Huard hurt in Chiefs practice

By ELIZABETH MERRILL

The Kansas City Star

Just when it looked as if coach Herm Edwards’ bad luck with quarterbacks was turning, the Chiefs were hit with another injury Thursday.

Damon Huard suffered an undisclosed injury toward the end of practice, a source close to the team said, and his status is uncertain for Sunday’s game with the Seahawks. The injury came roughly 24 hours after veteran quarterback Trent Green returned to practice from nearly a seven-week layoff from a severe concussion.

Green isn’t expected back until at least the Miami game Nov. 12, but the Chiefs were confident because Huard had filled in admirably and led the team to a 3-2 record as a starter. His biggest win came last weekend, when he helped Kansas City to a 30-27 upset over the Chargers. Huard, who hadn’t completed a pass in five years before Green went down, is ranked fifth in the league with a 96.7 quarterback rating. He’s completed 104 of 163 passes for 1,163 yards and seven touchdowns.

The starting quarterback generally meets with reporters on Thursday afternoons, but Huard was absent this week. The club’s PR department said he was attending an NFL Players Association meeting. Much of the locker room was empty late Thursday, apparently because of the meeting.

Rookie Brodie Croyle took the reps at the end of Thursday’s practice, which was moved indoors because of the rain. Croyle, a finalist for the Johnny Unitas award last year at Alabama, is considered the Chiefs’ quarterback of the future.

But he’s untested and threw two interceptions in mop-up time Oct. 15 at Pittsburgh.

Edwards has had his share of headaches with quarterbacks. Four of his quarterbacks went down to injury last year in New York, and, in his debut game in Kansas City, Green was knocked unconscious after making his 81st straight start.

The Seahawks are also dealing with quarterback issues. Starter Matt Hasselbeck will sit Sunday because of a knee injury.

According to Metro Sports, a local cable sports network in KC, the Chiefs were practicing indoors today because of the bad weather here and near the end of practice, Huard felt a twinge in his groin and left the field quickly. Croyle finished practice out with the first team.

They say that the organization is being tight-lipped about it.

That is all I have for now.

Nothing more to add....cannot find any more links, but did want to add that Michael Bennett isn't listed this week on the Injury Report. If Croyle does start, I think Bennett could see 15-20 carries IN ADDITION to what LJ gets. Herm will wanna eat up the clock.

FWIW I am going to look to see if I can find the box score from this preseason. He played A LOT in game #4, and that is the only real PT he has seen outside of the mop up in Pittsburgh.

What's the single-game record for most carries in a game? If Croyle starts I think LJ could make a run at it.

In terms of the passing game, it would be difficult to go near Kennison or Samie Parker even though the Seahawks are a very good matchup. I would expect to see a lot of short passes to LJ out of the backfield and I think this is a game where Gonzalez could be very active. Remember Week 1 when Huard came in and threw repeatedly to Gonzalez; I could see something similar here. Short and intermediate throws are tailor-made for an inexperienced QB and that's the kind of stuff Gonzalez can make a living off of.

Boost the Seahawk's defense?

This has got to add a number of points via turnovers and sacks to the Seattle D/ST projections for this week. I boost the 'Hawks sack numbers to 5, Int.'s to 2, and fumble to 0.8. Also drops passing yards against to under 175.

In a game of green QBs, which defense is better? I can see boosting Seattle's D/ST, but KC's has been a force as well. Instead of the offensive powerhouse game all were expecting this one to be, it may very well be a defensive battle instead. I can see both D/ST getting good amounts of sacks and a few INTs/fumbles this week. Should be a good week to start either D/ST, IMO. :football:

As a Seahawk fan, this certainly isn't the worse news I've got in the last several weeks.................. :stirspot:

I don't have a link but I live here in KC and was listening to 610 Sports this morning. One of their media members said it's getting blown out of proportion. Supposedly, Huard was about an hour into practice when he "tweaked" a groin. The staff being very cautious had him sit out the last 30 minutes (since practices are normally 1.5 hours) and Croyle took "THE REMAINING SNAPS". Doesn't sound too serious to me and people sound like they are starting to panic. Huard will play Sunday.

As an Alabama fan, here's what I can tell you about Brodie:

- He's an extremely intelligent and hard-working kid...won't have a problem picking up the playbook

- He has an NFL arm...can make basically any throw

- He's small and prone to injury...everyone knows this.

- He's a "gunslinger"...IOW, he has no fear at all of firing at guys not completely open

To me, Brodie is a guy similiar to Romo in that he may throw 3 picks and 2 TDs.

Man I won't have a QB this week in 1 league if he can't go.. I picked up Huard to play for Hasselbeck and do not have any other options.. In another league I was able to get Batch.. This would surely be a loss..

I would not call it speculation, esp. with the KC Star reporting it. When I see 12 KC media outlets reporting it, I doubt they all are going off of speculation.

FYI, you can listen live during the day to the two major KC Sports Stations online

Sounds like Big Ben may start as well, so you better find another backup to your backup.

Sounds a bit like Grossman to me...

Printers still on PS?Tell Herm I'd rather see him, TIA
I take it you didn't see Printers play in the preseason. Herm would probably think you were on crack.
No I didn't but it's way more interesting to see some CFL boy sling it than some heralded draft pick. Heck I'd rather see Brock Huard.
Not when he throws it to the other team. Brock was actually on the radio today, talking about how Damon was excited that he'd be playing in a game that will be shown in his hometown (Seattle area). He also said Damon tweaked his groin, but expects him to play.Local radio says this is being blown out of proportion, that he was pulled as a precautionary measure.Whether he practices or not today...well, there are some differing opinions on that.

Ok, live from Arrowhead...Todd Lebo

Talked with Huard as he was walking to the practice field (said he was walking fine, no limp or anything like that). Huard said he was going to participate in limited practice.

He is not on the injury report, but they need to turn in a new report at 3pm. Herm will be interviewed (and grilled) in about an hour or so. Huard will be the QB who takes the interview after Herm. From everything that he's reporting so far, it sounds like they still expect Huard to start Sunday, but they're going to be very careful with him in practice for the rest of the week.

No "official" word until the Herm interview, sorry.

According to 810-AM in KC @ 1:20 CT, the latest is that sources inside the organization say that the injury is worse than what everyone is saying. Huard has a noticeable limp and that even if he does try and play Sunday, Croyle is being told to be ready.

The prevailing notion is that Huard will probably try and play, but if the limp continues, Croyle will have to be ready.

Listening to Herm and Huard sound bites.....

Both are saying it will come down to Sunday....Croyle says he is ready to go if Huard is out.

Huard getting treatment all weekend....no tear, just a strain.

Huard wasn't limping much....he was standing on it, walking around. Has not tested it on dropbacks

Damon's brother Brock was on a talk radio show here in Seattle and they asked him about his brother - He said something to the effect that Damon was pretty concerned about it last night but he felt much better about it today and that he was going to try to give it a go in practice today. Interestingly though he said "lower leg" then he said "well in his leg", then he said (i don't know if he was joking or not but) he said that his groin stretched all the way down his leg - I'm not kidding!

this from speaking to him on his cell while he was at the end of a 4 hour rub down...

Is Huard really hurt or is this just speculation?
Hi crf,Today's practice will tell the tale. He was hurt enough to miss practice he needed. But we'll see what he can do after treatment last night and today.J
Thanks. I saw that when I got back from work.

Should have posted that.......it is two different guys visual interpretations of what a limp is....one guy is more of a shock jock type, which is the guy who said there was a noticeable limp.

I have a disdain for all KC media, so either one could be the answer. They are all trying to make the best story

Q&A with QB DAMON HUARD - 10/27

Oct 27, 2006, 3:27:21 PM

VIDEO: Real | Windows | Audio

Q: How are you feeling?

HUARD: “I’m doing okay. As Coach told you I tweaked my groin a little bit in practice yesterday and I haven’t really done a whole lot to test it to this point. Right now I’m just going to rest it and see how I feel Sunday and hopefully just go play ball.”

Q: What is your gut feeling for Sunday?

HUARD: “Like I said I haven’t tested this thing so I’m going to get treatment, listen to our medical staff and hopefully it gets better and I’m ready to roll on Sunday.”

Q: Have you had this type of injury before?

HAURD: “No, I have not.”

Q: So you don’t really know what to expect do you?

HUARD: “Not really, no. I know its feeling better today than it felt yesterday.”

Q: Have you ever felt worse than you do today and still played in a game?

HUARD: “When you’re a starting quarterback, even at the college level you’re going to have nicks and bruises. I think most guys out there playing have things. Injuries are a part of this game. Certainly I’ve played through some nicks and bruises. So yeah, I’ve done that before.”

Q: As of today do you feel that you could go Sunday?

HUARD: “Like I said before, I really haven’t tested it to the point where I’m taking a drop or stepping and throwing or sliding. The first 24 hours let’s just let this thing settle down.”

Q: How did this happen?

HUARD: “Just stepping up in the pocket, randomly.

Q: Did you know something was wrong right away?

HUARD: “Yeah, it was just kind of a funny feeling in my groin.”

Q: You had an MRI and nothing is torn right?

HUARD: “Nothing is torn.”

Q: How frustrating is this since you’ve finally gotten your chance to play a lot?

HUARD: “It’s very frustrating. But this is a part of football and sometimes this happens. I don’t know why it happened, but it did. We’re just going to work through it and hopefully be ready to go on Sunday.”

Q: How important is this game to you personally since you’re from Washington and played collegiately there?

HUARD: “It’s important because it’s where I live and where I’m from and I have a lot of friends and family up there. But at the same time it’s just another football game for the Kansas City Chiefs and another opportunity for us to go get a win on Sunday. I’m trying not to make it any bigger than it already is. It is just another football game and that’s the way I’ve approached it this week.”

Q: Does that add to your frustration of this injury?

HUARD: “Things happen in life for a reason and I don’t know why this happened. I don’t think it’s the end of the world. I don’t think it’s really that big of a deal. Hopefully on Sunday I can just go out there and play ball.”

Q: Is Brodie Croyle ready to go in case you can’t?

HUARD: “Absoluetly. He’s a fiery young guy and he’s worked hard this week in practice and he’ll be ready roll if he has to. But hopefully I will.”

Q: Will you be getting treatment the whole time or just resting?

HUARD: “I’m going to be here a lot, and tomorrow at the hotel. You can only treat it so much. A lot of it is getting rest. We’ve got a great staff and I’ll just listen to them and do whatever they tell me to do.”

Q: Have you talked to any players about advice for this type of injury?

HUARD: “No, not really, Everybody’s injuries are different and respond differently. I’ve never really been down the groin injury before so I really don’t know what to expect.”

Q: What makes Arrowhead so tough on young quarterbacks?

HUARD: “There is a mystique about this stadium. It’s 30 years old. It’s a great college environment almost with the sea of red and the barbeque you drive up to. Football is really important in this town and I think this stadium shows that. I don’t know why they maybe struggle. Maybe it’s our defense, maybe it’s the crowd. It’s just a hostile environment and when the momentum and things get rolling, it can get tough on a quarterback. It’s a great place to play and a great place to be the home team.”

Q: Will you have anything to say to Brodie before the game if he has to start?

HUARD: “We’re all in this thing together and we’re a tight group of quarterbacks. They’ve done a great job of supporting me, and I’ll do whatever I can to help the team win. But Brodie got a day of practice today for the most part, so I think that will help him if he has to play. But I’m hopeful and optimistic that I can be out there Sunday.”

Q: He seems unflappable, have you noticed that?

HUARD: “He’s very mature for his age. He’s very cool, very calm. He has a lot of poise and he’s going to be a good quarterback in this league.”
