Wilson had a no trade clause as well, looming possible suspension is probably the biggest reason for not getting a higher return. Does potentially help that 2023 1st round pick though, who’s starting for Cleveland thru Watson’s presumed 6 game suspension? Keenum did manage 2 wins starting in relief for Baker last year.

Yeah, moving on is probably best. I think my brain is still adjusting to not acquiring an overpriced RB in a trade.  Baby steps ;)

Guessing he’s going to lose the 45 he just got split 22 ways and not play about half the season if not worse.

I'm pretty sure Tom Brady could come out at halftime, drop trau & poop right on the Bucs logo and not face a single consequence for it. 

I'm just sayin - if the NFL has taught us anything it's that talent >>>> anything else.

In this case, they got the most for what was an inevitable parting of ways. 

I'm sure they didn't want 22 allegations of sexual assault to surface, an ugly, drawn out season of paying Watson to stay home, and then a forced trade, but they seem to be making the most out of this. 

I have a very difficult time putting this one on the Texans. More about Watson putting his junk on some massage therapists, allegedly. :shrug:  

 
Okay, so in summary, Deshaun Watson since before the 2020 season:

  • Signs a 4 year $156 million contract extension
  • Has a great statistical year in 2020, but the Texans go 4-12
  • Demands to be traded after the 2020 season
  • One month later has 22 civil lawsuits for sexual misconduct filed against him
  • Sits out the 2021 season and gets paid $10.5 million
  • Gets traded to the Browns and gets his 4 year $156 million extension increased to a 5 year $230 million FULLY GUARANTEED contract
  • Has his base salary reduced to $1 million in 2022 so any suspension issued to Deshaun will have a minimal monetary penalty
I really don't want to hear anyone saying how hard this has been for Deshaun Watson

Oh yeah of course they did. Felt they could have got at least 1 player in return, but hey it is what it is. I think its a GREAT trade for the Browns (purely football talking). 

 
Converting so much of his base salary to a bonus is not a good look for the NFL in a situation that is already not a good look. Any suspension will be a complete slap on the wrist now (even moreso than it already was.) Chances that the suspension is made even longer than the standard 6 games because of that? Or am I  :tinfoilhat:

I think it might be 8, reduced to 6 once the dust settles. Big enough people can't accuse them of doing too little, then adjusted to a more standard suspension for this type of issue. 

While I'm on the "believe women" side of this, I also want to point out that he hasn't been convicted of a crime, and we have no idea what evidence the NFL has against him. 

The GJ acquitted him, so for now he technically hasn't done anything to warrant outrage. It's not reaaallly that bad a look, other than the accusations. 

But he's still gonna get suspended IMO.

The price is fine too. Cap went up, going up again year after year. We got our key guys locked in on long term deals already, and w the cap going up consistenly, even less of a problem. You wanna win, you gotta pay.

I’m not sure next years pick will be so late. The AFC is stacked and how many games will Watson be suspended?

 
I'm just glad it's over. While he's worth more in an ideal situation... when he's got a no-trade clause and there's no ability to bid teams against each other, there's only so much a team can do.  I suppose they could have played harder ball on what minimum they'd accept. But it wasn't all that long ago people were calling them crazy for holding onto the requirement of three 1sts and 5 picks total.

Schefter's article that gives the draft picks says they are still finalizing the trade compensation and that's just what's expected. So still hoping there may be some decent players involved too.

I am surprised they didn’t get anyone in return as well. This has been a circus of a process, it would be interesting to see what happened behind the curtain.

 
I get that this is a football forum and don't hold anything against anyone here discussing the football or financial ramifications of this trade, but the whole subject just kind of makes me ill. It's not just that he almost certainly committed wrongdoing and looks like he'll get away with it, it's that his behavior, in addition to being awful and predatory, is so weirdly sociopathic. I'm not excusing Ray Rice or Big Ben or Kareem Hunt or Joe Mixon, but I can at least understand how a situation like that happens (less so the serial abusers like Tyreek or Greg Hardy). But how messed up do you have to be to book appointments with (at least) 22 different masseuses for the express purpose of exposing yourself and forcing them to touch your junk? What he is accused of doing is not as bad as Dave Meggett, Darren Sharper or Bill Cosby, but there is the same weirdness at the core of it.

Even if Watson came out tomorrow, confessed everything, and pledged to spend the rest of his life seeking atonement, I still don't think I could ever get past this.

We don't know what the trade is going to be yet.  Note the wording:

Browns and Texans still are finalizing official trade compensation for Deshaun Watson, but it is expected to include three first-round picks, a third-round pick and potentially a fifth-round pick, league sources tell ESPN.

So that's expected to be included in the trade, but it might not be all of it.

So it was always about the $$$.  I'm now relieved the Saints win in this sweepstakes.   This has potential to be a disaster.  Not taking anything away from Deshaun as a player, but he hasn't done anything to receive that kind of deal.

I get it.   After the Ruggs incident last year, I vowed to never spend another dime on the NFL.  I will watch a few games on TV but never go to a game or purchase team merchandise.  The slow exit away from the NFL is in progress for me,   It’s disgusting what owners, coaches, and players get away with and it’s getting worse.

it could get much, much uglier if some of these 22 women have solid evidence against him, if some of that evidence becomes public.

That’s when the true test of “what the public can stomach” will come to pass - and unfortunately, I think it’ll be 🦗 🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗

Yeah. It's been stressful seeing both teams I follow pursue him too. So a bit of relief today.

As an aside, y'all should check out the Crime in Sports podcast episodes on the two in bold. Funny comedians telling the backstory.

 
By the way, assuming this didn't change in the last CBA, some details on the signing bonus vs salary when it comes to a suspension.

As I understand it, PEDs and substance abuse suspensions, the player automatically loses both salary and signing bonus, prorated for each game he misses. 

For other types of suspension, the salary is automatically lost. But the signing bonus it is an option for the team to choose to recoup signing bonus money prorated in the same fashion. But it's their choice. 

It's a sure thing that Cleveland and Watson's team discussed this in advance and you'd assume Cleveland said they won't do that in doing the restructure. So, signing bonuses aren't always safe from suspension (again unless that changed in the newest CBA). But in Watson's case the money will be safe, effectively.

Watson’s a slime-ball but this part is an odd take to me. Did you post something similar in Russell Wilson’s thread?

Lost in all Watson’s allegations, it’s apparent some have forgotten how terrible the Texans organization is and they caused the rift with Watson prior to the massage stuff coming out. There were legitimate reasons for him to want out of the Houston train-wreck before it came out he was a creeper slimeball. Number 1 of which was the owner telling him they would take his input and desires for a new head coach and GM into account and then pulling a 180 and completely ignoring that in favor of a completely unqualified, snake-oil clergyman and his cronies (maybe Caserio turns out to be a good GM, but not holding my breathe.) They also hired the GM they had to back off of 2 years prior because they got caught illegally tampering trying to lure him away while he was working for the Patriots. They then hired an unqualified head coach who had never been a coordinator in 27 years, much less considered as a head coach candidate and who they fired after one year. A guy who’s resume included being the passing game coordinator on the worst passing offense in the league the year prior to hiring him and being the WR coach the year KC’s WR’s didn’t catch a single TD pass.

Their owner is an inept man child, who inherited the team a few years ago and who was known for playing video games all day in his “office” at the stadium in the year’s prior to taking over the team. I am glad Watson’s gone given his allegations, but the Texans organization is every bit a massive dumpster fire starting from the top, they are far from blameless in running off their franchise QB. To some extent they are lucky his allegations surfaced, as the focus shifted to Watson being a slime-ball vs their own ineptitude.
