QB Brock Purdy, SF (4 Viewers)

Akash A making sense:

I really think the #49ers might get boat raced in this matchup.

It almost makes sense to roll out Brock Purdy vs. Cardinals, rather than throw him out to the wolves against the Rams (and their #1 defense).

Could you imagine the discussion if Purdy makes the start and looks rusty against a really good defense?

Mac’s in rhythm, makes sense to find a slightly easier opponent to roll out Purdy when he’s still bothered by the toe and coming off 2 months not playing a game.

Steve Young on Brock:

"At some point, Brock, I would suspect, would say, 'Hey, enough. I'm playing,'" Young said during an interview on Bay Area radio station KNBR. "And those conversations, I've got to believe, have happened. If Brock could go out, I think Brock would force it."

Young believes that it's likely Purdy himself who doesn't feel ready to return, as he's still not at full strength. Fortunately, backup quarterback Mac Jones has played well in his absence, helping San Francisco to a 6-3 record.

"I feel like if Brock could somehow play, he would force the issue," Young added. "I would. I would force it publicly, I would force it privately, I would make it happen. And so, it must be—and I know Brock—I would suspect, he can't make it happen because he's not healthy enough."

It’s got to be turf toe. This is the same timeline on every turf toe injury. Purdy isn’t scared of going iut less than perfect, it’s a serious injury.

Turf toe can be a serious injury. We saw it with Burrow, as he had full ligament tears (i.e., grade three turf toe) that required surgery. That put Burrow out for 3 months.

Grade 2 turf toe has a recovery of 4-6 weeks. After tomorrow’s game, Purdy will be at the end of that period. So, if he’s not playing in week 11, I think he had a setback that they’re not telling us about that reset his recovery. Or, he was misdiagnosed from the beginning and probably should’ve had surgery.

I think he plays this Sunday.

When asked whether Purdy will run the first-team offense and if the 49ers are building him up to start against the Cardinals, Shanahan simply replied, "Yes."

Purdy has been gradually ramping up his practice sessions over the past few weeks. How has he looked so far?

"I think each week, it's gone better, with last week being the best," Shanahan said. "Each week has been different. So, if he takes a big step forward this week, like he did last week, he should have a good chance to play."

Shanahan noted that there isn't a difficult decision at quarterback given Mac Jones' strong performance in Purdy's absence. It's purely been about Purdy's health.

"He's (Jones) been great, but we've got a lot of confidence in Brock, and we know Brock will play at a high level, too, as long as he's healthy," Shanahan said.

Regarding whether Purdy might be limited in games upon his return, Shanahan emphasized that the quarterback will not play unless he can perform at full capacity.

"If you've got to tell a guy to not be mobile and stay out of situations, it's kind of hard to be successful," Shanahan said. "When a guy gets out on that field, he's got to react and play. And if he doesn't feel that way, which I'll watch from practice and talking to him, then he won't go."

Matt Maiocco:

Based on the early portion of 49ers practice, it indeed looks as if the 49ers are preparing Brock Purdy to return to his starting role Sunday at the Cardinals.

He took 1st team reps and was 1st in individual drills.

I have Daniel Jones on bye.
Looking at JJM vs Chi or Rodgers vs Cinn.
If Purdy is back is he above these two? He's missed some time.

I know this isn't WDIS, but this news has me really considering him over Nix. I just don't think the Broncos can play the "we'll start trying in the second half" game against KC, so it could be a slog or just get out of hand. And if he's really, truly back healthy, Purdy has most of his weapons back at his disposal.

I can add him off waivers and have contemplated it over starting Caleb or Darnold.

Going up against each other, Brissett or Purdy? Brissett would seem to have the better matchup as far as pass defense goes.

I have the exact same decision to make in a redraft league. Nearly every week I choose wrong between Nix and Caleb and someone dropped Purdy so I grabbed him

Trying to decide between Purdy and Mayfield. I thought Bills was a good matchup but everything I read suggests Mayfield will struggle this week so, even though it's his first game back, considering Purdy

Greg Cosell on Brock Purdy:

“The thing about Purdy that is different than Mac Jones is that he has a very aggressive mindset as a thrower, more so than Mac Jones. He will turn it loose. At times it can result in forced throws, but other times it results in outstanding window throws vs zone coverage — which is an absolute strength of his game.”

From Twitter:

Everyone saw this touchdown and immediately gave credit to Kyle Shanahan for drawing up this unreal genius play that left CMC wide open. But the people that actually knew what they were watching (like @Graham_SFN) called out the brilliance of Brock in the play.

Interestingly, the pass that looked like Purdy’s easiest of the afternoon — a 9-yard score to an all-by-himself McCaffrey in the second quarter — highlighted his smarts and instincts. As McCaffrey ran to the sideline he pointed to Purdy and then pointed his right index finger at the side of the helmet. The message: That took brains.

“That wasn’t the play,” McCaffrey explained.

McCaffrey was supposed to run a different route on a play on which he was what Juszczyk termed him a “last-ditch outlet.” But he changed course mid-play when he recognized that he’d been dropped in coverage. As McCaffrey broke outside, freelancing, he raised both hands and Purdy moved off his primary reads. McCaffrey caught the pass at the 3-yard line and jogged into the end zone.

The mental side is what Brock is elite top 5 at and why with average physical skills (other than pocket mobility and rushing ability which he's elite at) flashes top 10 franchise QB abilities. This is also why Sam Darnold and Mac Jones picked the 49ers (and why we'll get to pick from the best backups every year) - to come and learn from Brock in terms of weekly prep and the mental side of the game.

This is also what advanced data and statistics tries to normalize in terms of really analyzing the play, schemes, and what really happened out there on a play instead of simply looking at the basic stats of wins, yards, TDs, and INTs and ranking the players.

You have been spot on about Brock from day 1. He is a great QB despite his physical limitations. Like all QBs, he needs a functional OL and the luck of good health, but dude has lowkey been putting up elite metrics for a while, and for some reason few have picked up on that. Brock is the #1 reason why I am not giving up on Pearsall (in redraft).

How often does each QB throw 20+ air yards downfield and what percentage of those throws are catchable?

Here's the chart (hint, look alllllll the way to the right 😉 for comparison, Mac is lower left quadrant)

Brock Purdy is going to chuck the ball down the field, and there's about a 70% chance it'll hit you in the hands. It's easy to see why the 49ers are head over heels about their QB.

John Lynch on Brock Purdy’s return against the Cardinals:

“He just handles himself so well, and he kind of puts confidence into our team. He looked healthy. He didn’t use his legs as much, but that was kind of what the game called for. There’s always going to be an acclamation period, it was a great game to get his confidence and rhythm back.”
