QB Justin Fields, NYJ (1 Viewer)

Paul Andrew Esden Jr.
#Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer believes they have a secret weapon to combat #Jets QB Justin Fields:

‘The good news for us is no one knows him around the league better than Matt [Eberflus] being with him for two years. It’ll be a fun chess match him vs Justin.’

Eberflus was with Fields in Chicago w/ the #Bears in 2022-23.

Yeah eberflus is pretty expert at shutting down fields
Eberflus doesn’t just shut down Fields he had the whole Bears franchise in airplane mode. Eberflus was coaching like he was trying to win a draft pick for someone else.

Why do I continue to fall for this
I said it in the game thread, but I'll say it here too: Can we end the Justin Fields experiment now? He's not a starter and no matter how much NFL teams try to force the issue it's never going to happen. He's just not that good.

The curse of the running QB has spoken.

Got some Blake Bortles level of garbage time goin tho LFG!
Super apt comparison. Fields and the Jets are so bad that you can count on garbage time salvaging the day for fantasy owners. As someone who owns Wilson, it’s great. But, Jets fans have to be super depressed. They need a legit coaching staff and QB, things that have been quite elusive for them.

This is wild for me to say.
The Jets, as terrible as they are, is a much friendlier fantasy football team than the Eagles.
Let's unpack that.
With the Jets we know who the ball is going to and what the players are going to do. They will be in weekly negative game scripts.
Fields will give you garbage time points + rushing.
Breece is the only run game in town.
Wilson gets funneled by Fields (cause that's what he does). Taylor now in the mix.

With the Eagles, no idea what will happen there weekly and who gets the ball other than Hurts + Barkley.

The friendlier fantasy football team is 0-5.
Thousands of people who play DFS are making a ton of $$$ off the Jets.

Love having Fields in multiple leagues but his floor is just so low it’s hard to have confidence starting him. Literally wondering if he’s going to avoid being benched every week is hard to stomach.

Here’s hoping he heats up and has a monster 2nd half.

8 completions and 38 passing yards with 2 minutes left to go in the 4th? His rushing yards have probably been more than negated by the losses his sacks have resulted in. I know the Broncos have a good defense, but he was basically doing a similar type of thing last week until the opposing teams defense softened up in the second half and he was able to put up some fairly garbage stats. Are we thinking his job is secure? Tyrod is far from elite, but Fields has been absolutely inept for 6 of the last 8 quarters.

Edit—game is now over. The team netted 82 total yards if you factor in the sack yards with Fields at the helm today. Their defense holds the Broncos to 13 points and they still lose. I think the Jets have to be wondering if they should consider Tyrod.

While he was under massive pressure all day, he was also just flat bad. What throws he did get off were often late or off target. Play calling is killing them (the only real drive they had had some designated runs for him that worked but they never went back to it) but his late throws cost them the game today.

The OL wasn't great and the Broncos have a good pass rush, but he held the ball for an eternity every time he dropped back. The Jets are known for their terrible QB play, it's kind of their thing, but that was the worst performance by a QB that didn't turn the ball over that I have ever seen. He essentially sacked himself about 5 times.

Not this week.

On that last throw to Wilson when he broke out into the flat, I must’ve screamed throw it to Wilson eight times before he finally threw it. Craziest part is he was staring him down the whole time too. Cannot for the life of me figure out why he didn’t throw it earlier as he was wide open the whole time. He completes that one pass and they likely win the game.

Justin Fields completed 9-of-17 passes for 45 yards :x in the Jets’ 13-11, Week 6 loss to the Broncos.

Per usual, the NFL sent a subpar product across the pond, this time with a nine-sack showing from Fields. He lost more sack yardage (55) than he gained via his nine completions. This was just the third time since 2000 a quarterback has accomplished that feat while attempting more than 15 passes. Fields was routinely late to throws, resulting in multiple missed connections with Garrett Wilson, who was visibly frustrated throughout the contest. The day was summed up well by New York’s final drive of the first half. Just as they seemed to gain some momentum on offense via a fourth-down conversion, Fields hurried to the line with the clock running, only to watch more than 20 seconds tick away and the half come to an end. Between the clueless coaching, a lack of pass-catching talent, and Fields’ own shortcomings, nothing is clicking for the Jets. It wouldn’t be surprising for them to turn to Tyrod Taylor ahead of their Week 7 game against the Panthers.

fields refuses to release the ball. simple. i just hope it’s an out from his contract after this year.

I think we’re again at the point where we have to seriously wonder about his fantasy viability because of a looming benching. Fantasy players are very happy that his backup is Tyrod and that the Jets don’t want to get a look at somebody else.

I mean benching him means they might win a game and blow getting the #1 overall. I think the only logical explanation has to be the subtle tanking :hophead:

It’s the kind you ask the HC of a 0-6 team with a QB that just threw for 45 total yards.

I feel like I’m constantly yelling into this void. It’s funny sometimes. I’ve been saying this since beginning or mid-August. This is Sept. 3rd. Had we even had opening night?

"I hate to break it to you but they're in the running for the first pick in the draft. It's only that nobody realizes it yet.

They suck. There aren't going to be too many wins and you're going to have to abide this clown crap for a few years. It'll get old really quickly.” - Sept. 3rd, me

They were at 5.5 win projection at beginning of season (along with Clev and NYG), only team worse was NO at 5 so that predection wasn't exaxtly going out on a limb.

I don’t think that Fields fantasy owners are happy that Tyrod might not be a top tier backup. Even if Fields doesn’t get benched at all this season—his floor potentially being below zero is not going to make anybody comfortable to start him. Now that it sounds like Garrett Wilson might be hurt on top of that—I think Fields owners are going to hold their breath even more before starting him. In regards to redraft leagues (that are not 2 qb, that are not superflex, or that are 12 teams or below)—-I wouldn’t blame Fields owners if they benched him for qb’s that might be on their Waivers wires

Can’t argue with this one bit. I’m also aware of that, but was simply going with the biggest of issues (say you held Fields and little else). Actually, your point was the one I made in here after the Buffalo game. I just backed off it because, in general, player threads get testy because the player is somebody’s guy.

I was talking about Glenn and the media. I had already had it with the act by August. Actually, *almost every problem they have had I’ve written about at length and on this board months ago. I'm not quoting myself because i’m arrogant. I’m doing it because I don’t think there’s an issue I didn’t cover fairly thoroughly and it saves me time to quote it.

1) I'm not a real fan of coaches that play hard-*** either through the media to their players or try and play hard-*** against the beats and media covering the team. Glenn seems to do both.

2) The Jets needed a quarterback to reset them. They signed my least favorite in the NFL and didn't draft anybody to even attempt to develop one. Before someone chimes in with, "they couldn't waste picks and had to use them judiciously," I'll rejoin that they took a guy nearly one hundred places above consensus in the fourth round, which leads to subsection a)

a) usually when a GM reaches like that there's a real reason or some inside dope. I haven't been assuaged that there's been either of those things, nor has a really good reason been given why waiting until the sixth for Arian Smith was not the best move. Nobody was taking this guy in the fourth of fifth,

3) The Jets hired another defensive coach. I'll admit I was happy that we'd gone to Detroit and gotten a Jet alumnus who by all accounts works his butt off. But here's the thing. We haven't had competent offensive football played since about 2003. It's been two decades at least. And watching a team that has trouble throwing the football more than fifteen yards has gotten so old you wouldn't believe. As a fan who is spending a ton of time (and some money) to watch these guys, I want a return. I want exciting and competent football on both sides of the ball. If Justin Fields and taking your most dynamic back out of the game sounds like offensive competence, you have about a minute before I cut you off because this is the same story for nearly twenty-five years and Testaverde and Pennington as your apex is like dating a cute girl in high school and realizing at seventy that she was the best you ever did. It's almost crushing.

4) The ownership is such a mess that it affects everything as a fan and neither the people with the most access to information nor the fan has any way to hold anybody accountable. The owner's sixteen or seventeen year-old kid was telling their owner father to refuse trades the GM had in the works because the guy the Jets would get had ****ty Madden ratings. I mean, where do you go after that? In my opinion, anybody who thinks that the Jets can function and that football people can do their jobs with that sort of internal control is deluding themselves. I refuse to delude myself. And it branches out everywhere. Every time the previous GM Joe Douglas made a move that sounded off (and he built an okay team) I would immediately try to figure out how far it was off and whether Woody (the owner) or his kid Brick (that's what they call him for real) had anything to do with it. The teenagers he had were giving out locker room game balls to guys after wins. I mean, if you've six Lombardis in the building then maybe you can laugh that off. But Woody (and possibly Brick) are the reason we had coaches like Adam Gase and GMs like Mike Maccagnan.

I guess I could type forever so I'll stop. But do I sound like I think this is going to end differently in any way? I just don't. I really hope I'm wrong. And one last thing: I am not a masochist nor do I like being this bad. I hated it as a Red Sox fan, and probably the greatest sports memories I have are of 2004, 2007, and 2013. Pure elation and joy. I just . . . you can't beat it. But you know what that took? A brand spanking new ownership team that completely cleaned house, changed philosophies, hired great talent, spent the money wisely, and kept control of the internal affairs really well. Did I always agree with them? No, in fact I have big quibbles with the remaining guy now, but those titles were a result of competence and effectiveness coming from the top. We have none of that for the Jets and I'm actually afraid for my good friends in the Jets thread that all their passion is just stepped on and abused by cynical operators. I hate it. I might very well hate the Jets.

“Weeb Eubank was a defensive coach and that worked out didn’t it, ok?!?” - NYJ Owner.

Dude. When I did with Saleh Jets thread complained that was too narrow. I was happy to have Glenn at first because ulike so many others he was as former Jet and wanted to be here. Honestly, his willingness is the only reason I’m not shouting “FIRE AARON GLENN” from everywhere including the sun.
