yup. huge fan. hard to discuss him right now, because the browns killed this guy. 3 coaching changes in his first 3yrs... making him play 3/4 a season while basically paralyzed (in QB terms) in his 4th.
had all the tools to be a VERY good qb... but the browns brown'd him.
if he's fully healthy, i would 100% take him on my team if Im qb needy. he's going to starving to prove ppl wrong, and I think he will. will likely never be elite, but he can be a good qb in this league.

These are good points. Panthers & Seahawks are both QB needy and have the weapons to help him succeed.

I don’t know if we can blame all of his woes on the Brown’s. They got rid of Hue, that was a good move for Baker! Supposedly Freddie was who Baker wanted. Just didn’t know Baker would show up as “Fat Baker” that season.
Baker has hurt himself quite a bit as well. Definitely been our best QB since the return. I supported Baker and rooted for him once we drafted him, but I was never a big fan of his arrogance.
He has been humbled quite a bit and will probably work very hard to prove the naysayers wrong. I agree with you, will probably never be elite but can be good to very good.

I would suggest "should have been humbled". Whether that is the case or not may play a significant role in what happens next.

He gutted out last year and two many downgrade him for that broken performance IMO. I think he can be in the “Kirk Cousins” tier of quarterbacking which is good enough to win games if the surrounding team is talented. He does need a dose of humble pie and hopefully this off-season provided it. Seattle seems like a decent fit with a run first mentality and good pass catching options. His deep ball skills need work but I think with a strong run game he can thrive off play action and be capable enough to compete. It will be interesting to see what happens to him this off-season.Soulfly3 said:

SEA does feel like the most logical fit at this stage of the game. The problem I think with Mayfield is that his personality is that of a gunslinger but his ability is that of a game manager.

Just grabbed him at 10.11 in a sf puppy as my third qb. Felt like a great value compared to where other options are going. Once he’s traded to Seattle/ Carolina, he’s probably a 4th rounder in that format. Twitter speculation includes giants and lions as well. Not buying those rumors, personally.

That's one way of looking at it. Then again, why would anyone assume they didn't check things out thoroughly beforehand? Haslam is a bit quick to take action, but the FO seems rock-steady to me. Maybe they think he's HOF material and the draft compensation is fair (How many picks would you give for 1.1 if he were in the draft?). Maybe they think it unlikely that any suspension would last beyond 2022. So yeah, right now it looks like an enormous price to pay. How is it gonna look in 2023, 2024, ...?

The only reason Cleveland even had a chance at Watson in the first place we because of these allegations. Do you think Watson is coming to Cleveland if they were not the only ones to offer $230 Million guaranteed ? No other team was willing to do that in the face of this situation so the Browns had 1 chance to get an elite QB and sure it was a major risk but they had 0% chance to get Watson if he was squeaky clean because other teams would offered up all the money too.
Cleveland is a place elite FA's do not come we couldn't even get star basketball players to come play with LeBron. We had to traded for Kevin Love we drafted Kyrie Irving. The reason LeBron left the first time is we couldn't get anyone good to come join him.

Random thought, what if the Browns had done the exact same trade for Russell Wilson I wonder what the reaction would be? Wilson is older, but has no off field issues, and has played at a higher level than Watson for the most part.jm192 said:

Arguably Watson went for more, depending on how much you value the players included in the Watson deal. Personally, I don't think any of them are particularly valuable. Probably on par with the 3rd and 2 4ths.
ETA: If Seattle was deadset on getting players for Wilson, would it have made sense for the Browns to send Mayfield in a Wilson deal? Possibly avoiding all this Mayfield dilemma, and likely sending Watson to...Atlanta? Carolina?
Obviously, that didn't happen, but I'm curious what Browns fans would have thought/preferred?

You're REALLY misrepresenting my point.
The reason the world tends to care about red flags is the concern for recurrence. The guy that has 24 sexual assault allegations seems like he's probably high risk for having another occurrence in his career. Not saying he will, but that should be a concern.
Some people learn from their mistakes and don't ever risk their football careers again. Some people are more like Josh Gordon.
So, it's not a "what if..." There's a real chance of future trouble.
And to be clear, I never came in here and said TERRIBLE TRADE or they shouldn't have done it. Someone had a snarky response about "How dare the Browns try to get an elite QB and try to win for once" and I pointed out the concerns and criticisms are about the red flags.
Some people don't think red flags matter. The Browns clearly do not. Some people do.

When I consider this point, I find that much of it comes down to our individual assessment of his behavior. To me, it adds up to a guy looking for sex, which shouldn't be farfetched to someone who has known or been a guy in his 20s. If, however, I felt he was anything else, as many people have concluded, your future concerns would certainly be more important and/or scary. (That's my take on it all and I can definitely be wrong.)

I feel like SEA has probably been in the same mode all along.
I would call it the, "Mayfield for a year? Yeah, maybe. But we aren't going to pay his entire salary. And we probably aren't willing to give up much for your backup QB...... who is looking more and more like their 3rd string QB every day. OR we could just stick with what we have and get kicked in the teeth for a year which will likely get us a draft pick where we can draft someone we want way, way more than Mayfield in the first place. On second thought.....". It took CLE months to figure out that they were going to have eat a large portion of the Mayfield contract to get a deal done so who knows when they will actually get a gauge on his value across the league right now. Wasn't there a rumor not that long ago that the majority of GM's thought Baker would eventually end up simply getting released? IF, a big IF, that's true then CLE should have accepted a backup long snapper by now if the new team would take on ANY of his salary at all.
Is there anyone that really believes these "rumors" are anything more than the CLE front office whispering into the ears of reporters who have nothing else to write/talk about this time of year? If any team was completely sold on Baker being their guy the trade would have already happened, probably no later than during the draft. That doesn't mean he won't get traded it just means CLE is realizing with each passing day if Baker isn't in training camp the value he has for another team on a one year contract starts eroding by the hour.
I say all this and I'm rooting for Baker to do well. And I have no animosity toward CLE for swinging for the fences to get this talented team deep into the playoffs even if there were some risks involved. But CLE made the cardinal mistake by treating Baker like he wasn't an NFL QB BEFORE you traded him away. Feels to me like CLE is trying to un-ring a bell at this point.

Probably not instantly, no, but once he gets acclimated again there's no reason to thing he'll have 'lost' his football ability. He should be able to get back to his slightly over .500 winning ways soon enough.

Has to have shifted toward Seattle/Carolina in the past 2 weeks. Don't know how to look this stuff up.
Jimmy and Baker ending up in Carolina and Seattle feels like #### that hasn't happened yet that just needs to happen. Browns eat all the salary and get a 3rd and a 6th to Seattle. Then right before TC, Carolina pulls the trigger on a 4th and 6th to Seattle. No inter-division Jimmy/SF stuff. Carolina and the Browns both have cap space.
Make it happen so we can all get on with our lives.

If Watson gets a full year, I’m expecting the Browns to be the front runner. It’s gonna be ugly… It’s gonna be super awkward… But I have a feeling they’ll get it done.

I saw that this morning. Josina Anderson versus Ian Rappaport. Rap Seems a little more reliable, but who really knows what’s going on here. Could be a reporter offloaded something that was wrong and is now trying to save face, or it could be that they’re both being fed different flavors of BS by the team.

Great value for Carolina, but I kinda hate this move a little, as I was really interested in seeing Matt Corral start this season. Mayfield was seemingly a better fit in Seattle in my opinion. This is probably good news for DJ Moore and CMC though. Say what you want about Mayfield, but he's a major upgrade from what they had a year ago.
From a win/loss standpoint, I doubt this is enough to make the Panthers a playoff team, or save Matt Rhule's job, but again, it should be better than last year at least. Anything that makes it less likely Sam Darnold and especially PJ Walker don't see the field is a win.
How many QBs will they carry? One would think Mayfield and Corral are locks, so is Darnold getting cut, or is Walker, or both?
ETA: That Browns/Panthers game in week 1 should be fun.

Panthers acquired QB Baker Mayfield from the Browns in exchange for a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick.
Additionally, Mayfield has agreed to a $3.5 million pay cut in the final year of his deal this upcoming season, while the Browns will absorb $10.5 million and the Panthers around $5 million.

Agreed. Baker will get the ball to DJ. It appears the Panthers are only paying 1/3 of his new salary for 2022. So even better.
Kinda surprised that more teams weren't interested at this low of a price Mayfield is a middle of the pack starter, who went for a conditional pick, and only costs 5 million this season.
