QB Justin Fields, NYJ (2 Viewers)

Former Jets visited practice and weren't happy with Fields' bad day.
Taylor got some high fives and Martinez hit a couple nice shots that had them cheering.

Discussion sides were- who cares if they're Glenn's friends and they don't have a say AND they're experienced football minds so if they're unhappy others would be.

I enjoyed it. Fun debate with lots of callers.
Martinez is both "let's start him" and "why are we talking about a guy they're gonna cut"

Fields is gonna Fields. Apparently he is pretty incapable of throwing the ball downfield. I feel like he's lost confidence in himself. He's gonna be running a ton again and the TEs may lead the team in targets/production.

Tyrod has a minor knee issue and Fields thought Glenn should have let him know how much the first string will play in preseason.

NY Press is tough and they frame things AND many former players could have egged him on some so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here but he better not second guess his coach to them again. Oof.

It's probably Martinez and Cook for most of the game

all reports i follow are that fields has been pretty awful in practice. holding the ball, inaccurate. problem here is that the nyj d is not good. so, i am expecting the worst when the season starts. team looks like 5-12 maybe?

I kind of doubt that. Fields has targeted TEs with 19.9% of career pass attempts.

A lot of negative talk today.

Some of the comments...it's pretty rough

Their D should be good this year. Lot of compliments of how Glenn is getting them rolling

i hope you’re right on the d, but the d line was a sieve last year. losing jj early hurt, but the interior was brutal. the LBs are ok, but i’m not tremendously enthused. stephens is a downgrade from reed and gardner kind of plateaued. they never have good safety play. kind of hoping the loss of saleh and ulbricht actually helps the group.

I'm not certain. I'd agree with you on paper.

The other day was pretty cool. Ten or so former Jets giving opinions. They could be shining about their guy but it seemed genuine to me.
Rich Cimini has questioned the quality but he's generally positive and when he talks of the offense he almost always says things like at least they don't have these issues on defense.
WFAN hosts seem positive, Sirius... There's definitely some very respectable minds saying good things so I just believe them.

maybe it’s just the jet fan in me fearing the worst. sherwood was a nice story, but him and quincy are really the only starting caliber LBs rostered. and sherwood is a who knows, 15mm for a maybe. year after year this team has no safety play and doesn’t get takeaways from the DBs. like i said, hoping losing the old staff and having a real scheme instead of a slogan has these guys moving forward. douglas drafted so poorly he left them with so many holes to fill.

Fields looked pretty good and comfortable. I did not expect that -kudos- but it was also quite brief.

I got my share of "ok he's pretty good" type texts tonight about Martinez. All you doubters might want to check it out. The kid can play.

But since Glenn describes prior Jets offenses or QBs (not Aaron) as lacking order and structure and what did he say a clear picture?

Did Martinez do that? Because I think he totally did and maybe to any other franchise it might be different but efficiently moving the ball down the field was a thousand times better than Wilson dating your mom memes between interceptions.

"That is our brand,” Glenn said. “The way we ran the ball. Very efficient in our passing game. Man, we had the ball for over 38 minutes. No turnovers. We had two takeaways for us. I think we had four or five sacks. Everything about what we did was our brand. The only thing that wasn’t our brand was the amount of penalties that we had.”

Glenn was very happy with how Fields responded to his bad days. He said how Fields doesn't seem to care what the press writes and just keeps working every day. Yesterday was good for him. He's in a good place and they love where he's at right now.
Then he spoke of how he's got a ways to go before the regular season.

I took the interview as Fields is trending up.

It's nice to see Jets fans so happy. My Titans went 3-0 last preseason before having the worst record so they're the team fans mention now (as we do) about preseason wins. There's a good sense of it's just preseason but still they're very happy.

IIRC Wilson was lights out his first preseason or in some game. They were fired up then. Just before Rodgers tore his achilles, that was probably the best in decades. Since about Curtis.

It's starting to remind me of Baker and the Browns. Glenn is really energizing that fan base and it's so good to see. They've struggled a lot and should have some good times coming. It's just really nice to see

Haven't watched any of this preseason game, but luv what I'm hearing. I still believe Fields could be a Temu Jaylen Hurts with the right team/system/situation. Hoping he proves me right, even though I'm not all that excited about the Jets being it.

A holy smokes Batman amount of twisting here.
There's videos of them on the sidelines from like a zillion fans. They each spoke at the podium and many, if not all, were on WFAN too.

I had a nice day catching up with old Jet fan friends and at times sharing comments here.

I love Rich but that was one of Fields worst days and then after that he started his uptick he's been on.

Glenn said Tyrod had a procedure on his knee this summer. (When?)
Cook has a twisted ankle that should only keep him out briefly.

Its Martinez and Fields now.

When he was asked if he envisioned they'd sign a QB, he said no and reiterated what he said over the weekend- that the offense played exactly as they wanted in week one.

He sounds confident in a Fields Martinez share in week two.

As of now, Tyrod is just expected to miss preseason

Very interesting practice for #Jets QB Justin Fields. He finished 7 of 12 with a TD.

5 of 5 to start practice. Then 0 for 4. Finished 2 of 3 with the really impressive TD to Jeremy Ruckert in red zone (starter 18 yard line).

The offensive performance was a bit alarming in move-the-ball period of practice. Fields & Co. had three attempts to get down field.

They didn’t gain a first down. Only gained yards twice (two short Breece Hall runs). Three sacks. That needs to be fixed. #Giants defense toyed with NYJ during that period.

Adrian Martinez finds Jamaal Pritchett for a TD in red zone drills.

The very next play Martinez fires one to the back of the end zone to Arian Smith for a TD.

Mason Taylor with a really nice grab down the left sideline on a throw from Adrian Martinez. Stretched out to make a diving grab. #Jets fans with a huge cheer. That high ankle sprain looks fine.

Tough sledding for the Jets starting offense. Not much in the running game and Fields hasn’t been able to connect downfield. #Jets

Second series: Oh, boy. Pass pro breakdowns. Two sacks in three drop backs. McFadden blitz caught them by surprise.

Arian Smith with a real nice jump-ball catch on a downfield pass by Martinez. Smith is having a nice camp. #Jets

Glenn was pleased with how the offense responded after yesterday, save for the two-minute drive at the end. He said he challenged them yesterday in meetings. #Jets

I don't get this other than coach speak.
He said "we did some good things at the end" which is Martinez's offense.

Jets struggling against Giants for two days is big news in NY bragging rights playful banter stuff.

The good drives had sacks and ended in FGs with people talking of Nick Folk's age. Maybe he wanted them to do XYZ and they did against a talented defense so he's taking that as a good sign?

My friends will go to the game but then I won't hear anything after I don't think.
Y'all don't like friend speak so I haven't been really and just citing reporters.

Maybe someone here will go to camp?

Very much seems as I predicted so far- it just runs smoother and orderly with Martinez. I predicated a mid season switch.

If he does well again in week two, maybe this Kurt Warner-ish story can get some legs

Different reporter and again why I'm thinking huh? To Glenn's quote he was pleased with the offense

Jets offense in move the ball — didn’t exactly move the ball:

Justin Fields complete to Tyler Johnson

Penalty on the offense — false start I think.

Brian Burns sack.

Complete to Brandon Smith for a first.

Complete to Jeremy Ruckert for about six yards.

Thrown behind Garrett Wilson, incomplete.

Missed Garrett Wilson near the sideline on third down.

Justin Fields complete to Brandon Smith on a slant — followed up by another possible sack from Kayvon Thibodeaux. If not a sack, Fields threw it over Garrett Wilson’s head.

Then came a penalty (false start I believe) and a Fields keeper for a short gain.

Starting offense not really going anywhere today so far — in the passing game at least. The running game has been good.

Tonight was big!
Definitely in fans minds
Some already calling for Martinez to start over Fields

Waiting to hear Glenn's quotes today and tomorrow.

The Giants have an excellent defense and stars sat but Fields was bad. 1 for 6 or somesuch.
Martinez brought order.
He made a couple dopey throws, one a pick six.
It was ordinary veteran looking most of the time.
He is far faster than you'd think and he bought time nicely (except the one) and ...dude is just under control.

ETA I still don't expect it until/if Fields struggles in the regular season but this was definitely groundwork laid

1 of 5 for 4 yards.

I know it's preseason but... oooooofff

O/U amount of games before Garrett Wilson has a meltdown.
I think he'll be fine. He sure seems frustrated by losing but he got paid, will dominate targets and when he does get frustrated with the Fields I think he'll try and not be so demonstrative about it.

Now, Wilson and Breece Hall fantasy owners might be filling up those player threads with a massive heaping of negativity a week or so out of the gate. The Breece owners with a lot more reasons to be negative then the QB.

Phil Simms said "it's changed. The game changed when he came on. There's no denying that. " Apparently he talked of Tyrod maybe needing to play soon but there's not a believable update on him.

At halftime, Aaron Glenn called the first string offense sloppy and said we have to clean it up.

Zack-
Aaron Glenn said the passing game was not good enough though he declined to specifically evaluate Justin Fields.

Said the passing game has had its ups and downs throughout the summer and that there’s been a lot of “ups” — but not tonight.

Justin Fields said he was thinking on the sideline today about how he hasn’t thrown it down the field much. Said a lot of it has been the defense taking it away and he doesn’t want to force it.

Justin Fields on the first two drives said “it has to be better. It wasn’t up to our standard.”

Rich Cimini wonders if Fields plays next week.
Starters don't often play week three.
Zero completions to college teammate Garret Wilson this preseason is probably not what they wanted.

That sound you hear is has a sad Garrett Wilson fire alarms and extinguishers. Nobody panic. Stay calm and slowly exit the back if someone is willing to provide it without stealing your wallet; or even better, maybe don't enter if you aren't already in.

Zero pity for newly minted Fields owners. If you jumped on this ship this summer, you did so knowing it was rickity and you bought a (hopefully) heavily discounted ticket. You don't deserve loss. But you went in eyes wide and with pennies.

Cimini's writeup is that the Jets can't go into the season one dimensional and expect to be successful.
He's not even going to the backup QBs, just leaps to handing it off offen

Makes sense considering their dual threat qb may be best suited for RPO- his 93 rating wasn’t too bad last year but it would be interesting to see if he can hover at 80-90 rating while moving the chains with his legs. The team has many RBs that can keep each other fresh and the defense rested

As a new GW shareholder I’m still not panicking. Garbage time passes count all the same for FF.

It’s still preseason.

Yep - Allen in on every 3rd down of the preseason should effectively crater Hall’s 2025 value.
No
Glenn has been very positive about all the backs.
Weeks ago, he said he would like to use Hall on most third downs and all Hall owners panicked about first and second.
There was doubt about Allen on third down and I believe this has been a test.
Hall was consistently mentioned picking up blitzing defenders during intrasquad and he got a few dump off passes.
It reads to me like he wants them all capable.

He plans to go with the hothand and claims they did that in Detroit.

I go into every draft not wanting part of a three way share but I usually take one late.

ETA I remember a Lamont Jordan Curtis Martin discussion on the radio recently
