QB Bailey Zappe, CLE (1 Viewer)

I think I agree with everything you wrote, but not real sure where that leaves the pats. Most likely, Jones gets the job back and does moderately well. We’re not expecting the pats to make a SB run, I’m not projecting them to make the playoffs unless injuries pile up for other teams.
Onlookers mentioned yesterday that Jones didn't look very good when he tried warming up before the game in CLE. He wasn't moving well, he wasn't getting a lot of momentum stepping into his passes, and he just looked "off." I can see them going with Zappe against the Bears, and he'll probably do well again with the defense and running game paving the way to victory.

I think they could be a fringe playoff team (like last year).I think they win 3 out of 4 against CHI-NYJ-IND-NYJ. They probably lose to BUF twice and MIN. But I can see them beating ARI-LV-CIN-MIA. I think they can get to 9-10 wins. Right now, they are half a game out of a playoff spot. I don't think it's crazy to think they are a contender for a wild card spot. The season will be a success if they can start beating could teams instead of just beating up on mediocre ones.
It's crazy to think they aren't a playoff contender right now, I'm not joking about the overall make up of the team right now, anyone can line up and notch a win at QB and I doubt Zappe thinks he is holding that spot for long but for right now, this team can easily allow Jones to fully heal and not rush him back

Disagree, I think Zappe knows he can steal this job with another good performance against Chicago.

Zappe may be better than Jones.

I said what I said.
Last year, Jones completed 82% of his passes, had 3 TD with 0 INT, posting a 142 passer rating with NE scoring 45 points against the Browns.

How’d he do against other bottom feeder defenses? Glad you asked. He completed 73% of his passes with 3 TD and 0 INT, posting a 128 rating with NE scoring 50 points against JAX.

He also completed 67% of his passes with 2 TD and 0 INT WITH a 111 rating with NE scoring 54 points against NYJ.

The point being, it’s easy to look good and stomp on teams that don’t play defense. Those are the types of teams Zappe has faced so far.

One of the main reasons Jones is considered better is he played in a major college program for in a pro style offense. Zappe played at Houston Baptist and Western Kentucky in systems nowhere near pro level against competition that would never see the NFL. He put up crazy offensive numbers last year because he AVERAGED 50 passing attempts per game.

That doesn’t mean he can’t become an NFL QB, it just means he has a lot to learn. NFL teams will see film on him and adjust. He’s done decent so far, but let’s see how he does against more exotic defensive schemes and against good teams.
I just think Zappe has a better arm.

I’m not saying he isn’t raw, and doesn’t hace a long way to go & a lot to learn.

But I could see a scenario where the pats make a switch if Jones upside seems capped, or if he’s struggling.

Jones was better than I expected last year. I even voluntarily ate some crow over it in the in-game topics. This year he’s meh. 5 Ints, 2 TDs - pretty replaceable.

I think at least we can agree that Zappe is a strong hold in dynasty leagues, depending on roster size.
The huge majority of actual football industry people think Jones has a stronger arm and build than Zappe . . . and no one is raving about those things with Jones.

I find it odd that people are so quick to throw Jones under the bus, He had one of the best rookie seasons for a QB, he made the Pro Bowl (sort of), and he led his team to the playoffs. All of those are pretty rare for a rookie.

As already pointed out, just looking at the turnover ratio and nothing else is a pretty soft analysis, especially in a three game sample size with a huge amount of change to the NE system and coaching staff. Jones was on fire against the Ravens through 3 quarters. 8 completions of 20-30 yards. Then Agholor coughed up the ball, a receiver ran the wrong route for a pick, and the wheels came off (4 turnovers late in the game).

Basically, all the anti-Jones stuff is related to one bad quarter of football.

"Zappe knows he can steal this job"

I did mention the Pats '01 before that post for good reason.
Your quote though is difficult to digest because no player in New England thinks for themselves, you know what I mean? Bill Belichick does all the talking for the most part.
I'd love to agree with you but c'mon, Zappe has very little control and is not going to strong arm the Patriots. He'll do what he's told and he'll like it ;)

Also to be considered in the case for Jones is that the team is functioning better in Weeks 4 and 5 than in the prior 3. This is of course a chicken / egg argument, but has to be considered when evaluating performance relatively.
Absolutely. Pats were much more well-oiled machine with zappe

That may have happened anyway as a natural progression for this offense and defense.

But that it coincided definitely works in Zappe’s favor.

I doubt they Wally Pipp Mac Jones, but it’s worth keeping an eye on.
I only think its a conversation because of Bledsoe->Brady. Mac Jones is a Saban baby, and is absolutely perfect at spewing "patriot way" rhetoric. Ironically, I think the schedule worked against Zappe in that it didn't give him any marque matchups while Jones healed. His best case, imo, is stomping the Bears and hoping for team performance regression after Jones reassumes command. But that's not in my agenda, which involves the Pats finishing 12 and 5. :p

If NE beats CHI with Zappe, by that point, the records of the teams he beat will very likely be a combined 5-15 with those defenses anywhere from bad to atrocious. IMO, he should get credit for holding serve, but let's not suggest he went on a run and beat the Bills, Chiefs, and Eagles.

Not a great argument to go away from him. Mac has looked at best like a game manager so far, don't see them swapping out one game manager when they have one that is hot.

Just curious if you watched NE's games this year. Jones ranks #3 in the league in depth of target and is higher than Josh Allen and Mahomes. 20% of Jones' completions have been 20+ yards down field. Guys like Allen and Mahomes are at 15%. NE has been trying to get away from the dink and dunk stigma in favor of chunk plays. IIRC, NE ranks #1 in the league in completions that traveled 20 yards or more downfield.

I've seen a couple of games, we don't get them all where I live.

Really tough to compare him vs Mahomes and Allen, who average like 50+ attempts a game.
I haven't been impressed at all with his play this year.

Mike Reiss, the gold standard in terms of NE news, had an article up today discussing the timeline for Jones’ return and that Zappe’s play allows the Pats to let Jones fully recover in the interim. He does not mention anything about a QB competition. LINK

They’ll be in contention the last few weeks, I just have them projected to miss behind the bengals, 2nd team from the south, and chargers. Heck, the jets might even make it at their current rate.

I’m hopeful that I can keep starting Zappe over Tom Brady in SF. (Things I never thought I’d say) but most likely he’ll ride the bench for the foreseeable future. Definitely holding in that format.

Tom Curran chimes in...Curran is as good as it gets so always interesting to see his angle:

If Mac comes back and looks like crap, it’s Zappe-mania.

No doubt...Mac needs to come out of the gate strong...if not, Zappe fev-ah will run rampant!

This is what is known as a glittering generality. There is no context given here at all.

Zappe has beaten the #30 and #32 ranked defenses. Geno Smith had 320/2 with a 132 rating against DET. Carson Wentz put up 337/3 against them. Joe Flacco lit up the Browns for 307/4. But Zappe . . . ZOW!!!!!

Someone is going to have to go up against the Bills twice (#1 ranked defense), Bengals (11), and Vikings (12) soon. It's unlikely whoever the NE QB is will be scoring 30+ points with 3 TD and 0 INT with the team coasting to easy 3 TD victories as front runners in those games.

I don't want to keep pounding the same drum, but Jones had one really bad quarter of football (3 picks against the Ravens). That's what is driving his stats down (and people's perceptions). Factoring out that one quarter of action and those 3 picks at the end of the Ravens game, Jones' stats wouldn't be spectacular, but he would have a 93.2 passer rating.

As I mentioned previously, Brady had a 4-game losing streak early in Year 2 as a starter (2002) . . . which aligns almost exactly with where Jones is now in his career. NE scored 14-13-10-16 points in those games and Brady had 9 turnovers, was sacked 10 times, and had a 69-passer rating. Clearly NE should have made the switch to Rohan Davey at that point when they fell under .500 . . . and they didn't even make the playoffs that year!

If Zappe starts and has a game with a 40% completion rate, 3 picks, 5 sacks, and a 27 rating and NE gets smoked 47-3, then what? Would that be the end of Zappe Fever? Does that mean he should never start another NFL game?

I get it, Zappe looked good the past couple of weeks . . . but so would many other QB against those tomato can defenses. Zappe probably earned himself another start, but Jones will most likely step back in as the starter when he is fully healthy. Sure, if Jones forgot how to play football and has multiple games where he is the clear reason that the team is losing, then sure, NE would consider going back to Zappe. But if Jones had an isolated bad game on the road against the Bills? Not sure that would merit him getting benched. Lots of QB haven't fared well against the Bills and BUF has beaten up on plenty of teams.

ZAPPEMANIA!
:pickle:

Mike Reiss and Greg Bedard were both on the radio within the past hour and essentially said the same thing. There is no QB controversy. The starting job is clearly Mac's, and it's just a matter of when will he be healthy enough to play. Zappe has done a good job the past two weeks, but the defense and the mediocre opponents were a much bigger part of the story than Zappe. They both indicated that the players and coaches are in alignment on the situation, and it's clearly Mac's team. Fans can stomp their feet about it, and @Hot Sauce Guy can scream ZAPPEMANIA! all he wants. Maybe this is all a diversion, but it would take the whole team being in on it to be misleading the media.

We can discuss this again should Mac come back and lay eggs across multiple games, but as of now, there is no talk of Jones losing his job. There was also discussion on Jones making the trip to CLE, and had he looked better when he got to CLE, they could have cleared and started him. Bottom line, he wasn't 100%, and they are waiting for him to be pretty close to normal health wise to send him back out on the field.

I have Zappe on my taxi squad in superflex dynasty, chucked him on the trade block to test the waters and see if anyone was drinking the kool-aid, results weren't promising

@Hot Sauce Guy can scream ZAPPEMANIA! all he wants.
I just do it because it's fun.

ZAPPEMANIA!!!!

See? Super entertaining. :D
I call it Zappe Fever, and I've got it! :boxing:
It's getting a bit out of hand. Zappe Hour. Don't worry, be Zappe. Zappe and you know it. I’ve got Zappe fever. and the only prescription is more cowbell.
That's the spirit! I knew you'd get on board, @Anarchy99!

Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right
To think about the girl you love and hold her tight
So Zappe togetherrrrrr

Sunday Monday Zappe days
Tuesday Wednesday Zappe days
Thursday Friday Zappe days
Saturday what a day
Rockin' all week for you

Sadly, this is a bit fun and addictive. When you dig into the Partridge Family catalog, you know you've gone too far.

Hello world here's a song that we're singing
Come on get Zappe
A whole lotta lovin' is what we'll be bringing
We'll make you Zappe

Travelin' along there's a song that we're singin'
Come on get Zappe
A whole lotta lovin' is what we'll be bringin'
We'll make you Zappe
We'll make you Zappe

We had a dream we'd go travelin' together
And spread a little lovin', then we keep moving on
Something always happens whenever we're together
We get a Zappe feeling when we're singing a song

Trav'lin' along, here's a song that we're singing
Come on get Zappe
A whole lotta lovin' is what we'll be bringing
We'll make you Zappe
Come on get Zappe

That’s it. The matter is settled. Zappe shall be the patriots starting QB from here forward.

Instead of arguing for/against Zappy Days, just go pick him up and then make a lowball trade for Mac Jones, whose owner is probably as down on him as you are.

I predict this may be the longest topic on this forum at some point. Josh Gordon may finally be off the hook.
Doubt it. Mac will come back and Zappe will go back to the bench. I remember back in the day when Jimmy G. started when Brady was suspended. He was going to be the next big thing (without the catchy name). It took him 3 years to have a full season under his belt as a starter. How long is the Jimmy G. thread?

Zappe might not ever get a shot as a regular starter anywhere. Zappe would need to be a long-term starter . . . and it's very unlikely he would get a dozen chances to do something in the league like Gordon did.

After Mac returns and fumbles twice, Zappe is a lock.

Isn’t Zappe also throwing to receivers that would never see the NFL? He also doesn’t have 5* OL blocking for him either.

Look at the starting qbs in the league, just as many Zappes succeed as the Mac Jones’s.

The Gordon thread is 450 pages long. Only 448 to go.
You do know that was tongue-in-cheek, right? I mean cmon - how many ways can we possibly work Zappe into a sentence?

I’m somewhat un-Zappe about that, tbh.
A 10-year career could add 150 pages to this thread.
For now, I believe he is just Zappe to be here.

Mac Jones was throwing to those same WR's. Also throwing deeper. Zappe and Jones show timing, touch, and good reads for the short time they have started.

I don’t have a dog in this fight. NE would rather have Jones succeed though as they have more invested in him.

Isn’t Zappe also throwing to receivers that would never see the NFL? He also doesn’t have 5* OL blocking for him either.

Look at the starting qbs in the league, just as many Zappes succeed as the Mac Jones’s.
Mac Jones was throwing to those same WR's. Also throwing deeper. Zappe and Jones show timing, touch, and good reads for the short time they have started.
I don’t have a dog in this fight. NE would rather have Jones succeed though as they have more invested in him.
Once the season starts, It's whomever is the best. R Kraft is going to pay out x amount for the team's salary. If they are
winning with a practice squad QB, nobody cares.

Zappe may be better than Jones.

I said what I said.

May want to ask Dallas. I agree with the take, but teams don’t want the bad optics of benching higher priced players.

I don't know what you meant by this, but there has been one other QB drafted from Western Kentucky (Mike White) in the history of the NFL, and no other QB drafted from Houston Baptist. On that front, I can't say that guys from the same programs as Zappe succeed as often as first round picks.

Zappe was the 137th pick in the draft. In the past 20 drafts, the only players that played more than a few games as a starter drafted at that point or later were Dan Orlovsky (145), Gardner Minshew (178), Tyrod Taylor (180), Derek Anderson (213), Matt Cassel (230), and Ryan Fitzpatrick (250) . . . and I wouldn't exactly call them successful.

You will have to elaborate and explain what you were referencing by using the phrase "just as many Zappes" and what "success" would translate to.

That’s what should happen in a vacuum but that’s not what really happens in reality. Teams don’t like to throw away first round picks. Jones is getting his job back when healthy - and I have Zappe rostered on one team and Jones on none.

Jones is getting his job back because is the better QB. Teams have moved on from first round QB picks and fairly quickly-Rosen and Haskins come to mind.
Edited to add-The Colts also moved on from Wentz. That was a 1st and a 3rd
