QB Justin Fields, NYJ (3 Viewers)

Q: is there an emergency WW option for week 5 if Fields flames out?
Jacoby Brisett & Drake Maye
Now being reported that Love will miss about 3 weeks.

I’d grab Fields if he’s still available. Ceiling play.
Yup. Picked him up this AM. Would love to see him seize the starting job but I doubt it will happen.
I don't know why not. Calf injuries tend to linger and it has been reported Russ was very limited on Friday. I suspect he will sit next week as well. Plus he's as mobile as a rock. One tackle and he will likely reaggravate the injury he has.
Also, he’s not very good even without the calf injury.
Wilson is smart with the ball and that means a lot.
So smart he was booted out of Denver? Come on really? Wilson injured his calf earlier in the year now it's flared up again? And like I said eariler this is an injury that lingers.

Ask CMC who injured his calf in week 17 months ago, had the entire off season to recover and he reaggravted it AGAIN.

Being smart doen't apply here when your body is breaking down and is now out of the equation.

Who are we starting Fields over today?

I’ll begin: I’m not starting him over Jayden Daniels.
League 1: TMc
League 2: Higgins, Chase Brown
Funny we have the same decision @Pietaster2
I'm excited about Jayden, but starting Fields this week. Personally trust the veteran QB over the rookie in his first start. Besides, Russ could take over next week. Get to fire up Fields at least one time.

Yes, he's always been smart with the ball. It's an objectively true statement. He has a 1.9 career interception rate. That's excellent.

His body is breaking down, he used to be great sliding around the pocket to find throwing lanes and that ability was clearly diminished in Denver. It was terrible under Nathaniel Hackett but he turned out to be one of the worst head coaches in NFL history. It was better under Payton.

If he can get healthy, which is a question and Fields isn't protecting the ball then Tomlin will absolutely go back to Wilson. Hell, if Fields has a good game today and Wilson is ready to play next week you am bet Tomlin will still turn back to Wilson.

The only way Wilson doesn't get the starting job back is if he is out for 3-4 games and Fields is playing lights out over that span.

Everything you said is true, but Daniels has been getting all of the reps with the first team in the offseason; Fields has not, on his new team. Daniels might have a better affinity for his offense. This was the tie breaker for me.

Fields has received all but a handful of 1st team reps for 4/5 of the preseason due to Russ having the injured calf.

Some people still don't understand the Tomlin philosophy. What you saw today is exactly how he wants his QBs to play.
Perfect system for him. He needs to clean up the bad sacks though.

They had a nice plan for him. But, he’s not going to win consistently kicking 6 field goals.

Looking at some comments above, I think some people expect more out of Fields.

Tomlin will not allow him to lose games like he did in Chicago with his erratic play and bad decision making. He will force him to play like you saw today.

Probably in disbelief. You’d think Russ starts against Denver if at all possible. Revenge game.

Personally, I have Fields on way too many FF teams. Also prefer the young athletic guy to be the Steelers long term answer. Really want to see Fields succeed all the way around

I picked him up everywhere I could.

Top 5 upside every single week he starts. Got him in a few leagues where I have Love, feel like I dodged some bullets.

I think Tomlin will also make sure he is coached up, and put him in a position to succeed with his skill set. He knows Russel Wilson is not the future

Also have Love and also feel very fortunate to acquire him.

It's funny, I've gotten all types of opinions on Fields with about half of them in my estimation being negative. Some have said relying on him is the fastest way to find fantasy football disaster.

Interesting you mentioned Love and a guy above mentions coaching and mentoring. I don't feel the Bears did Fields any favors and PIT will do everything they can to see if Fields can eventually be the guy.

As a Fields and Wilson owner I was hoping Wilson would start and even be somewhat successful which would mean Fields could sit a while. In this day and age coaches don't have the luxury to sit and develop guys, especially early picks. There have been soooo many successful QBs who sat a few years to start their career and ended up quite good playing well into their 30s. Look at Rogers and Cousins - both sat. Even the goat Brady sat to start his career. Why rush these guys?

Tomlin could be that guy who has some luxury to sit Fields and let him develop. I really hope Wilson starts when he is healthy and gives Fields some time learning the system and the NFL.

Guys like Penix and Drake Maye could really benefit long term by sitting and then hopefully go on to long careers.

I think about how many failed first round QBs there have been in the last 3-5 years and wonder if they just would have sat for a year or 2 before being thrown to the wolves.

Snagged him in league I have Love.....just missed out on Baker. I feel pretty good about it. Fields may have a limited ceiling, especially in Pitt. The defense is good. But, he's also been fantasy gold in the past.

Anyone like Baker over Fields?

Yes, for this year, especially for consistency. Fields is still a project. Baker can be like a Goff or maybe a ceiling like Stafford/Cousins the last few years. Solid QB2.

Fields can win you a week but man it's messy right now and PIT seems to want to keep him under wraps a bit, at least for now. Also Wilson could get the starting job back any minute.

Go Baker.

Revenge for whom? Wilson or Payton? Nobody knows Wilson's weaknesses better than Payton.

I think they should just stick with Fields regardless of Wilson's health. Fields played well Sunday. Kept the chains moving, led 6 scoring drives, and most importantly had 0 turnovers. Steelers can win 10 games with that formula.

Agreed. I get why Tomlin would like Russ in principle and I think Russ will get the job back even if the Steelers are 2-0 after this week, depending on how they get there. But there is a window of opportunity for Fields and if he threads the needle with smart football within the scope of the offense he could gain Tomlin's trust. If he does that, I think Tomlin is a smart guy and loves Fields physical tools enough to stick with him.

Fields is the closest the Steelers have come to peak Big Ben since a couple years before he retired.

That last line, I have to ask - how is Fields close to Big Ben? I don't see the similarities or comparison. Very different styles and very different strengths. Ben could sling the ball in his prime, Fields not so much yet.

I am not saying he is similar to Roethlisberger in playing style, just that he is by far the most talented QB they have had on the roster since Ben.

Unlocking that talent is the issue.

Watch Fields blow up this week and next week is full-on PIT QB controversy.
If he blows up there is no controversy.
All depends on how it happens. If he accounts for five TDs and wins the game but takes four sacks, has two turnovers and multiple close calls/questionable decisions. It will be a controversy.

IMO the most important thing for him to do to maintain the job is to play smart and within the confines of the offense. I don't think Hero Ball would be appreciated by Tomlin & Co.

The above is such an unlikely scenario though. The offense is not designed for him to be a gunslinger out there. If he simply shows what he showed last week (i.e. keep drives alive, limit turnovers and let the D do its thing), then I think it’s his job to lose.

I snagged him in a league where rushing TD's are king. A QB who has rushing TD potential is always preferred. I don't have to start him yet, but I'm cautiously optimistic that he will be worth considering in this league, at some point.

I wouldn't consider a bunch of turnovers and questionable decisions to be "blowing up" though.

Guys, I'm now on the Fields train. All aboard - CHOO CHOO. Currently have 2 shares and growing.

I have zero expectations but man this could be a fun (painful) ride. "Let's ride!"

EDIT - FTR these are deeper keeper/dynasty leagues where I don't need him to start right away.

Not seeing how peeps aren't at least rostering him in every league for the upside. Even if you have a stud QB already, others don't (or won't at some point soon), so why not grab and hold for a few weeks over the middling names that nearly everyone has tailing their benches right now?

Arthur Smith said it was his choice to not have Justin Fields throw in middle of field. Didnt want to have Jessie Bates wreck the game. He has a ton of respect for Bates.

"Our Jason Bourne -- TJ Watt -- wrecked the game, theirs didnt"

Always league/bench dependent but this is one rare case where I would roster a 2nd QB. At least to see if there is something there as Fields has top 5 potential. Having said that if I had a top QB and picked up Fields I'd be looking to do a 2 for 1 (QB + something) to upgrade at a position and then pick up another bench spot player.

Always churning. Couple big games from Fields and make I can get someone to bite in a trade.

Hard to imagine Fields blowing up passing-wise this week with Surtain likely shadowing Pickens and no major WR depth behind him
It is true, but that is the case every week with him until he improves. We make bank on his running... that is where he would blow up if he did.

Arthur is a different bird for sure

Would you start him and take a chance having to watch a Lawrence Welk marathon if he scores less than 20 fantasy points?

I'd assume hate it. Look. You may damn well have no intention of successfully attacking the middle of the field. Thats fine. Doesn't mean you don't use the middle of the field at all. Makes u so one dimensional
