I don't think the agent thing is a big deal. There really aren't many substantially negotiable terms in the rookie contract. It's all scripted since the 2011 CBA. TBH, I don't understand what value agents bring to rookies anyway given the compensation is predetermined by draft #.

I don't think the agent thing is a big deal. There really aren't many substantially negotiable terms in the rookie contract. It's all scripted since the 2011 CBA. TBH, I don't understand what value agents bring to rookies anyway given the compensation is predetermined by draft #.

Offset language is a big one. I know that caused Joey Bosa to sit out a bit longer than he should have. The Chargers would not move on anything though and that became a problem.

Payment payout schedule or signing bonus structure or schedule. I forget which one.

Voids are a big one. The actual language of the contract. The actual contract "money" is not one of those but there is still some important stuff agents do for rookie deals.

The comments that kill me the most from the media is when they discuss Fields' next contract. On one hand they speculate he might demand 45-50 mil a year as a reason for the Bears to move on from him, then they proceed to say he's worth a second round pick.

If he's worth that big of a contract, he is worth more than a second round pick. The reality should be slotting him at 30-35mil a year. Does that change their equation in the vote to move on from him? Maybe not, but I wish they would be more realistic discussing his worth.

Again, imagine how good Fields could be with MH2 & a bolstered OL. They’d get a haul of picks from WAS to make improvements on both sides of the ball.

Then they’d know if JF is worth a contract or not.

And if JF sucks and the bears suck, they’re perfectly set up for their next QB.

IMO this is their best path to success. Drafting Williams and hoping he’s Stroud while playing on a team full of holes isn’t exactly a slam dunk way to win.

And honestly Chicago could be solid if they deal the pick & take MH2.

What if Fields and Getsy actually viewed last year as Fields starting to see improvements in his game and their progress just got short circuited and they see a chance to continue it? Probably not, but I considered it.

But if Getsy and Fields are not a match I would be dubious that Robinson and Fields in Atlanta would be as well. Different mentors(Lafluer/McVay) but I think their offensive systems are from the same roots.

Getsy has a LOT to learn before he can become a competent OC. He needs to dial back the nerves during big play calls. He was all over the board last season on big plays. 3rd and longs, 4th down conversions, 4th quarter must-haves. The number of times he said F it and when with a screen pass were insane. Often he'd get too cute on those plays. The one that comes to mind was trying to get a 4th and short in CLE where a backup WR was the lead blocker out of the backfield against Miles Garrett. It was a dumb scheme even with the correct personnel. He also needs to understand that this is not Madden. You just can't run the same play 3x in a row without the veteran defenders figuring it out. His schemes, especially early in the season were just wonk. There were many, many times that the WRs and TEs finished their routes within 5ft of each other. That just can't happen in the NFL as it essentially allows 1 defender to guard all 3 targets. Finally, he needs to learn that all QBs are not Rodgers. He had the luxury of a HoF QB during his time at Green Bay and will not have that luxury pretty much anywhere else. IMO, he was too rigid with his scheme going into the season (note the horrible performances in the first half of 2022 and first 3-4 games of 2023) and tried to mold Fields into something that he was not. Getsy should also get crucified for allowing the OL to perform like a freakin' clown show for 2/3 of the season. Yes there were injuries and moving folks around, but watching the A22 made it clear that the OL wasn't schemed correctly for the plays they needed to make.

In fairness, there was progress made on all of these fronts throughout the 2023 season. He did work out the schemes to open up the field. He also started calling a few more designated runs for Fields (although I still think it wasn't enough). He also added some downfield action. The line performed a bit better, although there were still a good number of WTF moments.

Both Fields, DJ Moore, and Darnell Mooney called out the coaching staff in one way or another during the season. Fields did a good job of biting his tongue when asked point blank if the coaching sucked and often fell on the sword for coaching because it was the right thing to do. It's a shame that Getsy (and often Flus) didn't ever vocalize taking responsibility during press conferences.

The truth is, I think Getsy was ready to get away from Fields and Fields was ready to get away from Getsy. There didn't seem much love lost between the two when they were forced to work together in CHI and I don't see them being a good fit in LVR or anywhere else. We'll see how Gesty does with AOC, a free agent, or a rookie in the offseason.

And the Bears should hope he costs them 40-50 million. I mean they should want that to happen because if it does that means he was successful. He was a very good QB for you.

If they decide to stick with Fields he plays under the rookie deal this year which is just over 6 million and if you pick up his fifth-year option that is another 20-23 million for next year. That is a pretty good deal to find out if he is the guy or not. But the Bears should want to pay him 45- 50 million and let's be honest it will go up in 2 years so these numbers might be lower. It might be more than that once he is a free agent The point is the same if he becomes what you hope he becomes then you want to pay him that money.

If you think CW is going to be better than Fields in the next 2 years or you think he is better than Fields now. You could even think they will be closer in those 2 years talent-wise and number-wise then you trade Fields and draft CW.

I could even make the argument if you think Fields will be that good you extend him now!! You pay him today's prices to avoid the inflated price later. If you believe then you believe.

I will say I kind of like the wait-and-see option better though if I decided to roll with Fields and bypass on CW. Pick up his fifth-year option and kick the can down another year or two.

I think in the end they are going to trade Fields for more than expected and draft CW with the #1 pick. I would love to see Fields stay in Chicago but I just think it is not going to happen.

This is very interesting but it is going to cost the Commanders "A LOT" to move up one slot. The only thing that could hurt the Bears is if CW pulled an Elway or E. Manning and there was no one else wanting to have to deal with a player that says he will only deal with the Commanders. The Bears would be in a rough spot then. Having to decide to take a player #1 overall that says he won't play for you. Then you may lose that pick. I think the player could sit out the season and be included in next year's draft. I'm not sure about that but I believe that is correct. I would have to "google that". I think that is the case. The league needs to change the rules on something like this and maybe make players sit out 2 years. I don't know something to prevent players from avoiding the draft process for how it was intended. Otherwise, the Commanders are going to pay way over the chart price to move up one spot.

However most GMs are not going to be the one who passed on a highly touted QB only to watch him have an incredible 10-15 year career and then be known as the guy who made the wrong move not drafting him. I would say it is close to a 100% chance the Bears draft CW at one and trade Fields.

That 2022 Bears team was BY FAR the worst defense in the NFL. Both against the run and the pass. I would also say it was the worst receiving group of the last several seasons by any team. None of that is to say Fields played well, though I'd argue he was fine, but it was as bad a situation as I've seen in recent history. Replace Fields with Mahomes and they are still picking in the top-10 that year.

The 2023 Bears were better, but again, Fields wasn't THE problem. The defense started gelling after the Sweat trade (part of why I think it was worth it, despite the high price) and they won 5 of their last 8, with all 3 losses being 1 score losses to playoff teams on the road. Sure, if Mahomes is the QB, maybe they sneak the #7 seed, but again, Fields has been ok.

Is Caleb Williams probably better? Sure. Is Justin Fields a bad QB? No. Is the difference between the two close to 3 1st round picks? Highly unlikely.

I would say the opposite though because the return for trading pick 1.01 should bring quite the hall which can help replenish the team quicker. Plus you know Fields has flashed at the NFL level and even though Williams is highly touted you never know if he will be an NFL caliber QB or not. He should be but there is more risk there.

But I have no problem with putting both on the trade bait and see what offers best suit your needs and take the best bang for the buck.

We both agree. I will say although trading Fields seems to be the logical path, staring down at that possible haul for pick 1 would be enticing.

I have been very vocal about Flus' shortcomings and wanted him gone mid season.....BUT, to be fair he's matured as a head coach this season. Yes, he still gets too conservative with a lead. Yes, his press conferences are often unintelligible. Yes, his in game time management is bad. All that said, he improved on all those items as the season progressed. By all accounts the players really love him. And, rightfully, the front office has spoken at length about continuity within the coaching staff. Resetting the clock does give Flus more time, but he was always gonna get more time with the way Poles stripped the roster and corrected the cap situation in 22. And the 23 team was markedly better than the 22 team. There's something to be said about learning on the job I suppose and Flus has been doing just that.

Patriots WR group was a lot better than the 2022 Bears. Patriots don't have a #1, but Douglas, Bourne, and Parker are all decent (or better in Douglas case) players, Bears had nothing, especially after Mooney went down.

I think the Buffalo WR group Josh Allen's rookie year (where it was 2nd year Zay Jones and a bunch of guys not long for the NFL) was worse than the 2022 Bears, but that's about it.
