QB Andy Dalton, CAR (1 Viewer)

Andy Dalton completed 21-of-37 passes for 171 scoreless yards and one interception in the Bengals' 27-3, Week 4 loss to the Steelers Monday night.

Dalton absorbed a career worst eight sacks in this one, losing a fumble on one, and his pick was a terrible fourth-down throw into the end zone. The Bengals flat-out had no answers and haven't looked good at all since their surprising Week 1 performance in Seattle. Dalton is well off the fantasy radar but does get a nice on-paper draw against the Cardinals in Week 5. He's still extremely hard to trust behind this Swiss-cheese offensive line.

That was one of the worst performances by an offensive line I've ever seen.   Dalton is fortunate to be walking this morning.

 
Andy Dalton completed 31-of-49 passes for 324 yards and one touchdown in the Bengals' 24-10, Week 8 loss to the Rams.

It was Dalton's first 300-yard game since Week 2. His lone touchdown was a one-yard hookup with Joe Mixon, but Dalton was throwing the ball pretty well and with ease much of the afternoon. The Bengals just couldn't put the ball in the end zone. Dalton has been a solid high-end QB2 much of the season thanks to heavy volume. The Bengals now head into their bye at 0-8.

This seems like a move of desperation by a desperate team. Dalton seems to be a decent QB but not elite in any way so he would need a good QB around him. I hope he moves on to a good situation.

He's the worst possible QB for a franchise. He's just barely good enough to keep around, but consistently terrible in big games under the spotlight. He's essentially a franchise destroyer because he ties up the team into years of mediocrity and gets paid the same as an elite QB. The Bengals would have been better off if they had drafted a Ryan Leaf type of QB instead because they would have moved on years ago.

you sure that's not the fault of the coaching there bud? I mean, how many years of Marv incompetent Lewis?! now this coach? cmon now. that's not the QBs fault. the GM never drafted an oline.or defensive players. Dalton has value. the Bengals front office does not.

this is kind of my point with a lot of QBs. many fans and observers seem genuinely disappointed - much less surprised - that even average QBs exist. not every player can be transcendent. Coaching and supporting cast truly matter. amazing QBs are dime a dozen in college but get exposed in the NFL for who they really are. for Dalton, we've only had glimpses here and there over his career. he'll get a chance somewhere else and maybe he'll be like his predecessor, Carson Palmer, with a decent second act to his career. he might not get the chance that Carson did and step into a starting role but whatever.

No, coaches get too much credit and blame. Dalton is just not good enough. He makes mistakes under pressure that can't be coached away. Like a Ryan Fitzpatrick type of QB, he is a serviceable backup, not a franchise guy. He's just not. Unfortunately a lot of those guys are QB1s because elite QBs are super rare.

 
Now that they have a 2 game lead for the first pick it's safe to put Dalton back in.  It might help AJ Green come back since he won't think he'll look as bad as if Finley were throwing to him.

I think he'd be more likely to come back with his old running buddy, but there isn't any concrete evidence he didn't re-aggravate his ankle.

i don't think anyone knows what he's capable of at this point. the Bengals have been hollowed out.

 
Andy Dalton completed 22-of-37 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals' 22-6, Week 13 win over the Jets.

Dalton cleared the Ryan Finley line in the Bengals' first win of the season but otherwise mostly just stayed out of the way as the pathetic Jets self destructed. Dalton's longest pass went for 19 yards in the sleepiest of affairs. Although, unlike Finley, Dalton is an actual NFL quarterback, his play continues to fade while his weapons are nothing to call home about. He will not be a recommended QB2 for next week's road trip to Cleveland.

Andy Dalton completed 22-of-38 passes for 262 scoreless yards and one interception in the Bengals' 27-19, Week 14 loss to the Browns.

His interception was returned 61 yards for a pick-six by Denzel Ward. Joe Mixon was the offense for the Bengals. Dalton is one of the worst fantasy quarterbacks and will face the Patriots in Week 15. He won't even be a two-QB league option.

Andy Dalton completed 33-of-56 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns in the Bengals' Week 16 overtime loss to the Dolphins.

The Bengals needed three fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 25-yarder with no time remaining, an onside kick recovery, and a two-point conversion to force this game into overtime after trailing 35-12 with 11 minutes remaining. Dalton was absolutely dealing during this stretch, but the offense went stagnant in overtime and had to punt the ball twice, ultimately losing the game on a last-second field goal. This was a win-win for the Bengals as they played an exciting game but also lost to guarantee the 2020 No. 1 overall pick. They'll close the year out against the Browns, but they are officially on the clock with QB Joe Burrow (or DE Chase Young) being the likely selection.

There are a number of FA QBs in championship week who had cake matchups, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Daniel Jones the other two. If you started one of them congrats.

 
It will be interesting if anyone wants Dalton as their starter next year. It would probably just end up like Flacco in Denver, but there are a few success stories out there.  

For anyone who doesn’t really watch this team every week (congrats!), he has had a pretty drastic drop off in his own play this season.  You can say that he was never great, or blame the oline or new system, but I feel pretty strongly that he has been missing a TON of throws this year that he’s made every previous year. What that means for him in 2020 on a new team and possibly as a backup, I have no idea.  

 
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Bengals are willing to facilitate a trade with Andy Dalton's interests in mind.

Dalton has one year, $17.7 million remaining on his contract with the Bengals, but the two will most likely be parting ways this offseason because the Bengals have the No. 1 overall pick. Cincinnati will likely select LSU QB Joe Burrow and trade Dalton, as long as they can find a suitor. The Bengals ownership doesn't want to ship Dalton to a team he doesn't want to go to as a thank you for being a great leader over the last decade, so we'll have to learn what Dalton's intentions are for 2020 and beyond. If he wants to be a short-term starter and work with a younger quarterback, he'll have a few options. If he wants to be viewed as a long-term starter as soon as he's traded, Dalton can't be picky. Dalton can also be released with zero dead money if there aren't any teams willing to trade for him.

According to The Athletic's Paul Dehner, the Bears "have been in touch" with the Bengals about acquiring Andy Dalton.

The Bears are looking for competition for Mitchell Trubisky, and Dalton would provide just that. Chicago hired OC Bill Lazor this offseason, and Lazor has a familiarity with Dalton when Lazor was the Bengals' QBs coach and later the OC from 2016-2018. Dalton makes a ton of sense for the Bears, but the only issue is Chicago doesn't have many draft picks from which to deal. The early word is the Bengals could be looking for a third-rounder for Dalton. The Bears could try and wait the Bengals out and force Cincinnati to release the 32-year-old.

Gonna suck for any QB who will be with the Pats. Tough shoes to fill and people here in MA will compare everything that QB does to what Brady would have done, blah blah blah....Being the Pats QB is going to be a rough ride at the beginning.

Yep. 

In some ways that's a reason to get a veteran. Perhaps one that's used to criticism.  

But if I'm them and Brady leaves, I'm going for Tanny or Mariota.

Dalton to Tampa makes a lot of sense imo.

 
ESPN's Josina Anderson reports the Bengals are "listening to trade offers" on Andy Dalton.

This doesn't come as a surprise — the Bengals have been open about their willingness to shop Dalton this offseason. With Cincinnati expected to take a quarterback with the No. 1 pick, Dalton is destined to play out the final year of his deal with another team. He's been linked to Chicago and ex-OC Bill Lazor, one of the best paths to Dalton remaining a starter. The Bengals are asking for a third-round pick for Dalton.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports the Bears are "focused on acquiring" Andy Dalton or Nick Foles.

The Bears want to bring Mitchell Trubisky some veteran competition, and it looks like that will happen via trade, not free agency. Teddy Bridgewater and other free agents have been contacted, but they aren't the top priority at the moment. Enter Dalton and Foles who both have connections with Chicago's coaching staff. Either of them would be an upgrade over what we've seen from Trubisky in recent years, but purely based on their current contracts, a trade for Dalton makes more sense. The Bengals have been reportedly asking for a third-round pick in exchange for the Red Rifle.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports Andy Dalton "hasn’t been discussed among the Pats’ immediate plans."

The Bengals are running out of trading partners for Dalton, who will inevitably be replaced by incoming rookie QB Joe Burrow. One of the few starting jobs up for grabs is in New England, but it's unclear who will be brought in to compete against Jarrett Stidham this offseason. At this point, it seems like both Dalton and Cam Newton will have to be released with the trading market close to dried up. Maybe that's when the Patriots address their quarterback need, but it's possible that they go fishing in the 2020 or 2021 NFL Draft. One thing we don't doubt is Bill Belichick having a plan.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Bengals are open to keeping Andy Dalton for the 2020 season.

Rapoport said, "All options are still on the table." The Bengals spent the last few weeks trying to find a trade partner, but there are fewer potential landing spots after all of last week's moves. Cincinnati is still holding out hope that a team like the Patriots come calling, but most around the league believe Dalton is more likely to be released than traded at this point. Because Dalton's contract has no guaranteed money, the Bengals can afford to be patient with their Dalton decision. It's possible that Dalton serves as a veteran mentor to Joe Burrow. It's also possible that he's released this week.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said the team is "keeping all options on the table" as it pertains to Andy Dalton's future.

"I don’t have all the answers," Taylor said on Dalton's status with the team. "Everything changes, so we’re on a week-to-week basis." He also reaffirmed that there are "a lot of unknowns" with the possibility of keeping the 32-year-old veteran as a mentor (and backup) to any rookie quarterback. The Bengals have spent the better part of the offseason searching for suitors to unload Dalton's contract to, but this situation is headed for an outright release if the rest of the league refuses to step to the plate during draft weekend. With no guarantees remaining in his contract, the organization can at least afford to be patient before inevitably parting ways.

Previously Bengals coach Zac Taylor said the team is "keeping all option on the table" as it pertains to Dalton's future, while NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the Bengals are open to keeping their long-time QB. Of course, everyone expects them to take Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick, but there would be far worse backup options than Dalton if he's willing to help mold the rookie. There don't appear to be many, if any, clear-cut starting jobs available for Dalton across the league.

Pretty surprised that the Bengals released him. It really seemed like they were looking forward to having him as a sounding board/mentor to Burrow. 

The team that obviously jumps out is New England as Dalton could/would be the favorite to start there. However, if they are fully committed to Stidham(for some reason) a team that makes a ton of sense to me is Dallas.

They are in a Super Bowl window(in their opinion anyway) and Prescott is both on a 1 year deal, and has only Cooper Rush and a 7th round rookie behind him. As is stands right now, the season is over if Dak goes down, having Dalton to turn to would be an excellent insurance policy.

That Winston contract changes things, though. If I were Dalton I'd take the same # to play with an organization like the Patriots for a year. Would it be shocking to anyone if Stidham had a three TO game. We all know how Billy.B feels about TO's. If ever there was a marriage between a coach that only wanted a game manager at QB and a QB that was meant to be a game manager I think this would be it. Dalton would have the best year in his career. I doubt NE would give it to him but he could probably parlay that into some Tannehill-esque monstrosity of a contract.... maybe JAX in 2021 when the bloom is off Minshew and they have a new coaching regime hungry for a fast turnaround?

I'd also have interest as a Titan. 

How ironic if Tanny faltered and Andy started winning games.
