QB Jared Goff, DET (2 Viewers)

And the point to not be lost in all of this is that Jeff Fisher is terrible and should never be allowed to coach again.

Well, gosh Mike Martz:

:lmao:

Martz was asked if he believed new Rams head coach Sean McVay can make a difference for Goff.

"What is he, a couple of months older than Jared? They hired a buddy for Jared. The NFL has nothing to do with being the friend or the buddy of the quarterback. You've got to coach them and work them hard with respect. But buddy? And this guy is a quarterback expert? An offensive expert? Wait a minute while I puke. Right, he's going to be able to teach and handle and guide Jared through tough times because of all of his expertise and knowledge? Right. I'm not going to drink that Kool-Aid."
Pretty sure before this week's game they were on pace to score the exact same amount of points as the greatest show on turf.

Goff and McVay both deserve a ton of credit. Fisher also gets credit for making those two look so good.

Incredible turn around is an understatement.

Without a doubt.

Goff entered the season with the perception that if he were Blake Bortles level competent that it would represent at least an upward trend.  Kid deserves a lot of credit and I’m sure has earned a lot of respect 8n that locker room with his emergence.

Remember, PHI has loved Wentz since he was drafted.  Goff really had a Hill to climb.  Kudos.

I am happy for Goff, but I am even more excited that Fisher is being exposed even more as the terrible coach he was. So many teams suffered because he was their coach, it does deserve discussion how a coach who lasted as long as he did in the NFL can be so grossly incompetent when it comes to understanding the game. He destroyed Vince Youngs career and ability to learn before it even started.

Goffs growth shows why so many thought he was worthy of the #1 pick, Fisher just did his best to try to hamper his growth, just like Vince Young.

Curious what Goff owners are doing this week.

He looks to be on the QB1 fringe this week. @MN is not the easiest matchup.

Is he matchup proof? Or are Goff's performances going the way of the matchup? In good matchups he thrives, in bad matchups not so much.

Debating Goff vs. Ryan (@SEA...with banged up secondary) and other streamers. Want to trust Goff but I really don't see a matchup this season where he outperformed in a sub par matchup.

I think it’s too early to say he’s matchup-proof in the NFL, but he certainly was in college, in terms of statistics (not game results). In five games against USC and Oregon Goff threw at least 2 TDs in each game. Freshman and sophomore years against USC he went for 250+ with 3 TD and 0 INT.

He’s a gamer.

Not a Goff owner but life long Rams fan.  I'm not ready to call him matchup proof but this week will go a long way to defining that.  I've loved what I've seen from him so far with his poise in the pocket and how he (and the team) has responded to adversity.  Hope is high but the years of ineptitude have left me gun shy and reticent to jump in with both feet this early in the process.

I got to see most of the Minnesota game. Goff looked pretty good despite losing and not throwing a TD (23/37/255, 0/0). Kupp fumbled at the 1, and later dropped a nice third-down pass that would have put them in the red zone. Goff particularly showed good pocket presence, consistently sliding away from pressure and keeping his eyes downfield.

I didn't see the New Orleans game but loved the highlight of the TD throw to Josh Reynolds, where Goff again sat in the pocket, used his footwork to buy more time after the initial reads were not open, and pointed Reynolds to the passing lane he wanted him to break towards. He's playing with confidence.

He needs to take care of business this week against Arizona. Then in week 14 we get the pleasure of seeing Goff vs. Wentz, followed by Goff vs. Wilson and Goff vs. Mariotta. This week's your last chance to get a good spot on the bandwagon before the hype machine goes into high gear.

What strikes me about him is his demeanor and command.  Romo talked about it during the broadcast in terms of how much is on his plate for a 2nd year QB.  And McVay has actually been innovative in terms of communication with Goff sideline-to-helmet.

I think the biggest transition you see in in young QB's is when they turn from a managed instrument into an attack instrument.  I'd say earlier in the year, there was more of an effort to manage him but now they are clearly attacking defenses with him as the lead.  Impressive.

And Martz is an arrogant moron.

@WheelsUp - I think you will enjoy this link:

Are Jared Goff and Case Keenum that good, or was coach Jeff Fisher a QB killer?

OK, here we go: the first meeting of the controversial top two picks of the 2016 draft (assuming the LA fires don't derail it). Wentz stumbled in week 13 with a fumble and an interception which led to Philly falling to 10-2; they still have the division wrapped up, but now they have to compete for the bye week. (Worth noting: Goff also had his worst game of the season against Seattle). Goff took care of business against Arizona, brining the Rams to 9-3 at the top of the West. They still have to contend with Seattle for the division title.

QBs always get too much credit and too much blame, and that will certainly be true this week. It's understandably being billed as "GOFF VS. WENTZ". The Rams are 2.5-point favorites at home, meaning that Vegas sees the Eagles as marginally better.

Going in, the stats are:

Goff: 244/392 (62.2%), 3184 yards, 20 TD/6 INT, 8.1 YPA, rating 98.4

Wentz: 242/399 (60.7%), 3005 yards, 29 TD/6 INT, 8.3 YPA, rating 102.0

Almost identical except Wentz has shown more ability to consistently put it in the end zone. But that may be changing as the Rams get more polished; Goff has multiple TDs in four of his last five games, despite losing Robert Woods.

The winner is likely to get labeled as "maybe the best young QB in the league".

Who's your pick?

wentz

sitting goff for rivers in my league and i think the eagles win a very well played game.  im a homer though

The game didn't disappoint, except for Wentz's injury. What a bummer. Pretty epic that it happened on a gutsy TD run which didn't count because of penalty, and that he stayed in to complete a fourth-down TD pass to give the Eagles the lead.

Goff performed pretty well, but I'd say clearly not as well as Wentz. The Eagles' playbook is noticeably more open, and Wentz made more difficult throws. Goff twice failed to read the dropping linebacker in underneath coverage, so while he didn't throw any interceptions, he got lucky on that count. And the late fumble was bad, though not really a bad play by Goff, more of a great play by Long.

So while Goff did put his team ahead in the fourth quarter, the first round goes to Wentz, despite the fact that Foles will get the fourth quarter comeback credit. It's a shame that we won't get to see them both in the playoffs this year; this still has the makings of a long-term rivalry and discussion fodder.

What's really going to be interesting is a year or 2 down the line. Last years redshirt season for Goff has him behind the 8 ball when compared to Wentz right now. Goff is 2 years younger I believe and finally has a coaching staff to rival Wentz so his development over the next year or 2 should even things out.

I do have to say though that Wentz's mobility and Big Ben like ability to not go down when hit is really impressive. He made some throws yesterday in a "dirty" pocket that left me wow'd.  Stating the obvious here but the future is bright for both these guys

100% agree. The way Wentz hangs in there in the face of big pressure is really impressive.

Not much yardage this week because of the dominating win. Still not quite as much of a killer instinct in the red zone as you'd like to see; game started with two Zuerlein field goals that could/should have been TD drives. The INT wasn't that big a deal, coming on a fourth-down play, but you'd like to see them convert in that situation.

So, while he outplayed Russell Wilson, I'd say it wasn't a super-convincing performance by Goff; this was Gurley's game. Rams haven't clinched but they are looking pretty good for it going into next week's game against Mariota and the Titans.

So Goff has only thrown the ball 78 times last 3 games...still has 6 TD’s.  But by in large has been quiet recently.

Now he gets the Titans on the road who could be down two of their Top 3 CB’s, but are third in the NFL in rushing defense.  I’ve got a lot riding on him as I’m starting him...but this week shaping up like it could be HUGE.

nobody is talking about Goff

#8 QB in one league, 10th in another league,  8th in one league -a more experienced WR in his sophomore year in Kupp, better TE's with another year experience too, still has Gurley, acquired Cooks, has Woods ... no significant injuries right now to the team, right ?

why is nobody talking about Goff ?

in a redraft I am in he went 17th overall ....

I guess he's not sexy enough. There are certain guys everyone latches onto who are seen as exciting or talented and for whatever reason he isn't one of them. There seems to be a hangover from his terrible rookie year and the stuff about McVay calling plays in his headset pre-snap or whatever it was probably reinforced for many people that Goff really isn't that good. I've also heard him described as a game manager, which is ridiculous IMO.

So yeah, basically even though he was a #1 overall pick, not many people seem to actually think he's good at football. To the extent that he appears to be, the credit is largely given to McVay and the offense. That's why there's no excitement.

Excellent target in all drafts and dynasty IMO, although QB is so deep that the individual value of any of the guys in his range in a 1QB league is necessarily depressed a bit.

17th QB taken?  Or are you in some sort of weird start 3 QB league?

He needs 1 more good year to shake off the damage Fisher did to his reputation in his rookie year.

Goff and Trubisky are two #1 overall picks that were poo pooed by the fantasy community. I drafted both in a league and without looking back I believe they were 3rd rd picks and 2nd/4th qb taken respectively. BPA picks for me and mostly based on “well, they were the top qb taken by the nfl guys, what do I know” mentality. When I get to te back of te 2nd round and the best qb or te is on the board I start considering them.

I'm thinking Goff is being undervalued this year but it's more a product of the crazy depth at the position this year.   I'm thinking he should take another step forward in his third year, under great coaching, and even better weapons around him. I'm probably gonna be the last person in my 14 team league to draft a QB and if I  miss out on Rivers, I'm aiming for Goff.

It's my fault. I should have started this thread with a whole lot of crazy hype about how Goff was going to be the next Joe Montana, and insulted anyone who suggested otherwise. That's how you get great message board threads like on Winston or Manziel.

Goff is pretty dang good and he really should be going right after Wentz. I mean, Alex Smith, seriously?

He was QB12 in most scoring systems (both overall and points per game). His ADP is QB15. 17th overall in a 1QB redraft is pretty crazy high just because you likely don't have to pay that - even in a 16 team league, he should make it back around.

That being said, I think he's worth reaching a little bit for. I like him better than the guys he's grouped around (ADP in this order: Ryan, Goff, Mahomes, Smith, Mariota, Dak). In dynasty he gets a little more respect, ranking in the 7-10 range, which is still cheap, IMO. There's no way I'd be taking Watson with his 7 game sample and 2nd percentile throw velocity over Goff. People forget Goff is 2 years younger than Wentz, so it won't be until next year that he'll be the same age Wentz was for his 2017 breakout. Personally, I like Goff more than Wentz in dynasty :scared: . At just 23 he had a higher YPA and completion %. I don't really understand the discrepancy in their rankings and valuations. I guess it is solely due to Wentz's unsustainable TD rate.

The scary part for potential Goff owners in redraft is that he won't throw enough passes and for dynasty it's that he's a system QB. The pass attempts do scare me, but I don't buy into the system QB narrative. Anybody who can pick up a new system and deliver those kind of results is ok in my book.

Dude is legit.

Although I'm a huge Rams fan, I still keep looking for faults.  And I'm the first one to not give Goff the benefit of the doubt.  He's a "system QB" after all.  But man he made some great throws today.

One of those amazing throws was an incompletion. That rope he threw to Cooks that the defender made a great play to rip out of Cooks hands at the last second was sick.

He’s next level...Mahomes is everyone’s darling at the moment.  But Goff is in as good a situation and puts up big numbers.  High floor high ceiling QB.

Best thing that can be said about him right now is he’s lived up to the #1 pick status.  Also he’s still only 23.

Will continue to be overlooked. For someone so young it’s baffling for me to say but I think he’s actually a better NFL QB than fantasy QB. Sure he is surrounded by an assload of talent and a great coaching staff but that’s not his fault.
