win."

per Clarence Hill

I like Dalton, and I'm putting in a claim for him after losing Dak. Whereas in Dak I could have just the one roster spot for QB, I think I am also going to look to claim a backup as well to pair with Dalton.

That o-line is pretty unrecognizable these days compared to recent seasons. Dalton is obviously a lot less mobile than Dak, there will probably be some rough games where he is gonna need garbage time to get his points.

Well, fingers crossed.  I lost Dak and got Dalton and Cousins to try and cobble a QB production from.  I confess I was feeling pretty good about my chances a week ago and now not so much.
