QB Justin Fields, NYJ (8 Viewers)

If JF doesn't play this week, there is something deeper going on in Chicago.
He broke his thumb. You can probably put away the tinfoil hat.
I think the GM has his thumb on the scale. Its a lose lose for him. JF comes back and plays poorly, he loses all trade value. Comes back and plays decently then he's in the same situation we were in going into the 2023 draft.

Otherwise its a medical staff that isn't great and/or a player and coach who won't go unless they are 100%. Neither of those are great options.
He broke. His thumb.
Best to shut him down for the year.

The Bears are going to do 1 of 2 things next year:
1. Keep Fields
2. Trade Fields

In both of those circumstances, they need to start him the rest of the year to either evaluate/confirm #1, or to build his trade value for #2.

Benching him serves neither of those purposes.

Escalated quickly. Ha ha

This is exactly the issue. What % does JF need to be at for the Bears to start him?

What % does JF need to be at to want to start? He knows this is an evaluation.

The coach is saying he is throwing a really good ball right now. When pressed on why the medical staff hasn't cleared him his first response was "It's really about Justin feeling good about it" Which implies that Justin doesn't want to play yet if we're reading into it.

He was reportedly close to playing last week, and wanted to play. But the short week tanked that.

I’d expect him out there this Sunday.

The easy answer is 100% healthy. He broke his hand. I'd be curious how much time people in here would miss from work from a broken hand. I'd bet 99.9999999% of us aren't pro athletes and would easily miss a month plus.

To be 100% clear, he dislocated his right thumb. He didn't break it.

I worry about who is making this decision for Chicago. That may be just as important as deciding on Fields.

I'd say no starter in the NFL is 100% healthy right now. If JF is a guy who won't play at less than 100%, he isn't a franchise QB.

I'm not trying to be combative on this issue, I'm just fed up with the organization. Something as simple as "can Justin go this week?" Turns into a circus every time and I'm skeptical its the medical staff saying he isn't healthy enough to be cleared for an NFL game.

You sound like you have a lot of internal biases driving your narratives.

Maybe not combative, but certainly projecting some of your own stuff onto the situation.

I don't think he broke his hand. It was a thumb dislocation.

If he’s at risk to fumble every play because of the thumb, he shouldn’t be in there. Eberflus being evasive on this really hurts Fields credibility.

Totally agree on the Flus part. Flus' pressers are so bad it makes me question if they know what they are doing.

Fields has always had a fumbling problem. He has more fumbles than games started in his career.

I’m sure many are in the same boat. Him versus Murray. Really hard to trust Bears offense and him…but the upside is just so huge with this guy if he runs like he did last year.

This is a rough situation to be in. Obviously with him being cleared to play I hope he is as close to 100% as possible. Fumbling and bad grip/passing issues could arise. Maybe he just decides to run it 10 times this game and give us 100 yards and 2 Tds. I'm down with that.

Not a lot of good options to pivot off of Fields with QB injuries and byes.

In 2 SF leagues, I’m starting Fields without hesitation.

If you are a decided underdog, Fields is a swing for the fences start. He can get you 10 and he can get you 30+. I’ll probably use him in a huge DK lineup. He had a monster game vs Detroit last year, and the Bears will be chasing points.

I'm in that boat. I currently plan on going with Murray for this week. Higher floor, and still has plenty of upside in a potential shootout

I’m leaning him. But, Fields vs Detroit should be good garbage time as well. You know Detroit wants to roll up Chicago so they will have foot on the gas while game. Good choices to have.

I think I am going with Murray over Fields this week. Murray looked pretty good and should play as well or better after getting a game under his belt. AZ will be likely be playing from behind for most of the game.

FBG, Yahoo, ESPN, FP, FFBallers, CBS, and Harris all rank Murray ahead of Fields, so we should probably start Fields.

That is true as long as I stay on the Murray side as well. I haven’t made a good decision yet this season and that includes draft day.

Kind of glad he's opening on the road, albeit against the cream of the division. Meathead Bears fans would have laid down a boo bomb after his first incompletion.

It might just be me, but when Fields is on the sidelines it looks like he doesn't like playing football. Like the 10 year old violin prodigy that would rather be at the beach building sandcastles but he's so dang good at the violin he just kinda has to do it. JF's been really good at football for so long has it become just a 'job'? He kind of looks like I do at my job. Antsy, anti-social, glazed over eyes, counting the minutes until he can sit in the lounger and toss back a couple of cold ones. Every single minute Josh Allen is on the sideline is devoted to football. He's looking at the tablet, he's talking with the coaches, he checks in with Diggs.....Fields looks like he's trying to time out his grub hub order so it'll be there when he gets home. When the Bears played Carolina, freaking Bryce Young was attached to Andy Dalton's hip on the sidelines, asking him questions and getting his perspective as often as he could.

Tyson Bagent did a lot of things that Fields should have been taking note of. I hope he did.

I’m not sure they boo him as much as the coaching staff. This franchise has been spinning it’s wheels for some time now.

In his defense, I might suggest that all players handle things differently. Case in point would be one of the greatest WR's of all time (imho). Marvin Harrison. That dude would catch an amazing TD pass, hand the ball to the ref, then go sit by himself on the end of the bench, just chillin'. I saw him do that again and again....jus the way he was wired. In fact, last week NFL network replayed a 2003 matchup between Indy and NE, Tom against Peyton. After being down 31-10 at one point in the second half, Manning came back and took the lead with a beautiful TD pass to Harrison, who proceeded to mosey over to the end of the bench an sat down by himself. I actually paused live TV to take a photo of Marvin chilln'....too classic.

His biggest positive is the lack of sacks. But the offense was just as much if not more anemic and one diminsional with Bagent. I'm not here to defend Fields because he takes far too many sacks. But what are the "lot of things" Fields should be taking note of?

Bagent is the better qb for Getsy’s offense. The problem is getting someone to click with Fields.

I think JF is auditioning for his next team the rest of the year. I'm not sure if the Bears are going to showcase him or not.

I think the Bears are going to run the most basic playback possible and try to get the run game with short passing going.

Bears D has been playing better lately and they've won a couple games playing mistake free football. That seems like the style Flus wants to continue.

Bagent went 2-2. JF was 1-5 as a starter.

Bagent takes the check down more and gets the ball out quicker. I think the offense moved just as well with him under center than with JF.

Not only does JF take sacks, he takes deep sacks which just kills drives.

In the two games Bagent won he didn't turn the ball over. In the only game Fields won he didn't turn the ball over.

For JF's Career... 33 games played 46 turnovers... 115 sacks. 6 wins as a starter. It's not like he's above taking a pointer or two from a kid with a better winning percentage.

That's short sided. Bagent has 4 games with one of those being the woeful Panthers and his other win against the Raiders starting Hoyer.

I would love the Bears to have more short to intermediate routes for Fields. Felt like the Bears constantly ran 4 vertices for Fields.

:shrug:against the packers he only threw it 4 times over 10 yards in 37 attempts. It was a real what are we doing game... but that seems like what Getsy wants to do and Bagent is good at that.

JFs wins aren't great either... these are the QBs he has beaten over the last two seasons...

I have been a harsh critic of Bagent (at times maybe too harsh), but he does things that QBs without great physical tools have to excel at to succeed. He goes through his progressions very well. He makes quick decisions. When he doesn’t like the read, instead of taking a sack he chucks it out of bounds. His “pocket clock awareness” is WAY better than Fields. IMO he sees the field in a holistic way that I’m not sure JF has shown to this point. He doesn’t force things, he lets the game come to him. Things are awesome until the Bears fall behind and need him to shift into second gear. When the game moves to the point where the Bears are down, Bagent doesn’t have the tools to make big plays.

Bagent is a solid backup and a great story. On a great team he might win a playoff game in a pinch. Spoiler alert - Bears aren’t a great team. He’s limited, but he understands his limitations and plays within them.

Back when they let him run Fields gave Detroit fits last year. We always struggle v mobile QBs. Not being used the same way this year (although Campbell said this week that's the guy they're preparing for, they still respect his ability to flip the field with his legs.)
  • 13-147-2 in the 30-31 loss in Chicago
  • 10-132-0 in the 41-10 blowout in Detroit
Detroit's defense was a bit deflated after the Chargers game. Hey, you never apologize for a dub, it's never easy to win a game. In the modern NFL you have to have the ability to win shootout but dang that just wears you down giving up 5 TD drives in succession. Will be interesting to see how they respond this week.

Fields had back-to-back 4 passing TD games v the Broncos and Commanders before he got hurt. His All 22 Film from earlier in the season was exasperating, staring at the primary in a clean pocket and the ball doesn't come out.

I think JF is auditioning for his next team the rest of the year. I'm not sure if the Bears are going to showcase him or not.
Not showcasing him makes zero sense from any perspective.

A. If the Bears are truly undecided on Fields' future, they need to see more of what he can do and get more tape on his strengths and weaknesses to present to the next HC/OC duo.
B. If the Bears have decided to move on, showcasing Fields will pump up his trade value.

I can't imagine a scenario where Flus and Getsy stay...well, I can because this is the Bears and it's like groundhog day over here.

Bears activated QB Justin Fields from injured reserve.

Fields will return from his four-game absence to suit up against the Lions. Through six games this season, Fields has thrown for 1,201 yards, 11 touchdowns, and six interceptions while adding another 47-237-1 on the ground. His return will lift the fantasy stocks of D.J. Moore and Cole Kmet, who will both be on the fantasy radar against a Lions defense that has proven to be susceptible to the pass. Fields can be looked to as a low-end QB1 in his return.

I’m the heavy favorite going into my matchup this weekend so I’ll be rolling with the comfortable floor of Purdy over the high ceiling of Fields. If Fields looks all the way back this week, then he’ll be my set and forget starter ROS.
