QB Jared Goff, DET (1 Viewer)

Lions OC Anthony Lynn expects Jared Goff to take more deep shots the final five weeks of the regular season.

Lynn described Goff as a "trust" quarterback, and believes his receivers "are earning his trust more by making plays for him down the field." Those words are paraphrased by Lions reporter Tim Twentyman. It sounds silly, but this actually has been borne out by the results since the Lions acquired ex-Rams/Goff field stretcher Josh Reynolds. Goff has been throwing down the field more and the overall passing attack has been far more competent, including short-area compiler Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff — don't shoot the messenger — was the NFC player of the week for Week 13. The Broncos and Cardinals are tough QB2 matchups before easier dates with Atlanta and Seattle.

Campbell wouldn’t name a starter if Goff doesn’t test out. Jared is attending meetings & practice virtually, they delivered Rx meds & vitamins to him but he’s still symptomatic. Experiencing very mild symptoms but as of today really no reason (so far) to expect him to test out before Sunday.

Both running backs are back practicing today,

which RBs are included in both?  Williams/Reynolds?  Swift/Williams?

ETA...nevermind, saw your other post that Swift/williams were practicing.

Yup, sorry, I meant the two who haven’t practiced for weeks. I sometimes forget not everyone knows what’s going on with Detroit lol.

Campbell said yesterday Craig Reynolds has earned touches and didn’t sound like Swift is automatic so guess we’ll have to monitor.

If Goff can’t play probably should steer clear of all Lions bc their backup QBs are worse than Garrett Gilbert (or is it Gilbert Garrett?)

even St. Brown?  he's been so good lately but I guess that's with Goff throwing the ball.   that would be a huge bummer

IKR? Really coming on the last 3 weeks. It’s a great matchup, too.

I just feel like you cannot trust either Boyle or Blough. They haven’t shown any level of NFL competence. If they gotta run jumbo all day they just might. As it is we have an extra lineman in there the 4th most in the league. At least twice they ran on 3rd & 5 last week (converted both times) - that was with Goff.

Could totally see a less than 20 pass attempts game plan. Their line is outstanding at run blocking. 5th string RB tearing it up the last two weeks.

Goff has statistically been a top 4 QB the last month or so.

I don’t think anyone in the Lions thread (here or at r/DetroitLions) was advocating for him after the first half of the season. But since then we’ve seen Tim Boyle twice. It could be way, way worse.

Once they got Josh Reynolds involved, we started to see Jared display some competence. Amazing what a difference it makes when you swap out misfit toys with NFL caliber skill players. Next year they will sign or draft an alpha WR1.

Also, the TE Assistant Coach might be the de facto OC. Guessing - A Lynn is out of the loop, but everybody says the right thing in front of the media to keep stuff in house. Anyway, when Swift and then Hock went down, they got more creative. Voilà, Goff started looking like an NFL QB.

He was, is and always s/b a bridge QB. It was gonna be a one year audition, but they restructured him to free up cap - now he’s a two year placeholder. But he is not as terrible as the first impression.

Goff will make $31.1 million in 2022. Releasing him would only free up $650,000 in cap space while generating a dead cap hit of $30.5 million. No incentive to do that, and the QB class of 2022 is meh. If the Lions find a suitable replacement for Goff in the 202e draft or FA, they can cut him in 2023. Releasing him then would save him $20 million with a manageable $10 million dead cap hit.

Jared Goff (knee) did not practice for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

Tim Boyle was made available to the media on Wednesday, and this certainly make it appear that we should consider Boyle a real possibility to start this week. Goff can get to questionable with an appearance at practice on Friday, but he has to be considered on the pessimistic side of it right now.

Jared Goff (knee) is doubtful for Week 17 against the Seahawks.

We might not see Goff again this season as he recovers from a knee issue that will keep Tim Boyle planted under center for Detroit. Amon-Ra St. Brown proved immune to the team's QB change in Week 16, as Boyle connected with St. Brown nine times for 91 yards and a score. The Seahawks defense is a worthwhile streaming option with Boyle getting another start.

My wish would have been to see Goff start the last three games. With the thought that Lions would have more games to evaluate whether he could be the main guy. They can use next season for that evaluation but it does effect how they approach this years draft and the QB position.

Lions GM Brad Holmes credited QB Jared Goff for the team's improved play down the stretch of the season

"The success he had late — he had rough patches to fight through — I give him credit that he stayed the course."  Goff rebounded from an uneven first half, winning three of his final five games while completing 70% of his passes with an 11:2 TD/INT ratio. That came despite playing through oblique and knee injuries with the one of the league's worst support casts. With the No. 2 overall pick and the Rams' first-rounder, the Lions need to decide whether to build around Goff or draft his replacement this offseason. Goff's contract ($15.5M guaranteed) and late-year turnaround make him the favorite to return as Detroit's starter.

Goff is the quarterback in 2022. First two picks s/b EDGE and an alpha WR. Consensus is all defense thereafter.

I would say there’s a less than 5% chance they look for a QB this year. However, they are coaching the Senior Bowl so I suppose it’s possible they fall in love with Malik.

Regardless, Goff is the bridge until at least Spring 2023.

MLive’s Kyle Meinke believes Jared Goff “might have played himself into the conversation” as Detroit’s long-term quarterback.

Goff set team records despite missing three games in his first year in Detroit, throwing for 3,245 yards, a 19:8 TD/INT ratio and 91.5 passer rating. Most of that came down the stretch — Goff’s rating spiked 15 points (107.1) and he completed 72% of his passes in his final five games after coach Dan Campbell took over playcalling. With a support cast that featured Josh Reynolds and Amon-Ra St. Brown as his top receivers, the Lions are warming to Goff as more than a short-term answer and could build around him rather than replace Goff with one of their two first-round picks or projected $25 million in cap space. Goff’s contract ($30.5M dead cap hit) sets up for at least two seasons in Detroit. The question is whether the Lions are sold on him as their franchise quarterback.

Last five games project to 3,862 yards with 37 TDs and 7 INTs for a 17-game season. Of course, the 5 games before he had 1,009 yards with 1 TD and 4 INTs.

Maybe it was Campbell, or just the absence of Anthony Lynn. But the truth is simple. Goff's the QB for 2022 because of cap restraints. He's capable (12/14 games with 200+ yards) but not spectacular (4 games above 250, high of 338 which came week 1). A few 3 TD games, but more with 0. He's too far from elite, but maybe he's good enough. Though where they land next year with the (potentially) QB-rush 2023 draft and Free agency means absolutely no promises beyond that no matter what coachspeak says.

Speaking Monday, Lions GM Brad Holmes said of the quarterback position that "We have a starter that can be productive for us. Jared [Goff] is our quarterback and we're going to make sure he's put in the best position to succeed."

Cold water for those Malik Willis-at-No. 2 scenarios, though it could just be GM-speak. Holmes has continually talked up Goff when asked about him this offseason and cutting him will provide almost no cap relief in 2022 either way. Holmes also noted that he's fielded a few calls about trading down from No. 2 overall. The Lions are where the real discussions about the draftable quarterbacks start in 2022. So far, it doesn't look like they're in any rush to take one.

OC Ben Johnson watched film with Jared Goff while putting together new Lions playbook

Johnson, maybe the best young OC in the league, spent a lot of time crushing film with Goff this off season.

“One thing that we’ve done is included him a lot in what we’re trying to do schematically,” Johnson said. “So we spent some time this offseason watching more of the stuff he did a few years ago in L.A. and how we can incorporate some of that, while also challenging him to take the next step in some areas of improvement for him as a player as well.

“I think when you look back at his time in LA, he was really successful with certain schemes, with certain concepts. We’re just going to look to incorporate some of those a little bit more. I know play-action is something he’s really good at, and we’re going to look at doing that. It’s really a strength of our offense as well. We’re going to be a really good running team, so that’s going to show up on Sundays is the play-action and the movement game. I think he’s taken a lot of pride and been able to speak his opinion, give his say on what he likes, what he doesn’t like, what makes sense to him. But at the same time, he’s willing to be coached. He wants to be coached hard. That to me is the most encouraging thing about his development. He’s still growing as a player. He’s not close-minded. He’s had a lot of success. He’s gone to a Super Bowl, but at the same time he wants to continue to push the envelope open and continue to get better.”

The approach is very different from the one Lynn took last season. Lynn didn’t consult with Goff at all, and wound up on a different page from his quarterback. They lacked chemistry and rapport, and that riff was among the biggest reasons head coach Dan Campbell took over the playcalling halfway through the season. Johnson became the de facto passing game coordinator.

Goff threw 8 TDs with 6 INT under A Lynn. With MCDC calling plays (many designed by Johnson), he threw 11 TDs with 2 INT.

Jared Goff completed 21-of-37 passes for 215 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the Lions' 35-38, Week 1 loss to the Eagles.

Goff didn't have a notable fantasy day, but his offense scored five times on a defense that allowed less than three touchdowns per game in 2021. In addition to throwing a single interception, he was also sacked just once. Goff leaned heavily on Amon-Ra St. Brown, looking his way 12 times. He connected with St. Brown and newcomer D.J. Chark for his two scores. The Lions have an improved receiving room and an elite offensive line. Goff looks more than capable of posting QB2 numbers versus the Commanders next week.

- NBCSportsEDGE

Jared Goff completed 25-of-41 attempts for 277 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Lions' 28-24, Week 3 loss to the Vikings.

Goff's touchdown came on a play action pass from the 5-yard line that got T.J. Hockenson wide open for an easy score. Goff's interception came on the final play of the game as he chucked up a desperation heave. Goff played well enough for the Lions to win the game, but Dan Campbell got conservative in the fourth quarter. He opted to not to go for it on 4th-and-4, which would have been a game-sealing conversion. The Lions instead attempted and missed a 54-yard kick. Even if made, the kick would have only put the Lions up six. The miss gave the Vikings great field position for their subsequent game-winning TD drive. Goff will look to get the Lions back to .500 against the Seahawks in Week 4.

- NBCSportsEDGE

Jared Goff completed 21-of-26 passes for 228 scoreless yards and two interceptions in the Lions' 24-6, Week 7 loss to the Cowboys.

D'Andre Swift (shoulder) was held out of this one, and Amon-Ra St. Brown left in the first quarter with a concussion. D.J. Chark was placed on I.R. over the weekend. Still, Goff was horrendous, with a bad under-throw on a deep-ball INT to Trevon Diggs before then throwing into coverage over the middle on his second pick. After a flawless Weeks 1-4, Goff has turned it over six times in the last two games. Goff is in an on-paper good spot next week against the Dolphins, but he's been too bad of late to trust as a streaming option outside of two-QB leagues.

Jared Goff completed 23-of-37 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions' 28-25, Week 12 loss to the Bills.

Playing against the Bills' elite defense under the national television Thanksgiving glare, Goff had his best game in several weeks, locking onto Amon-Ra St. Brown for 9/122/1. He was also hammered for a third quarter safety, but that was more the result of bad play-calling than poor decision-making. Goff will remain QB2 relevant for Week 13 against the Jaguars.

Jared Goff completed 31-of-41 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions' 40-14, Week 13 win over the Jaguars.

Making the Jaguars' defense look like it wasn't even on the field, Goff posted his most yards since Week 4, and second most of the season. Locked onto Amon-Ra St. Brown for 11/114/2, Goff also got things cooking with D.J. Chark and DeAndre Swift. Chark was coming in handy down the field, while ARSB and Swift tacked on some YAC. It was perfect pitch-and-catch mode for a quarterback who is at his best when he can get in rhythm and not have to force things deep. Taking advantage of his loaded supporting cast for multiple touchdowns more weeks than not, Goff will have QB2 relevance for Week 14 against the Vikings' shaky pass defense.

Been a lot of back n forth about whether Goff is anything more than a bridge QB, if they should retain him next year (or next two years) to tutor the franchise QB they're expected to draft in one of the next two drafts. Virtually no one believes he is the long term solution.

His home/road splits this year are mercurial. 270 yards per game with 17 TDs and 3 INT in 7 g at Ford Field; 229 /g with only 2 TDs and 4 INT in 5 road contests.

This week is the most meaningful game of his time in Detroit. I don't know that it will answer anything definitively wrt his future. It will define if this season will have any more meaningful games. They have virtually no shot at the playoffs if they don't run the table.

It's pretty obvious that GM Holmes is president of the Jared Goff fanclub. Helped draft the guy, involved him in the Stafford trade, and has done nothing in the draft or FA market so far at QB. But I think even he knows that right now the Lions are screwed if something happens to Goff. I doubt he would add a FA since that would be even more expense at what is already a expensive position with Goff's contract. While I'm not sold on any of the tops names I wouldn't mind getting someone in the 2nd round or later that can be developed for a year. Cutting Goff now would save money but at what cost.

This makes sense because when you're not sure, you have to hedge. If they can't draft a de facto franchise QB, sticking with Goff and continuing to build this team would be the way to go but not without a having bridge guy behind the bridge guy.

I'd be surprised if Goff wasn't on the team next year, whether we draft a qb or not. He's much better than trying to go the Wentz, Ryan, etc old retread route.

Jared Goff needs 232 passing yards Sunday to reach 25k for his career.

If he gets it, he'll tie Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner (97 games) as the third-fastest player ever to the milestone.

The record holder is Matthew Stafford (90 games), who broke the record of Dan Marino (92 games.)

Even after this came out, quite a few mock drafters have the Lions taking a QB. The name I keep seeing is Will Levis. Every time I see the name, they say he’d sit behind Goff & develop.

The Lions GM was the Rams Director of College Scouting 2013-2020. He's a Goff stan. Right now I think Goff and Ben Johnson mesh very well. Unfortunately he might take a HC in the upcoming offseason so there's a lot in flux. But if they manage to retain Johnson I hope that stick with Goff. He's doing a good job of taking care of the football and they can keep pace with anyone.

Regardless of whether they take a QB in 2023 or 2024, it's manageable to keep Goff around. He's got a cap hit that will be middle of the pack the next few years. Remaining salary is $52.3M, cap hit with the restructure will be $30.6M and $31.6M. You figure the going rate for franchise QBs signing new deals is $45-50M so doesn't seem like a bad idea to retain him. Hopefully they don't do something silly like extend him.

***************

Defensively, Detroit has had a lot of improvement during their mini-run. Still I think most fans are hoping the vast majority of their picks in 2023 will be to help that side of the ball.

Lions 2023 NFL Draft picks
  • First round: Rams pick (currently 4th)
  • First round: Lions own pick (15th)

  • Second round: Lions own pick (46)
  • Second round: Vikings pick (61)

  • Third round: Lions own pick (78)

  • Fifth round: Lions own pick

  • Sixth round: Broncos pick
  • Sixth round: Lions own pick

This offense has been great. Why would they change the QB?

They get two high end defenders with their first round picks they're a legitimate contender.

Because 9-7 isn’t good enough

j/k sorry if I triggered anyone

I’m fine with Goff being their QB in 2023 and 2024. I would prefer they don’t extend him.

If Holmes continues stacking drafts and we attract a high quality FA or two, it’s likely (and I do mean greater than 50% chance) Jared Goff will be the limiting factor from making a deep run.

He’s a nice guy. I like him on a personal
level. What he has been through - letting his team down in the Super Bowl, basically getting fired by one of the best offensive HCs in the game - that’s not an easy bounce back. He has handled it well.

There’s an amazing redemptive arc out there waiting to be written in which Jared Goff, everyone’s everyman, leads the Lions to glory. It’s within the range of outcomes.

I just think to be a champion you need greatness at QB. Not pretty good.

I could be totally wrong about Goff. That’s also within the range of outcomes. I trust Brad Holmes to make the right decision. He knows better than I do.

Just heard an interview the Lions GM Holmes gave right after the draft. Said all the right things about Goff but also said that there were QBs on their draft board. He basically said there were ones they were looking at but didnt wanted to "reach" on.

If we want to have an ongoing contender, they need to have a reliable backup. I believe that they have been careful to boost Goff's confidence and not put someone at backup who could be viewed as a threat. Additionally, Lions have not had the resources and have not made it a priority to upgrade the backup QB.

I think that all this changes next year with the Lions now looking like a contender. How Goff performs the rest of the year will determine whether they draft a QB in first round or look later in the draft.

Unless Goff plays way better than he has so far this season, I think it'd be a mistake to think he's the long term QB. Goff is the new Andy Dalton, he looks good in spurts, but shouldn't be the plan. If that Rams pick is top-5, I think QB should be priority #1. I'd be ok with that guy sitting behind Goff initially though.
This is fair but QBs of that caliber, and I personally think Goff>Dalton, are good enough to lead teams to the SB and win.

Rolling the dice with Goff allows them to add to the defense and, possibly make them legit contenders as soon as 2023. Going with a rookie pushes back that time frame a year, at least, and with this offensive line and Ben Johnson at OC, you want to push for the ring right ####### now!!!

They likely will not make the playoffs this year, I still think they will lose on Sunday even with Zach Wilson under center (although I did pick them in my survivor pool), but if they continue to do what they've been doing and make the playoffs, no team is going to want to face them.

And if anyone questions my Lions fandom...okay I'm ride or die Raiders but I left my Labor Day draft with Swift, ARSB, Goff & Jamaal on my team and added Jameson two weeks ago (for Sutton). Been rolling four Lions for weeks and may be rolling five next week.

Plus Barry is just one of my all time guys. Such a class act and no one made you hold your breath every time he touched the ball like Barry did. Such a pleasure to watch.

I think I disagree with all 3 of these points.

Personally, I think Dalton>Goff, at least the Bengals version of Dalton, who was long considered the line at QB, as in, "is your QB better than Dalton? If so he's a franchise QB, if not, keep looking." I don't see drafting a rookie as something that sets them back. They have 2 1sts, and Goff is affordable, if you want to go the Trey Lance (with better health hopefully) route. But, its also a great QB class, and going to situation with a great OL, and good OC will make any rookie QB look better.

I actually think the Lions are a good bet to make the playoffs. Its highly unlikely both Washington and New York to make it. There is even a chance neither makes it. One of them will lose this week (though 2 teams tying in both their games in 1 season would be amazing) and have 2 likely losses on the schedule in the last 3. Washington has SF/Cle/Dal after this week, and NY has Min/Ind/Phi. Maybe that Eagles game is meaningless, but not if Dallas beats Philly next week. Meanwhile the Lions schedule is very nice especially if they win this week, with Car/Chi/GB left, all teams who probably wouldn't mind improving their draft position, though Carolina might somehow win their garbage division. The other team in the hunt is Seattle, but they seem to be falling apart and still have KC/NYJ/LAR left.
