QB Daniel Jones, IND (1 Viewer)

This is a discussion forum. I am one of those discussing Danny Dimes. I happened to have recently acquired him in dynasty, and introduced that related  subject to the Daniel Jones topic, a topic about the player I just acquired, with context for why I acquired that player. The player who this discussion is about.

You have now posted 3x, 100% off topic, purely to call me out personally because for some absurd reason you don't approve of my addition to this discussion.

I recommend simply ignoring discussions you aren't interested in for future posts. You'll probably enjoy the forums more. But make no mistake: my post was 100% on-topic. The topic of Daniel Jones. For whom there was a positive news link, which made me optimistic about the player I just acquired.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk, and welcome to ignore.
Your only contribution to the discussion has been a rundown of your roster.  Which isn't a contribution at all.  Nobody cares about your roster.

If that point hasn't gotten through to you by now, then clearly we are all wasting our time.  By my count I'm the third person to make an attempt.

Daniel Jones completed 26-of-41 passes for 279 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Giants' 26-16, Week 1 loss to the Steelers Monday night.

He also led the team with 22 rushing yards on six attempts, as Saquon Barkley was completely bottled up for six yards on 15 carries. Jones took three sacks. He tossed a total dime to Darius Slayton over the top of the defense for a 41-yard touchdown in the second quarter for his first score and later hit Slayton again in the last couple minutes of the fourth quarter for the other score. On one of Jones' interceptions, he was hit on the throw in the red zone and was picked off by DE Cameron Heyward at the goal line as he tried to contort his body while throwing. Jones flashes glimpses of brilliance as a playmaker but too often makes silly mistakes. He remains a work in progress ahead of a Week 2 date with the Giants.

I actually thought played pretty well against a nasty Steelers D.  I see bigger things ahead for Dimes and this O

Daniel Jones completed 25-of-40 passes for 241 scoreless yards and one interception in the Giants' 17-13, Week 2 loss to the Bears.

He rushed for 21 yards. Jones lost both Sterling Shepard (toe) and Saquon Barkley (knee) to significant injuries in the second quarter, and the offense didn't stand much of a chance against the Bears' talent-laden defense. It's just a game to forget for Jones, but he's going to have to become the centerpiece of the offense moving forward with Barkley expected to be diagnosed with a season-ending torn ACL. The 49ers come to East Rutherford next week but will be missing both Nick Bosa (knee) and Richard Sherman (I.R.) for that one. Jones will still be nothing more than a two-QB league play.

he just doesn't seem to have 'it' going for him.

probably a half-decent backup QB in this league but with every failing game he's cementing Dave Gettleman's departure at the end of the season

Second-year breakout watch: 5 players who look set for a breakout year, 5 players who have taken a step back

Excerpt:

QB Daniel Jones, New York Giants

Jones has been one of the bigger surprises two weeks into the 2020 season. The Giants might be 0-2, but their starting quarterback is producing at a top-10 level. After producing a 65.9 PFF grade that ranked 24th in the NFL last year, Jones has earned a 78.7 PFF grade through two games in 2020, placing him 10th among qualifying quarterbacks. His Week 1 PFF grade of 82.1 was the highest of his career, and his Week 2 PFF grade of 68.9 was higher than eight of his 13 games in 2019.

Jones' biggest flaw as a rookie was how often he put the ball in harm's way. From forced throws to fumbles, he gave the defense way too many opportunities to make a play. His 5.5% turnover-worthy play rate was the second-worst in the NFL, ahead of only Kyle Allen.

Jones has recorded a turnover-worthy play on just 2% of his pass attempts so far this year, the 10th-best rate in the league, and a lot of that is down to an improved decision-making process.

Jones was a fearless and aggressive player under pressure as a rookie. Sometimes it would result in an incredible big-time throw, but more often than not, it led to poor decisions and abysmal ball security. This year, we've only seen a couple of those bad decisions made under pressure, and he's fumbled the ball just once — a far cry from the 17 fumbles in 13 games that we saw from him as a first-year player.

The aggressive and risky throws are no longer popping up as regularly as they did in 2019. Some of that can be attributed to the more conservative nature of the new offense, but still a positive sign.

There's still a lot of room for improvement, but the fact he currently is one of four to rank both in both negatively graded throw rate and positively graded throw rate — while having the second-highest rate of dropbacks under pressure at 41% — is a promising sign.

Daniel Jones completed 17-of-32 passes for 179 yards and an interception in the Giants' Week 3 loss to the 49ers.

Jones had a fumble as well on a bad pitch to Evan Engram on a reverse. Turnovers were a major issue as a rookie, and he's off to a bad start in 2020 with them, too. Through 16 career games, Jones has 16 interceptions and 20 fumbles, although not all of them were lost. For Jones to be a locked-in franchise quarterback, he needs to clean things up. For fantasy purposes, Jones' team-high 49 rushing yards bailed him out from an even worse performance. With Sterling Shepard and Saquon Barkley out, Jones' QB2 streamer appeal is suspect. The Giants head to L.A. to play the Rams next week.

Daniel Jones completed 23-of-36 passes for 190 yards and an interception in the Giants' Week 4 loss to the Rams, adding six rushes for 45 yards.

The Giants haven't scored a touchdown over the past two games. The Rams knew what was coming throughout this game, which doesn't come as a surprise with the constant criticism of Jason Garrett's vanilla offensive game plans. Jones' rushing prowess make him interesting in superflex and 2-QB formats. He gets the Cowboys' abominable defense in Week 5, meaning streaming advocates will be forced to talk about Jones as a viable fantasy option.

Yeah, it's Jason Garrett's fault.

Reminds me of Tebow.  Can surprise you with his legs and he shines like fools gold after he dug you a hole that he gets 4 downs and prevent defense to scramble and make plays through.  Giants will be back in the QB market in April if they're smart.

It's the same thing every game; until he can learn how to sense pressure he can't take the next step. He's still also plagued by poor decision-making in and out of the pocket... again with a proper offseason/training camp those things might be solvable, but can anyone say camps will be normal next year?

I can't understand how Haskins has been benched already but Danny Dimes gets full support from the Giants. They've both been atrocious. You could argue Jones has been worse. Race card maybe?

why even post that BS cloppbeast? really not even worth quoting that, should edit that out. haskins has been horrible. jones has been, at least statistically, showing signs of life going back to last season. there isn't even any reason to compare the two.

Agreed. Please keep this forum to just NFL. If that's an angle you want to pursue, please discuss it in the political forum. Thanks.

Daniel Jones completed 20-of-33 passes for 222 scoreless yards in the Giants' 37-34, Week 5 loss to the Cowboys.

He rushed one time for -1 yards. Even against the league's worst defense, Jones still couldn't produce a touchdown. He's now gone four straight games without throwing or rushing for a score, and this was actually his first game without an interception, though he did lose a sack-fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Dallas. And Jones had a touchdown throw to Darius Slayton called back on a ticky-tack OPI against Damion Ratley. Jones has got to be in danger of losing his job. He's already fumbled four times and tossed five picks through five games. The Giants face Washington in Week 6.

I'll say this: this is the best he's looked over a full game in quite some time. You saw the underlying talent when he could actually sense pressure, but you also saw the mistakes and inability to protect the ball also. He'll get a stretch of bad secondaries he can prop his numbers a bit on, but the Trevor Lawrence Watch in NY is very real.

Daniel Jones completed 12-of-19 passes for 112 yards, one score, and one interception in the Giants' Week 6 win over Washington, adding 74 yards on seven carries.

Jones threw a perfectly placed ball to Darius Slayton in the first half that resulted in the Giants' only offensive score of the day. Their other trip to the end zone came on a fumble recovery that was taken to the house. Jones didn't do much as a passer but had multiple impressive runs including a 49-yarder that set up a Graham Gano field goal later in the drive. The Giants are on a short week now as they face the Eagles on Thursday Night Football in four days. Jones' ability as a rusher makes him a high-end QB2 but his lack of passing production greatly caps his upside.

Daniel Jones completed 20-of-30 passes for 187 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the Giants' 22-21, Week 7 loss to the Eagles, adding four carries for 92 additional yards.

Jones also lost a game-ending fumble on a drive where the Giants were facing long odds of getting into field goal range. It was a bad play — Jones was oddly casual in the pocket and didn't feel the pressure — but the game would have been close to over had Evan Engram not committed a horrifying drop on 3rd-and-7 with 2:09 remaining. The G-Men would have been close to being able to run out the clock. Engram was also the culprit on Jones' interception, allowing the ball to clang off his hands. Jones butchered his best play of the night, breaking free for a would-be 88-yard touchdown run on a read option in the third quarter only to face plant at the eight-yard line. Thankfully for the Giants, they were able to score four plays later. Jones now has three touchdowns over his past two games after going four weeks without a score, but he still isn't making enough plays for his moribund team. The Bucs are a highly concerning Week 8 matchup.

I fell out of my chair laughing when Jones got tripped up by the Turf Monster on that 80-yard run.

If that play isn't symbolic of the 2020 NFC Least, nothing is.

Didn’t watch the game.  Saw the box score and thought, “How the #### does he have an 80 yard run and no rushing tds?”  Track it down on YouTube within minutes, followed by total spit take reaction.

A total stiff... hopefully this team loses out and turns the page on him
He's not a stiff. He's just a replacement-level QB, interchangeable with a dozen other guys who you would love to have as your backup but would not want to be starting more than a couple games a year for you.

Daniel Jones completed 25-of-41 passes for 256 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Giants' 25-23, Week 8 loss to the Bucs Monday night.

He rushed for 20 yards on three attempts. Jones' 256 passing yards go down as his most since Week 1, but he was mostly bad in this one and should've thrown two or three more interceptions. Turnovers have always been Jones' problem, as he tends to make some of the dumbest decisions we see week in and week out at the quarterback position, constantly making idiotic throws into coverage. Darius Slayton bailed him out late in the fourth quarter on a drive where Jones ended it with a perfect throw to Golden Tate for a 19-yard score. Jones' throw on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt to tie the game, however, was way off the mark to Dion Lewis, who was open in the end zone. Jones just isn't very good and is probably flirting with getting benched. The Giants go to Washington in Week 9.

He won't get benched because Giants don't really have a vet to take over.

First off, this "Dimes" nickname has to be stripped away. There were multiple, dare I say "WIDE OPEN", opportunities for game-changing dimes last night and he failed to deliver on all of them.

Daniel Jones seems to be the single-most contributing factor in keeping the Giants from winning this weak division. Defense plays hard and ranks high, RBs are exceptionally adequate (😋), TE is solid, WRs can get open... just need an accurate QB that makes better/quicker decisions... but I guess that last part is the hardest role to fill in the NFL.

the better/quicker decisions is the key determinant for success as an NFL QBs

how fast they profess information, make decisions and get the ball out

rn he doesn’t do that well

has the arm (maybe not the hands) to be a good QB - you see flashes of greatness

but ball security is a big problem for him

21 INTs and 23 Fumbles in 1.5 years

gotta get better there as a starting point

He reminds me of Kyle Boller.

He reminds me of Kyle Boller.
the 2 point try (which maybe should have been DPI) is the perfect example of what’s wrong with him

that ball HAS to come out quick and leading his receiver to the flag

the db is man to man and is nowhere close to being on time bc he’s looping around the second level trying to stay with Lewis in motion

the execution was perfect, it worked just the way they drew it up - right up until Danny hesitated to pull the trigger

Fully with you.

And as a Steelers fan, you can almost live with the INTs as long as he can offset it by hitting those home runs.

ikr

in his younger days Statpadford made a lot of reckless throws but he offset it with WTHWT thread the needle bullets

would also trust Megatron to win 50/50 balls

lotta fun though perhaps not winning style RL football

with Jones you get none of the upside and a QB who makes bad decisions, makes poor throws, lacks an internal clock regulating his pocket presence

he is young. he def could develop. but the ball security stuff was predicted by many before he was drafted bc of the small hands. dunno seems hard to fix that part.

guy looks brilliant at times but super inconsistent

He doesn't see the field at all. Tate is rightfully upset. But he was missing other WIDE OPEN receivers all night. So limited throwing downfield. And obviously his ball security issues are well documented.

Seems like a foregone conclusion he's getting replaced this offseason. There's just no upside there to go into year 3 with him as starter.

The criticism in this topic is fair. The bad things described were bad. However Jones showed a lot of positives in this game as well. Especially that final drive where up until the failed 2PAT he was masterful. The 4th down conversions were great.

and one also must acknowledge that on 2 bombs that should have been TDs, the receiver blew it.

Om the 1st one, Slayton slowed and looked for the ball 10 yards too early. Had he run his route that ball drops into his lap for a long TD.

On the 2nd, the deep post route, the receiver just lost the ball. He had coverage beat. If he runs to the middle of the end zone it’s an easy 6 on a great throw.

As frustrating as it was for FF owners, those weren’t on Jones. He should have had a much better night.

The pressure Ints were inexcusable. But on the final drive he threw one away in the same kind of pressure.

Given the ragtag nature of that OL & team, I’m not as sure the Giants give up on him just yet. He might get beat out next camp, but I think he gets a chance to compete for the job.

Daniel Jones completed 23-of-34 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown in the Giants' 23-20, Week 9 loss to Washington.

Jones "added" six carries for four yards. With Golden Tate suspended by the team, Jones for some reason heated up his connection with UDFA Austin Mack for 4/72 but didn't find any other pass catchers for more than 50 yards. Jones avoided "the big one" — this was his first turnover-free performance all year — though he did fumble twice. He just didn't lose either of them. Yet to establish any semblance of upside this season, Jones will remain best relegated to the lowest reaches of the QB2 ranks in Week 10 against the Eagles.

- Rotoworld
Now 80% of Daniel Jones' wins have come against Washington. Jones can beast vs. teams worse than the Giants.
